The Brownian separable permuton is a random probability measure on the unit square, which was introduced by Bassino, Bouvel, Féray, Gerin, Pierrot (2016) as the scaling limit of the diagram of the uniform separable permutation as size grows to infinity. We show that, almost surely, the permuton is the pushforward of the Lebesgue measure on the graph of a random measure-preserving function associated to a Brownian excursion whose strict local minima are decorated with i.i.d. signs. As a consequence, its support is almost surely totally disconnected, has Hausdorff dimension one, and enjoys self-similarity properties inherited from those of the Brownian excursion. The density function of the averaged permuton is computed and a connection with the shuffling of the Brownian continuum random tree is explored.
Universal limits of substitution-closed permutation classes

We consider uniform random permutations in proper substitution-closed classes and study their limiting behavior in the sense of permutons.
The limit depends on the generating series of the simple permutations in the class. Under a mild sufficient condition, the limit is an elementary one-parameter deformation of the limit of uniform separable permutations, previously identified as the Brownian separable permuton. This limiting object is therefore in some sense universal. We identify two other regimes with different limiting objects. The first one is degenerate; the second one is nontrivial and related to stable trees.
These results are obtained thanks to a characterization of the convergence of random permutons through the convergence of their expected pattern densities. The limit of expected pattern densities is then computed by using the substitution tree encoding of permutations and performing singularity analysis on the tree series.

This paper initiates a limit theory of permutation valued processes, building on the recent theory of permutons. We apply this to study the asymptotic behaviour of random sorting networks. We prove that the Archimedean path, the conjectured limit of random sorting networks, is the unique path from the identity to the reverse permuton having minimal energy in an appropriate metric. Together with a recent large deviations result (Kotowski, 2016), it implies the Archimedean limit for the model of relaxed random sorting networks.

We study random uniform permutations in an important class of pattern-avoiding permutations: the separable permutations. We describe the asymptotics of the number of occurrences of any fixed given pattern in such a random permutation in terms of the Brownian excursion. In the recent terminology of permutons, our work can be interpreted as the convergence of uniform random separable permutations towards a "Brownian separable permuton".
Phases in Large Combinatorial Systems

This is a status report on a companion subject to extremal combinatorics, obtained by replacing extremality properties with emergent structure, `phases'. We discuss phases, and phase transitions, in large graphs and large permutations, motivating and using the asymptotic formalisms of graphons for graphs and permutons for permutations. Phase structure is shown to emerge using entropy and large deviation techniques.
Permutations with fixed pattern densities

We study scaling limits of random permutations ("permutons") constrained by having fixed densities of a finite number of patterns. We show that the limit shapes are determined by maximizing entropy over permutons with those constraints. In particular, we compute (exactly or numerically) the limit shapes with fixed \hbox{12} density, with fixed \hbox{12} and \hbox{123} densities, with fixed \hbox{12} density and the sum of \hbox{123} and \hbox{213} densities, and with fixed \hbox{123} and \hbox{321} densities. In the last case we explore a particular phase transition. To obtain our results, we also provide a description of permutons using a dynamic construction.
Finitely forcible graphons and permutons

We investigate when limits of graphs (graphons) and permutations (permutons) are uniquely determined by finitely many densities of their substructures, i.e., when they are finitely forcible. Every permuton can be associated with a graphon through the notion of permutation graphs. We find permutons that are finitely forcible but the associated graphons are not. We also show that all permutons that can be expressed as a finite combination of monotone permutons and quasirandom permutons are finitely forcible, which is the permuton counterpart of the result of Lovasz and Sos for graphons.
