Intersecting families of sets and permutations: a survey
A family $\mathcal{A}$ of sets is said to be \emph{$t$-intersecting} if any two sets in $\mathcal{A}$ have at least $t$ common elements. A central problem in extremal set theory is to determine the size or structure of a largest $t$-intersecting sub-family of a given family $\mathcal{F}$. We give a survey of known results, conjectures and open problems for various important families $\mathcal{F}$, namely, power sets, levels of power sets, hereditary families, families of signed sets, families of labeled sets, and families of permutations. We also provide some extensions and consequences of known results.

Symmetric Distribution of Crossings and Nestings in Permutations of Type B
Published • View Publication • BIB
This note contains two results on the distribution of crossing numbers and nesting numbers in permutations of type B. More precisely, we prove a Bn- analogue of the symmetric distribution of crossings and nestings of permutations due to Corteel (Adv. in Appl. Math., 38(2)(2007), 149-163) as well as the sym- metric distribution of k-crossings and k-nestings of permutations due to Burrill et al. (DMTCS proc. AN, (2010), 461-468).

Properties of Generalized Derangement Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A permutation sigma in Sn is a k-derangement if for any subset X = {a1, . . ., ak} \subseteq [n], {sigma(a1), . . ., sigma(ak)} is not equal to X. One can form the k-derangement graph on the set of permutations of Sn by connecting two permutations sigma and tau if sigma(tau)^-1 is a k-derangement. We characterize when such a graph is connected or Eulerian. For n an odd prime power, we determine the independence, clique and chromatic number of the 2-derangement graph.

Derivative polynomials and permutations by numbers of interior peaks and left peaks
Published • View Publication • BIB
Derivative polynomials in two variables are defined by repeated differentiation of the tangent and secant functions. We establish the connections between the coefficients of these derivative polynomials and the numbers of interior and left peaks over the symmetric group. Properties of the generating functions for the numbers of interior and left peaks over the symmetric group, including recurrence relations, generating functions and real-rootedness, are studied.

Families of graph-different Hamilton paths
Let D be an arbitrary subset of the natural numbers. For every n, let M(n;D) be the maximum of the cardinality of a set of Hamiltonian paths in the complete graph K_n such that the union of any two paths from the family contains a not necessarily induced cycle of some length from D. We determine or bound the asymptotics of M(n;D) in various special cases. This problem is closely related to that of the permutation capacity of graphs and constitutes a further extension of the problem area around Shannon capacity. We also discuss how to generalize our cycle-difference problems and present an example where cycles are replaced by 4-cliques. These problems are in a natural duality to those of graph intersection, initiated by Erdös, Simonovits and Sós. The lack of kernel structure as a natural candidate for optimum makes our problems quite challenging.

Pattern avoidance by even permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study questions of even-Wilf-equivalence, the analogue of Wilf-equivalence when attention is restricted to pattern avoidance by permutations in the alternating group. Although some Wilf-equivalence results break when considering even-Wilf-equivalence analogues, we prove that other Wilf-equivalence results continue to hold in the even-Wilf-equivalence setting. In particular, we prove that t(t-1)...321 and (t-1)(t-2)...21t are even-shape-Wilf-equivalent for odd t, paralleling a result (which held for all t) of Backelin, West, and Xin for shape-Wilf-equivalence. This allows us to classify the patterns of length 4, and to partially classify patterns of length 5 and 6. As with transition to involution-Wilf-equivalence, some (but not all) of the classical Wilf-equivalence results are preserved when we make the transition to even-Wilf-equivalence.

Repetition in reduced decompositions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a permutation w, we show that the number of repeated letters in a reduced decomposition of w is always less than or equal to the number of 321- and 3412-patterns appearing in w. Moreover, we prove bijectively that the two quantities are equal if and only if w avoids the ten patterns 4321, 34512, 45123, 35412, 43512, 45132, 45213, 53412, 45312, and 45231.

Refined inversion statistics on permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study new refinements of inversion statistics for permutations, such as k-step inversions, (the number of inversions with fixed position differences) and non-inversion sums (the sum of the differences of positions of the non-inversions of a permutation). We also provide a distribution function for non-inversion sums, a distribution function for k-step inversions that relates to the Eulerian polynomials, and special cases of distribution functions for other statistics we introduce, such as (\leqk)-step inversions and (k1,k2)-step inversions (that fix the value separation as well as the position). We connect our refinements to other work, such as inversion tops that are 0 modulo a fixed integer d, left boundary sums of paths, and marked meshed patterns. Finally, we use non-inversion sums to show that for every number n > 34, there is a permutation such that the dot product of that permutation and the identity permutation (of the same length) is n.
Limits of permutation sequences through permutation regularity
A permutation sequence $(σ_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ is said to be convergent if, for every fixed permutation $τ$, the density of occurrences of $τ$ in the elements of the sequence converges. We prove that such a convergent sequence has a natural limit object, namely a Lebesgue measurable function $Z:[0,1]^2 \to [0,1]$ with the additional properties that, for every fixed $x \in [0,1]$, the restriction $Z(x,\cdot)$ is a cumulative distribution function and, for every $y \in [0,1]$, the restriction $Z(\cdot,y)$ satisfies a "mass" condition. This limit process is well-behaved: every function in the class of limit objects is a limit of some permutation sequence, and two of these functions are limits of the same sequence if and only if they are equal almost everywhere. An important ingredient in the proofs is a new model of random permutations, which generalizes previous models and is interesting for its own sake.

Determinants and Perfect Matchings
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory A 120 (2013) 304-314 • View Publication • BIB
We give a combinatorial interpretation of the determinant of a matrix as a generating function over Brauer diagrams in two different but related ways. The sign of a permutation associated to its number of inversions in the Leibniz formula for the determinant is replaced by the number of crossings in the Brauer diagram. This interpretation naturally explains why the determinant of an even antisymmetric matrix is the square of a Pfaffian.

Cardinality of Rauzy classes
Published in Ann. Inst. Fourier 63 , n° 5 (2013) p. 1651-1715 • View Publication • BIB
Rauzy classes define a partition of the set of irreducible (or indecomposable) permutations. They were defined by G. Rauzy as part of an induction algorithm for interval exchange transformations. In this article we prove an explicit formula for the cardinality of all Rauzy classes.

An upper bound on the number of high-dimensional permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
What is the higher-dimensional analog of a permutation? If we think of a permutation as given by a permutation matrix, then the following definition suggests itself: A d-dimensional permutation of order n is an [n]^(d+1) array of zeros and ones in which every "line" contains a unique 1 entry. A line here is a set of entries of the form {(x_1,...,x_{i-1},y,x_{i+1},...,x_{d+1})}, for y between 1 and n, some index i between 1 and d+1 and some choice of x_j in [n] for all j except i. It is easy to observe that a one-dimensional permutation is simply a permutation matrix and that a two-dimensional permutation is synonymous with an order-n Latin square. We seek an estimate for the number of d-dimensional permutations. Our main result is the following upper bound on their number: ((1+o(1))(n/e^d))^(n^d). We tend to believe that this is actually the correct number, but the problem of proving the complementary lower bound remains open. Our main tool is an adaptation of Bregman's proof of the Minc conjecture on permanents. More concretely, our approach is very close in spirit to Radhakrishnan's proof of Bregman's theorem.

Setwise intersecting families of permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A family of permutations $A \subset S_n$ is said to be \emph{$t$-set-intersecting} if for any two permutations $σ, π\in A$, there exists a $t$-set $x$ whose image is the same under both permutations, i.e. $σ(x)=π(x)$. We prove that if $n$ is sufficiently large depending on $t$, the largest $t$-set-intersecting families of permutations in $S_n$ are cosets of stabilizers of $t$-sets. The $t=2$ case of this was conjectured by János Körner. It can be seen as a variant of the Deza-Frankl conjecture, proved in [4]. Our proof uses similar techniques to those of [4], namely, eigenvalue methods, together with the representation theory of the symmetric group, but the combinatorial part of the proof is harder.

Double Catalan monoids
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 36 (2012), no. 3, 333-354 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we define and study what we call the double Catalan monoid. This monoid is the image of a natural map from the 0-Hecke monoid to the monoid of binary relations. We show that the double Catalan monoid provides an algebraization of the (combinatorial) set of 4321-avoiding permutations and relate its combinatorics to various off-shoots of both the combinatorics of Catalan numbers and the combinatorics of permutations. In particular, we give an algebraic interpretation of the first derivative of the Kreweras involution on Dyck paths, of 4321-avoiding involutions and of recent results of Barnabei {\em et al.} on admissible pairs of Dyck paths. We compute a presentation and determine the minimal dimension of an effective representation for the double Catalan monoid. We also determine the minimal dimension of an effective representation for the 0-Hecke monoid.

Probabilistic and Combinatorial Aspects of the Card-Cyclic to Random Insertion Shuffle
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider a permutation $σ\in S_n$ as a deck of cards numbered from 1 to $n$ and laid out in a row, where $σ_j$ denotes the number of the card that is in the $j$-th position from the left.\rm\ We study some probabilistic and combinatorial aspects of the shuffle on $S_n$ defined by removing and then randomly reinserting each of the $n$ cards once, with the removal and reinsertion being performed according to the original left to right order of the cards. The novelty here in this nonstandard shuffle is that every card is removed and reinserted exactly once. The bias that remains turns out to be quite strong and possesses some surprising features.

Generic rectangulations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A rectangulation is a tiling of a rectangle by a finite number of rectangles. The rectangulation is called generic if no four of its rectangles share a single corner. We initiate the enumeration of generic rectangulations up to combinatorial equivalence by establishing an explicit bijection between generic rectangulations and a set of permutations defined by a pattern-avoidance condition analogous to the definition of the twisted Baxter permutations.

Combinatorial minors for matrix functions and their applications
As well known, permanent of a square (0,1)-matrix $A$ of order $n$ enumerates the permutations $β$ of $1,2,...,n$ with the incidence matrices $B\leq A.$ To obtain enumerative information on even and odd permutations with condition $B\leq A,$ we should calculate two-fold vector $(a_1,a_2)$ with $a_1+a_2 =per A.$ More general, the introduced $ω$-permanent, where $ω=e^{2πi/m},$ we calculate as $m$-fold vector. For these and other matrix functions we generalize the Laplace theorem of their expansion over elements of the first row, using the defined so-called "combinatorial minors". In particular, in this way, we calculate the cycle index of permutations with condition $B\leq A.$
Characters of symmetric groups in terms of free cumulants and Frobenius coordinates
Published in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science Proc. AK, 2009, 337-348 • View Publication • BIB
Free cumulants are nice and useful functionals of the shape of a Young diagram, in particular they give the asymptotics of normalized characters of symmetric groups S(n) in the limit n\to\infty. We give an explicit combinatorial formula for normalized characters of the symmetric groups in terms of free cumulants. We also express characters in terms of Frobenius coordinates. Our formulas involve counting certain factorizations of a given permutation. The main tool are Stanley polynomials which give values of characters on multirectangular Young diagrams.

The generalized weighted probability measure on the symmetric group and the asymptotic behavior of the cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
The goal of this paper is to analyse the asymptotic behavior of the cycle process and the total number of cycles of weighted and generalized weighted random permutations which are relevant models in physics and which extend the Ewens measure. We combine tools from combinatorics and complex analysis (e.g. singularity analysis of generating functions) to prove that under some analytic conditions (on relevant generating functions) the cycle process converges to a vector of independent Poisson variables and to establish a central limit theorem for the total number of cycles. Our methods allow us to obtain an asymptotic estimate of the characteristic functions of the different random vectors of interest together with an error estimate, thus having a control on the speed of convergence. In fact we are able to prove a finer convergence for the total number of cycles, namely \textit{mod-Poisson convergence}. From there we apply previous results on mod-Poisson convergence to obtain Poisson approximation for the total number of cycles as well as large deviations estimates.
A generalization of the Erdős-Turán law for the order of random permutation
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider random permutations derived by sampling from stick-breaking partitions of the unit interval. The cycle structure of such a permutation can be associated with the path of a decreasing Markov chain on $n$ integers. Under certain assumptions on the stick-breaking factor we prove a central limit theorem for the logarithm of the order of the permutation, thus extending the classical Erdős-Turán law for the uniform permutations and its generalization for Ewens' permutations associated with sampling from the PD/GEM$(θ)$ distribution. Our approach is based on using perturbed random walks to obtain the limit laws for the sum of logarithms of the cycle lengths.
