Combinatorial Statistics on Pattern-avoiding Permutations
The study of Mahonian statistics dated back to 1915 when MacMahon showed that the major index and the inverse number have the same distribution on a set of permutations with length n. Since then, many Mahonian statistics have been discovered and much effort have been done to find the equidistribution between two Mahonian statistics on permutations avoiding length-3 classical patterns. In recent years, Amini and Do et al. have done extensive research with various methods to prove the equidistributions, ranging from using generating functions, Dyck paths, block decompositions, to bijections. In this thesis, we will solve the conjectured equidistribution between bast and foze on Av(312) using the bijection method, as well as refine two established results by Do et al. with a combinatorial approach.

Large deviation principle for random permutations
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, 2024(3), 2138-2191 • View Publication • BIB
We derive a large deviation principle for random permutations induced by probability measures of the unit square, called permutons. These permutations are called $μ$-random permutations. We also introduce and study a new general class of models of random permutations, called Gibbs permutation models, which combines and generalizes $μ$-random permutations and the celebrated Mallows model for permutations. Most of our results hold in the general setting of Gibbs permutation models. We apply the tools that we develop to the case of $μ$-random permutations conditioned to have an atypical proportion of patterns. Several results are made more concrete in the specific case of inversions. For instance, we prove the existence of at least one phase transition for a generalized version of the Mallows model where the base measure is non-uniform. This is in contrast with the results of Starr (2009, 2018) on the (standard) Mallows model, where the absence of phase transition, i.e., phase uniqueness, was proven. Our results naturally lead us to investigate a new notion of permutons, called conditionally constant permutons, which generalizes both pattern-avoiding and pattern-packing permutons. We describe some properties of conditionally constant permutons with respect to inversions. The study of conditionally constant permutons for general patterns seems to be a challenging problem.

Enumerations of some pattern-avoiding Fishburn permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove two conjectures of Egge on the enumeration of several classes of pattern-avoiding Fishburn permutations. Our results include enumerating Fishburn permutations avoiding pattern 321 and one of the following three types of classical patterns: a pattern of size 4, two patterns of size 4, or a pattern of size 5.

Baxter permuton and Liouville quantum gravity
Published in Probability Theory and Related Fields, vol. 187, no. 3-4, 2023, pp. 869-941 • View Publication • BIB
The Baxter permuton is a random probability measure on the unit square which describes the scaling limit of uniform Baxter permutations. We find an explict formula for the expectation of the Baxter permuton, i.e.\ the density of its intensity measure. This answers a question of Dokos and Pak (2014). We also prove that all pattern densities of the Baxter permuton are strictly positive, distinguishing it from other permutons arising as scaling limits of pattern-avoiding permutations. Our proofs rely on a recent connection between the Baxter permuton and Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) coupled with the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE). The method works equally well for a two-parameter generalization of the Baxter permuton recently introduced by the first author, except that the density is not as explicit. This new family of permutons, called \emph{skew Brownian permuton}, describes the scaling limit of a number of random constrained permutations. We finally observe that in the LQG/SLE framework, the expected proportion of inversions in a skew Brownian permuton equals $\frac{π-2θ}{2π}$ where $θ$ is the so-called imaginary geometry angle between a certain pair of SLE curves.

Inversion sequences avoiding the pattern 010
Inversion sequences are integer sequences $(σ_1, \dots, σ_n)$ such that $0 \leqslant σ_i < i$ for all $1 \leqslant i \leqslant n$. The study of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences began in two independent articles by Mansour-Shattuck and Corteel-Martinez-Savage-Weselcouch in 2015 and 2016. These two initial articles solved the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding a single pattern for every pattern of length 3 except the patterns 010 and 100. The case 100 was recently solved by Mansour and Yildirim. We solve the final case by making use of a decomposition of inversion sequences avoiding the pattern 010. Our decomposition needs to take into account the maximal value, and the number of distinct values occurring in the inversion sequence. We then expand our method to solve the enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding the pairs of patterns $\{010, 000\}, \{010, 110\}, \{010, 120\}$, and the Wilf-equivalent pairs $\{010, 201\} \sim \{010, 210\}$. For each family of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences considered, its enumeration requires the enumeration of some family of constrained words avoiding the same patterns, a question which we also solve.

An algorithmic approach based on generating trees for enumerating pattern-avoiding inversion sequences
Published in J. Symbolic Comput. 120 (2024), Paper No. 102231, 18 pp • View Publication • BIB
We introduce an algorithmic approach based on generating tree method for enumerating the inversion sequences with various pattern-avoidance restrictions. For a given set of patterns, we propose an algorithm that outputs either an accurate description of the succession rules of the corresponding generating tree or an ansatz. By using this approach, we determine the generating trees for the pattern-classes $I_n(000, 021), I_n(100, 021)$, $I_n(110, 021), I_n(102, 021)$, $I_n(100,012)$, $I_n(011,201)$, $I_n(011,210)$ and $I_n(120,210)$. Then we use the kernel method, obtain generating functions of each class, and find enumerating formulas. Lin and Yan studied the classification of the Wilf-equivalences for inversion sequences avoiding pairs of length-three patterns and showed that there are 48 Wilf classes among 78 pairs. In this paper, we solve six open cases for such pattern classes.

Sorting permutations with pattern-avoiding machines
In this work of thesis we introduce and study a new family of sorting devices, which we call pattern-avoiding machines. They consist of two stacks in series, equipped with a greedy procedure. On both stacks we impose a static constraint in terms of pattern containment: reading the content from top to bottom, the first stack is not allowed to contain occurrences of a given pattern $σ$, whereas the second one is not allowed to contain occurrences of $21$. By analyzing the behavior of pattern-avoiding machines, we aim to gain a better understanding of the problem of sorting permutations with two consecutive stacks, which is currently one of the most challenging open problems in combinatorics.

Pattern Avoidance in Parking Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we view parking functions viewed as labeled Dyck paths in order to study a notion of pattern avoidance first introduced by Remmel and Qiu. In particular we enumerate the parking functions avoiding any set of two or more patterns of length 3, and we obtain a number of well-known combinatorial sequences as a result. Along the way, we find bijections between specific sets of pattern-avoiding parking functions and a number of combinatorial objects such as partitions of polygons and trees with certain restrictions.
On pattern-avoiding permutons
Published in Random Structures & Algorithms, volume 65 (2024), issue 1, pages 46-60 • View Publication • BIB
The theory of limits of permutations leads to limit objects called permutons, which are certain Borel measures on the unit square. We prove that permutons avoiding a given permutation of order $k$ have a particularly simple structure. Namely, almost every fiber of the disintegration of the permuton (say, along the x-axis) consists only of atoms, at most $(k-1)$ many, and this bound is sharp. We use this to give a simple proof of the `permutation removal lemma'.

Pattern-Avoiding Fishburn Permutations and Ascent Sequences
A Fishburn permutation is a permutation which avoids the bivincular pattern $(231, \{1\}, \{1\})$, while an ascent sequence is a sequence of nonnegative integers in which each entry is less than or equal to one more than the number of ascents to its left. Fishburn permutations and ascent sequences are linked by a bijection $g$ of Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes, and Kitaev. We write $F_n(σ_1,\ldots,σ_k)$ to denote the set of Fishburn permutations of length $n$ which avoid each of $σ_1,\ldots,σ_k$ and we write $A_n(α_1,\ldots,α_k)$ to denote the set of ascent sequences which avoid each of $α_1,\ldots,α_k$. We settle a conjecture of Gil and Weiner by showing that $g$ restricts to a bijection between $F_n(3412)$ and $A_n(201)$. Building on work of Gil and Weiner, we use elementary techniques to enumerate $F_n(123)$ with respect to inversion number and number of left-to-right maxima, obtaining expressions in terms of $q$-binomial coefficients, and to enumerate $F_n(123,σ)$ for all $σ$. We use generating tree techniques to study the generating functions for $F_n(321, 1423)$, $F_n(321,3124)$, and $F_n(321,2143)$ with respect to inversion number and number of left-to-right maxima. We use these results to show $|F_n(321,1423)| = |F_n(321,3124)| = F_{n+2} - n - 1$, where $F_n$ is a Fibonacci number, and $|F_n(321,2143)| = 2^{n-1}$. We conclude with a variety of conjectures and open problems.

Pattern-avoiding even and odd Grassmannian permutations
Published in Australas. J. Combin. 86 (2023), 187-205 • Search Publication
In this paper, we investigate pattern avoidance of parity restricted (even or odd) Grassmannian permutations for patterns of sizes 3 and 4. We use a combination of direct counting and bijective techniques to provide recurrence relations, closed formulas, and generating functions for their corresponding enumerating sequences. In addition, we establish some connections to Dyck paths, directed multigraphs, weak compositions, and certain integer partitions.

Statistics on Almost-Fibonacci Pattern-Avoiding Permutations
Published in Minnesota Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics, 7 (2022) • Search Publication
We prove that $|Av_n(231,312,1432)|$, $|Av_n(312,321,1342)|$ $|Av_n(231,312,4321,21543)|$, and $ |Av_n(321,231,4123,21534)|$, are all equal to $F_{n+1} - 1$ where $F_n$ is the $n$-th Fibonacci number using the convention $F_0 = F_1 = 1$ and $Av_n(S)$ is the set of all permutations of length $n$ that avoid all of the patterns in the set $S$. To do this, we characterize the structures of the permutations in these sets in terms of Fibonacci permutations. Then, we further quantify the structures using statistics such as inversion number and a statistic that measures the length of Fibonacci subsequences. Finally, we encode these statistics in generating functions written in terms of the generating function for Fibonacci permutations. We use these generating functions to find analogs about recurrence relation and addition formulae of Fibonacci identities.

Length-Four Pattern Avoidance in Inversion Sequences
Published in Electron. J. Comb. Volume 29, Issue 4 (2022) P4.37 • View Publication • BIB
Inversion sequences of length $n$ are integer sequences $e_1,\ldots ,e_n$ with $0\le e_i<i$ for all $i$, which are in bijection with the permutations of length $n$. In this paper, we classify all Wilf equivalence classes of pattern-avoiding inversion sequences of length-4 patterns except for one case (whether 3012 $\equiv$ 3201) and enumerate some of the length-4 pattern-avoiding inversion sequences that are in the OEIS.

Restricted Grassmannian permutations
Published in Enumer. Comb. Appl. 2 (2022), no. 4, Paper S4PP6 • View Publication • BIB
A permutation is called Grassmannian if it has at most one descent. In this paper, we investigate pattern avoidance and parity restrictions for such permutations. As our main result, we derive formulas for the enumeration of Grassmannian permutations that avoid a classical pattern of arbitrary size. In addition, for patterns of the form $k12\cdots(k-1)$ and $23\cdots k1$, we provide combinatorial interpretations in terms of Dyck paths, and for $35124$-avoiding Grassmannian permutations, we give an explicit bijection to certain pattern-avoiding Schröder paths. Finally, we enumerate the subsets of odd and even permutations and discuss properties of their corresponding Dyck paths.
Pattern-avoiding ascent sequences of length 3
Published • View Publication • BIB
Pattern-avoiding ascent sequences have recently been related to set-partition problems and stack-sorting problems. While the generating functions for several length-3 pattern-avoiding ascent sequences are known, those avoiding 000, 100, 110, 120 are not known. We have generated extensive series expansions for these four cases, and analysed them in order to conjecture the asymptotic behaviour. We provide polynomial time algorithms for the 000 and 110 cases, and exponential time algorithms for the 100 and 120 cases. We also describe how the 000 polynomial time algorithm was detected somewhat mechanically given an exponential time algorithm. For 120-avoiding ascent sequences we find that the generating function has stretched-exponential behaviour and prove that the growth constant is the same as that for 201-avoiding ascent sequences, which is known. The other three generating functions have zero radius of convergence, which we also prove. For 000-avoiding ascent sequences we give what we believe to be the exact growth constant. We give the conjectured asymptotic behaviour for all four cases.
Classical length-5 pattern-avoiding permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We have made a systematic numerical study of the 16 Wilf classes of length-5 classical pattern-avoiding permutations from their generating function coefficients. We have extended the number of known coefficients in fourteen of the sixteen classes. Careful analysis, including sequence extension, has allowed us to estimate the growth constant of all classes, and in some cases to estimate the sub-dominant power-law term associated with the exponential growth. In six of the sixteen classes we find the familiar power-law behaviour, so that the coefficients behave like $s_n \sim C \cdot μ^n \cdot n^g,$ while in the remaining ten cases we find a stretched exponential as the most likely sub-dominant term, so that the coefficients behave like $s_n \sim C \cdot μ^n \cdot μ_1^{n^σ} \cdot n^g,$ where $0 < σ< 1.$ We have also classified the 120 possible permutations into the 16 distinct classes. We give compelling numerical evidence, and in one case a proof, that all 16 Wilf-class generating function coefficients can be represented as moments of a non-negative measure on $[0,\infty).$ Such sequences are known as {\em Stieltjes moment sequences}. They have a number of nice properties, such as log-convexity, which can be used to provide quite strong rigorous lower bounds. Stronger bounds still can be established under plausible monotonicity assumptions about the terms in the continued-fraction expansion of the generating functions implied by the Stieltjes property. In this way we provide strong (non-rigorous) lower bounds to the growth constants, which are sometimes within a few percent of the exact value.
Restricted generating trees for weak orderings
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 24, no. 1, Combinatorics (March 21, 2022) dmtcs:8350 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the study of pattern avoidance in the context of permutations and ordered partitions, we consider the enumeration of weak-ordering chains obtained as leaves of certain restricted rooted trees. A tree of order $n$ is generated by inserting a new variable into each node at every step. A node becomes a leaf either after $n$ steps or when a certain stopping condition is met. In this paper we focus on conditions of size 2 ($x=y$, $x<y$, or $x\le y$) and several conditions of size 3. Some of the cases considered here lead to the study of descent statistics of certain `almost' pattern-avoiding permutations.
On the generating functions of pattern-avoiding Motzkin paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
Using a recursive approach, we show that the generating function for sets of Motzkin paths avoiding a single (not necessarily consecutive) pattern is rational over $x$ and the Catalan generating function $C(x) = \frac{1-\sqrt{1-4x^2}}{2x^2}$, where $x$ keeps track of the length of the path. Moreover, an algorithm is provided for finding the generating function in the more general case of an arbitrary set of patterns. In addition, this algorithm allows us to find a combinatorial specification for pattern-avoiding Motzkin paths, which can be used not only for enumeration, but also for exhaustive and random generation.

Pattern-restricted permutations composed of 3-cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we characterize and enumerate pattern-avoiding permutations composed of only 3-cycles. In particular, we answer the question for the six patterns of length 3. We find that the number of permutations composed of $n$ 3-cycles that avoid the pattern 231 (equivalently 312) is given by $3^{n-1}$, while the generating function for the number of those that avoid the pattern 132 (equivalently 213) is given by a formula involving the generating functions for the well-known Motzkin numbers and Catalan numbers. The number of permutations composed of $n$ 3-cycles that avoid the pattern 321 is characterized by a weighted sum involving statistics on Dyck paths of semilength~$n$.

The feasible regions for consecutive patterns of pattern-avoiding permutations
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 346, No. 2, 2023 • View Publication • BIB
We study the feasible region for consecutive patterns of pattern-avoiding permutations. More precisely, given a family $\mathcal C$ of permutations avoiding a fixed set of patterns, we consider the limit of proportions of consecutive patterns on large permutations of $\mathcal C$. These limits form a region, which we call the consecutive patterns feasible region for $\mathcal C$. We determine the dimension of the consecutive patterns feasible region for all families $\mathcal C$ closed either for the direct sum or the skew sum. These families include for instance the ones avoiding a single pattern and all substitution-closed classes. We further show that these regions are always convex and we conjecture that they are always polytopes. We prove this conjecture when $\mathcal C$ is the family of $τ$-avoiding permutations, with either $τ$ of size three or $τ$ a monotone pattern. Furthermore, in these cases we give a full description of the vertices of these polytopes via cycle polytopes. Along the way, we discuss connections of this work with the problem of packing patterns in pattern-avoiding permutations and to the study of local limits for pattern-avoiding permutations.
