Card shuffling and the decomposition of tensor products

Let H be a subgroup of a finite group G. We use Markov chains to quantify how large r should be so that the decomposition of the r tensor power of the representation of G on cosets on H behaves (after renormalization) like the regular representation of G. For the case where G is a symmetric group and H a parabolic subgroup, we find that this question is precisely equivalent to the question of how large r should be so that r iterations of a shuffling method randomize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth shape of a permutation. This equivalence is rather remarkable, if only because the representation theory problem is related to a reversible Markov chain on the set of representations of the symmetric group, whereas the card shuffling problem is related to a nonreversible Markov chain on the symmetric group. The equivalence is also useful, and results on card shuffling can be applied to yield sharp results about the decomposition of tensor powers.
The centralizer of two numbers under the natural action of $S_k$ on [k], the maximal parabolic subgroup of $S_k$, and generalized patterns
A natural generalization of single pattern avoidance is subset avoidance. A complete study of subset avoidance for the case k=3 is carried out in [SS]. For k>3 situation becomes more complicated, as the number of possible cases grows rapidly. Recently, several authors have considered the case of general k when T has some nice algebraic properties. Barcucci, Del Lungo, Pergola, and Pinzani in [BDPP) treated the case when $T=T_1$ is the centralizer of k-1 and k under the natural action of $S_k$ on [k]. Mansour and Vainshtein in [MVp] treated the case when $T=T_2$ is maximal parabolic group of $S_k$.
Recently, Babson and Steingrimsson (see [BS]) introduced generalized permutations patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation.
In this paper we present an analogue with generalization for the case $T_1$ and for the case $T_2$ by using generalized patterns instead of classical patterns.

The asymptotic study of the conjugacy classes of a random element of the finite affine group leads one to define a probability measure on the set of all partitions of all positive integers. Four different probabilistic understandings of this measure are given--three using symmetric function theory and one using Markov chains. This leads to non-trivial enumerative results. Cycle index generating functions are derived and are used to compute the large dimension limiting probabilities that an element of the affine group is separable, cyclic, or semisimple and to study the convergence to these limits. This yields the first examples of such computations for a maximal parabolic subgroup of a finite classical group.

We find an explicit expression for the generating function of the number of permutations in S_n avoiding a subgroup of S_k generated by all but one simple transpositions. The generating function turns out to be rational, and its denominator is a rook polynomial for a rectangular board.
