We develop an algorithm for efficiently computing recursively defined functions on posets. We illustrate this algorithm by disproving conjectures about the game Subset Takeaway (Chomp on a hypercube) and computing the number of linear extensions of the lattice of a 7-cube and related lattices.

We give new bounds and asymptotic estimates on the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape in a variety of special cases. Our approach is based on Naruse's hook-length formula. We also compare our bounds with the existing bounds on the numbers of linear extensions of the corresponding posets.
Additive Combinatorics Using Equivariant Cohomology
We introduce a geometric method to study additive combinatorial problems. Using equivariant cohomology we reprove the Dias da Silva-Hamidoune theorem. We improve a result of Sun on the linear extension of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture. We generalize a theorem of G. Kós (the Grashopper problem) which in some sense is a simultaneous generalization of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture. We also prove a signed version of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture and the Grashopper problem. Most identities used are based on calculating the projective degree of an algebraic variety in two different ways.
The 1/3-2/3 Conjecture for ordered sets whose cover graph is a forest

A balanced pair in an ordered set $P=(V,\leq)$ is a pair $(x,y)$ of elements of $V$ such that the proportion of linear extensions of $P$ that put $x$ before $y$ is in the real interval $[1/3, 2/3]$. We define the notion of a good pair and claim any ordered set that has a good pair will satisfy the conjecture and furthermore every ordered set which is not totally ordered and has a forest as its cover graph has a good pair.
Connected Order Ideals and P-Partitions

Given a finite poset $P$, we associate a simple graph denoted by $G_P$ with all connected order ideals of $P$ as vertices, and two vertices are adjacent if and only if they have nonempty intersection and are incomparable with respect to set inclusion. We establish a bijection between the set of maximum independent sets of $G_P$ and the set of $P$-forests, introduced by Féray and Reiner in their study of the fundamental generating function $F_P(\textbf{x})$ associated with $P$-partitions. Based on this bijection, in the cases when $P$ is naturally labeled we show that $F_P(\textbf{x})$ can factorise, such that each factor is a summation of rational functions determined by maximum independent sets of a connected component of $G_P$. This approach enables us to give an alternative proof for Féray and Reiner's nice formula of $F_P(\textbf{x})$ for the case of $P$ being a naturally labeled forest with duplications. Another consequence of our result is a product formula to compute the number of linear extensions of $P$.

In this note we consider a Ramsey type result for partially ordered sets. In particular, we give an alternative short proof of a theorem for a posets with multiple linear extensions recently obtained by Solecki and Zhao.
Ramsey Partial Orders from Acyclic Graphs
We prove that finite partial orders with a linear extension form a Ramsey class. Our proof is based on the fact that class of acyclic graphs has the Ramsey property and uses the partite construction.

Extending the work of Yakoubov, we enumerate the linear extensions of comb posets that avoid certain length-$3$ patterns. We resolve many of Yakoubov's open problems and prove both of the conjectures from her paper.
On q-integrals over order polytopes

A combinatorial study of multiple $q$-integrals is developed. This includes a $q$-volume of a convex polytope, which depends upon the order of $q$-integration. A multiple $q$-integral over an order polytope of a poset is interpreted as a generating function of linear extensions of the poset. Specific modifications of posets are shown to give predictable changes in $q$-integrals over their respective order polytopes. This method is used to combinatorially evaluate some generalized $q$-beta integrals. One such application is a combinatorial interpretation of a $q$-Selberg integral. New generating functions for generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and reverse plane partitions are established. A $q$-analogue to a well known result in Ehrhart theory is generalized using $q$-volumes and $q$-Ehrhart polynomials.
Maximum Semidefinite and Linear Extension Complexity of Families of Polytopes

We relate the maximum semidefinite and linear extension complexity of a family of polytopes to the cardinality of this family and the minimum pairwise Hausdorff distance of its members. This result directly implies a known lower bound on the maximum semidefinite extension complexity of 0/1-polytopes. We further show how our result can be used to improve on the corresponding bounds known for polygons with integer vertices.
Our geometric proof builds upon nothing else than a simple well-known property of maximum volume inscribed ellipsoids of convex bodies. In particular, it does not rely on factorizations over the semidefinite cone and thus avoids involved procedures of balancing them as required, e.g., in [Briet, Dadush & Pokutta 2015]. We hope that revealing the geometry behind the phenomenon opens doors for further results.
Moreover, we show that the linear extension complexity of every d-dimensional 0/1-polytope is bounded from above by O(2^d / d).
Pattern Avoiding Linear Extensions of Rectangular Posets

Inspired by Yakoubov's 2015 investigation of pattern avoiding linear extensions of the posets called combs, we study pattern avoiding linear extensions of rectangular posets. These linear extensions are closely related to standard tableaux. For positive integers $s$ and $t$ we consider two natural rectangular partial orders on $\{1,2,\ldots,s t\}$, which we call the NE rectangular order and the EN rectangular order. First we enumerate linear extensions of both rectangular orders avoiding most sets of patterns of length three. Then we use both a generating tree and a bijection to show that the linear extensions of the EN rectangular order which avoid 1243 are counted by the Fuss-Catalan numbers. Next we use the transfer matrix method to enumerate linear extensions of the EN rectangular order which avoid 2143. Finally, we open an investigation of the distribution of the inversion number on pattern avoiding linear extensions.
Multivariate P-Eulerian polynomials
arXiv only
The P-Eulerian polynomial counts the linear extensions of a labeled partially ordered set, P, by their number of descents. It is known that the P-Eulerian polynomials are real-rooted for various classes of posets P. The purpose of this paper is to extend these results to polynomials in several variables. To this end we study multivariate extensions of P-Eulerian polynomials and prove that for certain posets these polynomials are stable, i.e., non-vanishing whenever all variables are in the upper half-plane of the complex plane. A natural setting for our proofs is the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra of permutations (or the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions). In the process we identify an algebra on Dyck paths, which to our knowledge has not been studied before.

We study the number of linear extensions of a partial order with a given proportion of comparable pairs of elements, and estimate the maximum and minimum possible numbers. We also consider a random interval partial order on $n$ elements, which has close to a third of the pairs comparable with high probability: we show that the number of linear extensions is $n! \, 2^{-Θ(n)}$ with high probability.

We investigate pattern avoidance in permutations satisfying some additional restrictions. These are naturally considered in terms of avoiding patterns in linear extensions of certain forest-like partially ordered sets, which we call binary shrub forests. In this context, we enumerate forests avoiding patterns of length three. In four of the five non-equivalent cases, we present explicit enumerations by exhibiting bijections with certain lattice paths bounded above by the line $y=\ell x$, for some $\ell\in\mathbb{Q}^+$, one of these being the celebrated Duchon's club paths with $\ell=2/3$. In the remaining case, we use the machinery of analytic combinatorics to determine the minimal polynomial of its generating function, and deduce its growth rate.
Length of an intersection
A poset $\bfp$ is well-partially ordered (WPO) if all its linear extensions are well orders~; the supremum of ordered types of these linear extensions is the {\em length}, $\ell(\bfp)$ of $\bfp$. We prove that if the vertex set $X$ of $\bfp$ is infinite, of cardinality $κ$, and the ordering $\leq$ is the intersection of finitely many partial orderings $\leq_i$ on $X$, $1\leq i\leq n$,
then, letting $\ell(X,\leq_i)=κ\multordby q_i+r_i$, with $r_i<κ$, denote the euclidian division by $κ$ (seen as an initial ordinal) of the length of the corresponding poset~:\[ \ell(\bfp)< κ\multordby\bigotimes_{1\leq i\leq n}q_i+ \Big|\sum_{1\leq i\leq n} r_i\Big|^+ \] where $|\sum r_i|^+$ denotes the least initial ordinal greater than the ordinal $\sum r_i$. This inequality is optimal (for $n\geq 2$).
Calculating Greene's function via root polytopes and subdivision algebras

Greene's rational function $Ψ_P({\bf x})$ is a sum of certain rational functions in ${\bf x}=(x_1, \ldots, x_n)$ over the linear extensions of the poset $P$ (which has $n$ elements), which he introduced in his study of the Murnaghan-Nakayama formula for the characters of the symmetric group. In recent work Boussicault, Féray, Lascoux and Reiner showed that $Ψ_P({\bf x})$ equals a valuation on a cone and calculated $Ψ_P({\bf x})$ for several posets this way. In this paper we give an expression for $Ψ_P({\bf x})$ for any poset $P$. We obtain such a formula using dissections of root polytopes. Moreover, we use the subdivision algebra of root polytopes to show that in certain instances $Ψ_P({\bf x})$ can be expressed as a product formula, thus giving a compact alternative proof of Greene's original result and its generalizations.
COMs: Complexes of Oriented Matroids

In his seminal 1983 paper, Jim Lawrence introduced lopsided sets and featured them as asymmetric counterparts of oriented matroids, both sharing the key property of strong elimination. Moreover, symmetry of faces holds in both structures as well as in the so-called affine oriented matroids. These two fundamental properties (formulated for covectors) together lead to the natural notion of "conditional oriented matroid" (abbreviated COM). These novel structures can be characterized in terms of three cocircuits axioms, generalizing the familiar characterization for oriented matroids. We describe a binary composition scheme by which every COM can successively be erected as a certain complex of oriented matroids, in essentially the same way as a lopsided set can be glued together from its maximal hypercube faces. A realizable COM is represented by a hyperplane arrangement restricted to an open convex set. Among these are the examples formed by linear extensions of ordered sets, generalizing the oriented matroids corresponding to the permutohedra. Relaxing realizability to local realizability, we capture a wider class of combinatorial objects: we show that non-positively curved Coxeter zonotopal complexes give rise to locally realizable COMs.
Gorenstein Fano polytopes arising from order polytopes and chain polytopes
Richard Stanley introduced the order polytope $\mathcal{O}(P)$ and the chain polytope $\mathcal{C}(P)$ arising from a finite partially ordered set $P$, and showed that the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{O}(P)$ is equal to that of $\mathcal{C}(P)$. In addition, the unimodular equivalence problem of $\mathcal{O}(P)$ and $\mathcal{C}(P)$ was studied by the first author and Nan Li. In the present paper, three integral convex polytopes $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{O}(Q))$, $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ and $Γ(\mathcal{C}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$, where $P$ and $Q$ are partially ordered sets with $| P | = | Q |$, will be studied. First, it will be shown that the Ehrhart polynomial of $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ coincides with that of $Γ(\mathcal{C}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$. Furthermore, when $P$ and $Q$ possess a common linear extension, it will be proved that these three convex polytopes have the same Ehrhart polynomial. Second, the problem of characterizing partially ordered sets $P$ and $Q$ for which $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{O}(Q))$ or $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ or $Γ(\mathcal{C}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ is a smooth Fano polytope will be solved. Finally, when these three polytopes are smooth Fano polytopes, the unimodular equivalence problem of these three polytopes will be discussed.

Exceptional sequences are certain ordered sequences of quiver representations. We introduce a class of objects called strand diagrams and use this model to classify exceptional sequences of representations of a quiver whose underlying graph is a type $A_n$ Dynkin diagram. We also use variations of this model to classify c-matrices of such quivers, to interpret exceptional sequences as linear extensions of posets, and to give a simple bijection between exceptional sequences and certain chains in the lattice of noncrossing partitions. This work extends a classification of exceptional sequences for the linearly-ordered quiver obtained in an earlier paper by the first and third authors.
