Faces of Directed Edge Polytopes
Given a finite quiver (directed graph) without loops and multiedges, the convex hull of the column vector of the incidence matrix is called the directed edge polytope and is an interesting example of lattice polytopes. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of facets of the directed edge polytope of an arbitrary finite quiver without loops and multiedges in terms of the connectivity and the existence of a rank function. Our result can be regarded as an extension of the result of Higashitani et al. on facets of symmetric edge polytopes to directed edge polytopes. When the quiver in question has a rank function, we obtain a characterization of faces of arbitrary dimensions.

A $d$-dimensional lattice polytope $P$ is Gorenstein if it has a multiple $r P$ that is a reflexive polytope up to translation by a lattice vector. The difference $d+1-r$ is called the degree of $P$. We show that a Gorenstein polytope is a lattice pyramid if its dimension is at least three times its degree. This was previously conjectured by Batyrev and Juny. We also present a refined conjecture and prove it for IDP Gorenstein polytopes.
Facets of Symmetric Edge Polytopes for Graphs with Few Edges
Symmetric edge polytopes, also called adjacency polytopes, are lattice polytopes determined by simple undirected graphs. We introduce the integer array \(\mathrm{maxf}(n,m)\) giving the maximum number of facets of a symmetric edge polytope for a connected graph having \(n\) vertices and \(m\) edges, and the corresponding sequence \(\mathrm{minf}(n,m)\) of minimal values. We establish formulas for the number of facets obtained in several classes of sparse graphs and provide partial progress toward conjectures that identify facet-maximizing graphs in these classes. These formulas are combinatorial in nature and lead to independently interesting observations and conjectures regarding integer sequences defined by sums of products of binomial coefficients.

In this article we introduce a new family of lattice polytopes with rational linear precision. For this purpose, we define a new class of discrete statistical models that we call multinomial staged tree models. We prove that these models have rational maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) and give a criterion for these models to be log-linear. Our main result is then obtained by applying Garcia-Puente and Sottile's theorem that establishes a correspondence between polytopes with rational linear precision and log-linear models with rational MLE. Throughout this article we also study the interplay between the primitive collections of the normal fan of a polytope with rational linear precision and the shape of the Horn matrix of its corresponding statistical model. Finally, we investigate lattice polytopes arising from toric multinomial staged tree models, in terms of the combinatorics of their tree representations.

We introduce machine learning methodology to the study of lattice polytopes. With supervised learning techniques, we predict standard properties such as volume, dual volume, reflexivity, etc, with accuracies up to 100%. We focus on 2d polygons and 3d polytopes with Plücker coordinates as input, which out-perform the usual vertex representation.

A lattice polytope translated by a rational vector is called an almost integral polytope. In this paper we investigate Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of almost integral polytopes. We study the relationship between the shape of the polytopes and algebraic properties of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials. In particular, we prove that lattice zonotopes and centrally symmetric lattice polytopes are characterized by Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of their rational translations.
Discrete intrinsic volumes
For a convex lattice polytope $P\subset \mathbb R^d$ of dimension $d$ with vertices in $\mathbb Z^d$, denote by $L(P)$ its discrete volume which is defined as the number of integer points inside $P$. The classical result due to Ehrhart says that for a positive integer $n$, the function $L(nP)$ is a polynomial in $n$ of degree $d$ whose leading coefficient is the volume of $P$. In particular, $L(nP)$ approximates the volume of $nP$ for large $n$.
In convex geometry, one of the central notion which generalizes the volume is the intrinsic volumes. The main goal of this paper is to introduce their discrete counterparts. In particular, we show that for them the analogue of the Ehrhart result holds, where the volume is replaced by the intrinsic volume.
We also introduce and study a notion of Grassmann valuation which generalizes both the discrete volume and the solid-angle valuation introduced by Reeve and Macdonald.

We study the integer decomposition property of lattice polytopes associated with the $n$-dimensional smooth complete fans with at most $n+3$ rays. Using the classification of smooth complete fans by Kleinschmidt and Batyrev and a reduction to lower dimensional polytopes, we prove the integer decomposition property for lattice polytopes in this setting.

For a given lattice polytope $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$, consider the space $\mathcal{L}_P$ of trivariate polynomials over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, whose Newton polytopes are contained in $P$. We give an upper bound for the maximum number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-zeros of polynomials in $\mathcal{L}_P$ in terms of the Minkowski length of $P$ and $q$, the size of the field. Consequently, this produces lower bounds for the minimum distance of toric codes defined by evaluating elements of $\mathcal{L}_P$ at the points of the algebraic torus $(\mathbb{F}_q^*)^3$. Our approach is based on understanding factorizations of polynomials in $\mathcal{L}_P$ with the largest possible number of non-unit factors. The related combinatorial result that we obtain is a description of Minkowski sums of lattice polytopes contained in $P$ with the largest possible number of non-trivial summands.
Do alcoved lattice polytopes have unimodal h*-vector?
We show that h*-vectors of alcoved polytopes P in R^n (of Lie type A) are unimodal if they contain interior lattice points and their facets have lattice distance 1 to the set of interior lattice points. The maximal possible such distance for general alcoved polytopes is shown to be dim(P)-1. A secondary purpose of the paper is to serve as a guide to previous work surrounding unimodality of h*-vectors of alcoved polytopes and related questions.
The Integer Decomposition Property and Weighted Projective Space Simplices
Reflexive lattice polytopes play a key role in combinatorics, algebraic geometry, physics, and other areas. One important class of lattice polytopes are lattice simplices defining weighted projective spaces. We investigate the question of when a reflexive weighted projective space simplex has the integer decomposition property. We provide a complete classification of reflexive weighted projective space simplices having the integer decomposition property for the case when there are at most three distinct non-unit weights, and conjecture a general classification for an arbitrary number of distinct non-unit weights. Further, for any weighted projective space simplex and $m\geq 1$, we define the $m$-th reflexive stabilization, a reflexive weighted projective space simplex. We prove that when $m$ is $2$ or greater, reflexive stabilizations do not have the integer decomposition property. We also prove that the Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomial of any sufficiently large reflexive stabilization is not unimodal and has only $1$ and $2$ as coefficients. We use this construction to generate interesting examples of reflexive weighted projective space simplices that are near the boundary of both $h^*$-unimodality and the integer decomposition property.

PQ-type adjacency polytopes $\nabla^{\rm PQ}_G$ are lattice polytopes arising from finite graphs $G$. There is a connection between $\nabla^{\rm PQ}_G$ and the engineering problem known as power-flow study, which models the balance of electric power on a network of power generation. In particular, the normalized volume of $\nabla^{\rm PQ}_G$ plays a central role. In the present paper, we focus the case where $G$ is a join graph. In fact, formulas of the $h^*$-polynomial and the normalized volume of $\nabla^{\rm PQ}_G$ of a join graph $G$ are presented. Moreover, we give explicit formulas of the $h^*$-polynomial and the normalized volume of $\nabla^{\rm PQ}_G$ when $G$ is a complete multipartite graph or a wheel graph.

A directed edge polytope $\mathcal{A}_G$ is a lattice polytope arising from root system $A_n$ and a finite directed graph $G$. If every directed edge of $G$ belongs to a directed cycle in $G$, then $\mathcal{A}_G$ is terminal and reflexive, that is, one can associate this polytope to a Gorenstein toric Fano variety $X_G$ with terminal singularities. It is shown by Totaro that a toric Fano variety which is smooth in codimension $2$ and $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial in codimension $3$ is rigid. In the present paper, we classify all directed graphs $G$ such that $X_G$ is a toric Fano variety which is smooth in codimension $2$ and $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial in codimension $3$.

We show that: (1) unimodular simplices in a lattice 3-polytope cover a neighborhood of the boundary of the polytope if and only if the polytope is very ample, (2) the convex hull of lattice points in every ellipsoid in R^3 has a unimodular cover, and (3) for every d at least 5, there are ellipsoids in R^d, such that the convex hulls of the lattice points in these ellipsoids are not even normal. Part (3) answers a question of Bruns, Michalek, and the author.

Gorenstein Fano toric degenerations
We propose a refined but natural notion of toric degenerations that respect a given embedding and show that within this framework a Gorenstein Fano variety can only be degenerated to a Gorenstein Fano toric variety if it is embedded via its anticanonical embedding. This also gives a precise criterion for reflexive polytopes to appear, which might be required for applications in mirror symmetry. For the proof of this statement we will study polytopes whose polar dual is a lattice polytope. As a byproduct we generalize a connection between the number of lattice points in a rational convex polytope and the Euler characteristic of an associated torus invariant rational Weil divisor, allowing us to show that Ehrhart-Macdonald Reciprocity and Serre Duality are equivalent statements for a broad class of varieties. Additionally, we conjecture a necessary and sufficient condition for the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational convex polytope to be a polynomial. Finally, we show that the anticanonical line bundle on a Gorenstein Fano variety with at worst rational singularities is uniquely determined by a combinatorial condition of its Hilbert polynomial.

We prove that for every complex classical group $G$ the string polytope associated to a special reduced decomposition and any dominant integral weight $λ$ will be a lattice polytope if and only if the highest weight representation of the Lie algebra of $G$ with highest weight $λ$ integrates to a representation of $G$ itself. This affirms an earlier conjecture and shows that every partial flag variety of a complex classical group admits a flat projective degeneration to a Gorenstein Fano toric variety.
Castelnuovo polytopes

It is known that the sectional genus of a polarized variety has an upper bound, which is an extension of the Castelnuovo bound on the genus of a projective curve. Polarized varieties whose sectional genus achieves this bound are called Castelnuovo. On the other hand, a lattice polytope is called Castelnuovo if the associated polarized toric variety is Castelnuovo. Kawaguchi characterized Castelnuovo polytopes having interior lattice points in terms of their $h^*$-vectors. In this paper, as a generalization of this result, a characterization of all Castelnuovo polytopes will be presented. Finally, as an application of our characterization, we give a sufficient criterion for a lattice polytope to be IDP.

The combinatorics of reduced words and commutation classes plays an important role in geometric representation theory. A string polytope is a lattice polytope associated to each reduced word of the longest element $w_0$ in the symmetric group which encodes the character of a certain irreducible representation of a Lie group of type $A$. In this paper, we provide a recursive formula for the number of reduced words of $w_0$ such that the corresponding string polytopes are combinatorially equivalent to a Gelfand-Cetlin polytope. The recursive formula involves the number of standard Young tableaux of shifted shape. We also show that each commutation class is completely determined by a list of quantities called indices.
