A short, elementary proof is given of the result: The number of components of a link arising from a medial graph M(G) by resolving vertices is equal to the nullity of the mod-2 Laplacian matrix of the graph G.
The Bounds for Eigenvalues of Normalized and Signless Laplacian Matrices
In this paper, we obtain the bounds of the extreme eigenvalues of a normalized and signless Laplacian matrices using by their traces. In addition, we determine the bounds for k-th eigenvalues of normalized and signless Laplacian matrices.

We consider a system of qubits coupled via nearest-neighbour interaction governed by the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. We further suppose that all coupling constants are equal to $1$. We are interested in determining which graphs allow for a transfer of quantum state with fidelity equal to $1$. To answer this question, it is enough to consider the action of the Laplacian matrix of the graph in a vector space of suitable dimension.
Our main result is that if the underlying graph is a tree with more than two vertices, then perfect state transfer does not happen. We also explore related questions, such as what happens in bipartite graphs and graphs with an odd number of spanning trees. Finally, we consider the model based on the $XY$-Hamiltonian, whose action is equivalent to the action of the adjacency matrix of the graph. In this case, we conjecture that perfect state transfer does not happen in trees with more than three vertices.
On the Meeting Time for Two Random Walks on a Regular Graph
We provide an analysis of the expected meeting time of two independent random walks on a regular graph. For 1-D circle and 2-D torus graphs, we show that the expected meeting time can be expressed as the sum of the inverse of non-zero eigenvalues of a suitably defined Laplacian matrix. We also conjecture based on empirical evidence that this result holds more generally for simple random walks on arbitrary regular graphs. Further, we show that the expected meeting time for the 1-D circle of size $N$ is $Θ(N^2)$, and for a 2-D $N \times N$ torus it is $Θ(N^2 log N)$.

Let $G$ be a simple graph and $Q(G)$ be the signless Laplacian matrix of $G$. Let $S_α(G)$ be the sum of the $α$-th powers of the nonzero eigenvalues of $Q(G)$. We disprove two conjectures by You and Yang on the extremal values of $S_α(G)$ among bipartite graphs and among graphs with bounded connectivity.
On the Smallest Eigenvalue of Grounded Laplacian Matrices

We provide upper and lower bounds on the smallest eigenvalue of grounded Laplacian matrices (which are matrices obtained by removing certain rows and columns of the Laplacian matrix of a given graph). The gap between the upper and lower bounds depends on the ratio of the smallest and largest components of the eigenvector corresponding to the smallest eigenvalue of the grounded Laplacian. We provide a graph-theoretic bound on this ratio, and subsequently obtain a tight characterization of the smallest eigenvalue for certain classes of graphs. Specifically, for Erdos-Renyi random graphs, we show that when a (sufficiently small) set $S$ of rows and columns is removed from the Laplacian, and the probability $p$ of adding an edge is sufficiently large, the smallest eigenvalue of the grounded Laplacian asymptotically almost surely approaches $|S|p$. We also show that for random $d$-regular graphs with a single row and column removed, the smallest eigenvalue is $Θ(\frac{d}{n})$. Our bounds have applications to the study of the convergence rate in continuous-time and discrete-time consensus dynamics with stubborn or leader nodes.

In this paper, we consider continuous-time quantum walks (CTQWs) on finite graphs determined by the Laplacian matrices. By introducing fully interconnected graph decomposition of given graphs, we show a decomposition method for the Laplacian matrices. Using the decomposition method, we show several conditions for graph structure which return probability of CTQW tends to 1 while the number of vertices tends to infinity.
On a Problem of Harary and Schwenk on Graphs with Distinct Eigenvalues
Harary and Schwenk posed the problem forty years ago: Which graphs have distinct adjacency eigenvalues? In this paper, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for an Hermitian matrix with simple spectral radius and distinct eigenvalues. As its application, we give an algebraic characterization to the Harary-Schwenk's problem. As an extension of their problem, we also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a positive semidefinite matrix with simple least eigenvalue and distinct eigenvalues, which can provide an algebraic characterization to their problem with respect to the (normalized) Laplacian matrix.
Randić energy and Randić eigenvalues
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$, and $d_i$ the degree of a vertex $v_i$ of $G$. The Randić matrix ${\bf R}=(r_{ij})$ of $G$ is defined by $r_{ij} = 1 / \sqrt{d_jd_j}$ if the vertices $v_i$ and $v_j$ are adjacent in $G$ and $r_{ij}=0$ otherwise. The normalized signless Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{Q}$ is defined as $\mathcal{Q} =I+\bf{R}$, where $I$ is the identity matrix. The Randić energy is the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of $\bf{R}$. In this paper, we find a relation between the normalized signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ and the Randić energy of its subdivided graph $S(G)$. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to have exactly $k$ and distinct Randić eigenvalues.
A Polyhedral Proof of the Matrix Tree Theorem
The classical matrix tree theorem relates the number of spanning trees of a connected graph with the product of the nonzero eigenvalues of its Laplacian matrix. The class of regular matroids generalizes that of graphical matroids, and a generalization of the matrix tree theorem holds for this wider class.
We give a new, geometric proof of this fact by showing via a dissect-and-rearrange argument that two combinatorially distinct zonotopes associated to a regular matroid have the same volume. Along the way we prove that for a regular oriented matroid represented by a unimodular matrix, the lattice spanned by its cocircuits coincides with the lattice spanned by the rows of the representation matrix.
Finally, by extending our setup to the weighted case we give new proofs of recent results of An et al. on weighted graphs, and extend them to cover regular matroids.
No use is made of the Cauchy-Binet Theorem nor divisor theory on graphs.
The Obstacle Problem on Graphs and Other Results
Our primary motivation is existence and uniqueness for the obstacle problem on graphs. That is, we look for unique solutions to the problem $Lu = χ_{\{u>0\}}$, where $L$ is the Laplacian matrix associated to a graph, and $u$ is a nonnegative real-valued vector with preassigned zero coordinates and positive coordinates to be determined. In the course of solving this problem, we make a detour into the study of Laplacian matrices themselves. First, we present the row reduced echelon form of such matrices and determine the invertibility of proper square submatrices. Next, we determine eigenvalues of several simple Laplacians. In this context, we introduce a new polynomial called the generalized characteristic polynomial that allows us to compute (theoretically, if inefficiently)the usual characteristic polynomial for trees by inspection of the graph. Finally, we give our solution to the obstacle problem on graphs and discuss other components of the obstacle problem, which we investigate in future research.

There is a Paley graph for each prime power $q$ such that $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$. The vertex set is the field $\mathbb Fq$ and two vertices $x$ and $y$ are joined by an edge if and only if $x-y$ is a nonzero square of $\mathbb Fq$. We compute the Smith normal forms of the adjacency matrix and Laplacian matrix of a Paley graph.

Let D be a strongly connected digraph and A(D) be the adjacency matrix of D. Let diag(D) be the diagonal matrix with outdegrees of the vertices of D and Q(D) = diag(D) + A(D) be the signless Laplacian matrix of D. The spectral radius of Q(D) is called the signless Laplacian spectral radius of D, denoted by q(D). In this paper, we give sharp bound on q(D) with outdegree sequence and compare the bound with some known bounds, establish some sharp upper or lower bound on q(D) with some given parameter such as clique number, girth or vertex connectivity, and characterize the corresponding extremal digraph or proposed open problem. In addition, we also determine the unique digraph which achieves the minimum (or maximum), the second minimum (or maximum), the third minimum, the fourth minimum spectral radius and signless Laplacian spectral radius among all strongly connected digraphs, and answer the open problem proposed by Lin-Shu [H.Q. Lin, J.L. Shu, A note on the spectral characterization of strongly connected bicyclic digraphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 436 (2012) 2524{2530].

The critical ideals of a graph are the determinantal ideals of the generalized Laplacian matrix associated to a graph. In this article we provide a set of minimal forbidden graphs for the set of graphs with at most three trivial critical ideals. Then we use these forbidden graphs to characterize the graphs with at most three trivial critical ideals and clique number equal to 2 and 3.
Spectral results for the dominating induced matching problem
A matching M is a dominating induced matching of a graph, if every edge of the graph is either in $M$ or has a common end-vertex with exactly one edge in $M$. The concept of complete dominating induced matching is introduced as graphs where the vertex set can be partitioned into two subsets, one of them inducing an $1$-regular graph and the other defining an independent set and such that all the remaining edges connect each vertex of one set to each vertex of the other. The principal eigenvectors of the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrices of graphs with complete dominating induced matchings are characterized and, therefore, the polynomial time recognition of graphs with complete dominating induced matchings is stated. The adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian spectrum of graphs with complete dominating induced matchings are characterized. Finally, several upper and lower bounds on the cardinality of a dominating induced matching obtained from the eigenvalues of the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrices are deduced and examples for which some of these bounds are tight are presented.

Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $\mathcal{L}(G,λ)=\sum_{k=0}^n (-1)^{k}c_{k}(G)λ^{n-k}$ be the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix. Motivated by Ilić and Ilić's conjecture [A. Ilić, M. Ilić, Laplacian coefficients of trees with given number of leaves or vertices of degree two, Linear Algebra and its Applications 431(2009)2195-2202.] on all extremal graphs which minimize all the Laplacian coefficients in the set $\mathcal{U}_{n,l}$ of all $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with the number of leaves $l$, we investigate properties of the minimal elements in the partial set $(\mathcal{U}_{n,l}^g, \preceq)$ of the Laplacian coefficients, where $\mathcal{U}_{n,l}^g$ denote the set of $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with the number of leaves $l$ and girth $g$. These results are used to disprove their conjecture. Moreover, the graphs with minimum Laplacian-like energy in $\mathcal{U}_{n,l}^g$ are also studied.

Network representations are useful for describing the structure of a large variety of complex systems. Although most studies of real-world networks suppose that nodes are connected by only a single type of edge, most natural and engineered systems include multiple subsystems and layers of connectivity. This new paradigm has attracted a great deal of attention and one fundamental challenge is to characterize multilayer networks both structurally and dynamically. One way to address this question is to study the spectral properties of such networks. Here, we apply the framework of graph quotients, which occurs naturally in this context, and the associated eigenvalue interlacing results, to the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of undirected multilayer networks. Specifically, we describe relationships between the eigenvalue spectra of multilayer networks and their two most natural quotients, the network of layers and the aggregate network, and show the dynamical implications of working with either of the two simplified representations. Our work thus contributes in particular to the study of dynamical processes whose critical properties are determined by the spectral properties of the underlying network.
The domination number and the least $Q$-eigenvalue

A vertex set $D$ of a graph $G$ is said to be a dominating set if every vertex of $V(G)\setminus D$ is adjacent to at least a vertex in $D$, and the domination number $γ(G)$ ($γ$, for short) is the minimum cardinality of all dominating sets of $G$. For a graph, the least $Q$-eigenvalue is the least eigenvalue of its signless Laplacian matrix. In this paper, for a nonbipartite graph with both order $n$ and domination number $γ$, we show that $n\geq 3γ-1$, and show that it contains a unicyclic spanning subgraph with the same domination number $γ$. By investigating the relation between the domination number and the least $Q$-eigenvalue of a graph, we minimize the least $Q$-eigenvalue among all the nonbipartite graphs with given domination number.

We give upper and lower bounds for the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix by using its average 2-row sums, and characterize the equality cases if the matrix is irreducible. We also apply these bounds to various nonnegative matrices associated with a graph, including the adjacency matrix, the signless Laplacian matrix, the distance matrix, the distance signless Laplacian matrix, and the reciprocal distance matrix.
Some sharp bounds on the distance signless Laplacian spectral radius of graphs
M. Aouchiche and P. Hansen proposed the distance Laplacian and the distance signless Laplacian of a connected graph [Two Laplacians for the distance matrix of a graph, LAA 439 (2013) 21{33]. In this paper, we obtain three theorems on the sharp upper bounds of the spectral radius of a nonnegative matrix, then apply these theorems to signless Laplacian matrices and the distance signless Laplacian matrices to obtain some sharp bounds on the spectral radius, respectively. We also proposed a known result about the sharp bound of the signless Laplacian spectral radius has a defect.
