Fractional coloring with local demands and applications to degree-sequence bounds on the independence number
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B. Volume 169, November 2024, Pages 298-337 • View Publication • BIB
In a fractional coloring, vertices of a graph are assigned measurable subsets of the real line and adjacent vertices receive disjoint subsets; the fractional chromatic number of a graph is at most $k$ if it has a fractional coloring in which each vertex receives a subset of $[0, 1]$ of measure at least $1/k$. We introduce and develop the theory of "fractional colorings with local demands" wherein each vertex "demands" a certain amount of color that is determined by local parameters such as its degree or the clique number of its neighborhood. This framework provides the natural setting in which to generalize degree-sequence type bounds on the independence number. Indeed, by Linear Programming Duality, all of the problems we study have an equivalent formulation as a problem concerning weighted independence numbers, and they often imply new bounds on the independence number. Our results and conjectures are inspired by many of the most classical results and important open problems concerning the independence number and the chromatic number, often simultaneously. We conjecture a local strengthening of both Shearer's bound on the independence number of triangle-free graphs and the fractional relaxation of Molloy's recent bound on their chromatic number, as well as a longstanding problem of Ajtai et al.\ on the independence number of $K_r$-free graphs and the fractional relaxations of Reed's $ω, Δ, χ$ Conjecture and the Total Coloring Conjecture. We prove an approximate version of the first two, and we prove "local demands" versions of Vizing's Theorem and of some $χ$-boundedness results.

A note on independence number, connectivity and $k$-ended tree
A $k$-ended tree is a tree with at most $k$ leaves. In this note, we give a simple proof for the following theorem. Let $G$ be a connected graph and $k$ be an integer ($k\geq 2$). Let $S$ be a vertex subset of $G$ such that $α_{G}(S) \leq k + κ_{G}(S)- 1.$ Then, $G$ has a $k$-ended tree which covers $S.$ Moreover, the condition is sharp.

Duality of Graph Invariants
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a new set of duality relations between weighted, combinatoric invariants of a graph $G$. The dualities arise from a non-linear transform $\mathfrak{B}$, acting on the weight function $p$. We define $\mathfrak{B}$ on a space of real-valued functions $\mathcal{O}$ and investigate its properties. We show that three invariants (weighted independence number, weighted Lovász number, and weighted fractional packing number) are fixed points of $\mathfrak{B}^{2}$, but the weighted Shannon capacity is not. We interpret these invariants in the study of quantum non-locality.

Too Many Hats
Published • View Publication • BIB
A puzzle about prisoners trying to identify the color of a hat on their head leads to a version where there are k more hats than prisoners. This generalized puzzle is related to the independence number of the arrangement graph A(m, n) and to Steiner systems and other designs. A natural conjecture is that perfect hat-guessing strategies exist in all cases, where "perfect" means that the success probability is 1/(k+1). This is true when k = 1, but we show that it is false when k = 2. Further, we present a strategy with success rate at least 1/O(k log k), independent of the number of prisoners.
Independence numbers of some double vertex graphs and pair graphs
Published in Revista Colombiana de Matemáticas, 58(1) (2024), 47-65 • View Publication • BIB
The combinatorial properties of double vertex graphs has been widely studied since the 90's. However only very few results are know about the independence number of such graphs. In this paper we obtain the independence numbers of the double vertex graphs of fan graphs and wheel graphs. Also we obtain the independence numbers of the pair graphs, that is a generalization of the double vertex graphs, of some families of graphs.
On the null structure of bipartite graphs without cycles of length a multiple of 4
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this work we study the null space of bipartite graphs without cycles of length multiple of $4$, and its relation to structural properties. We decompose them into two subgraphs: $C_N(G)$ and $C_S(G)$. $C_N(G)$ has perfect matching and its adjacency matrix is nonsingular. $C_S(G)$ has a unique maximum independent set and the dimension of its null space equals the dimension of the null space of $G$. Even more, we show that the fundamental spaces of $G$ are the direct sum of the fundamental spaces of $C_N(G)$ and $C_S(G)$. We also obtain formulas relating the independence number and the matching number of a $C_{4k}$-free bipartite graph with $C_N(G)$ and $C_S(G)$, and the dimensions of the fundamental spaces. Among other results, we show that the rank of a $C_{4k}$-free bipartite graph is twice its matching number, generalizing a result for trees due to Bevis et al \cite{bevis1995ranks}, and Cvetković and Gutman \cite{D1972}. About maximum independent sets, we show that the intersection of all maximum independent sets of a $C_{4k}$-free bipartite graph coincides with the support of its null space.

Quantum asymptotic spectra of graphs and non-commutative graphs, and quantum Shannon capacities
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study quantum versions of the Shannon capacity of graphs and non-commutative graphs. We introduce the asymptotic spectrum of graphs with respect to quantum and entanglement-assisted homomorphisms, and we introduce the asymptotic spectrum of non-commutative graphs with respect to entanglement-assisted homomorphisms. We apply Strassen's spectral theorem (J. Reine Angew. Math., 1988) in order to obtain dual characterizations of the corresponding Shannon capacities and asymptotic preorders in terms of their asymptotic spectra. This work extends the study of the asymptotic spectrum of graphs initiated by Zuiddam (Combinatorica, 2019) to the quantum domain. We then exhibit spectral points in the new quantum asymptotic spectra and discuss their relations with the asymptotic spectrum of graphs. In particular, we prove that the (fractional) real and complex Haemers bounds upper bound the quantum Shannon capacity, which is defined as the regularization of the quantum independence number (Mančinska and Roberson, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2016), and that the fractional real and complex Haemers bounds are elements in the quantum asymptotic spectrum of graphs. This is in contrast to the Haemers bounds defined over certain finite fields, which can be strictly smaller than the quantum Shannon capacity. Moreover, since the Haemers bound can be strictly smaller than the Lovász theta function (Haemers, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 1979), we find that the quantum Shannon capacity and the Lovász theta function do not coincide. As a consequence, two well-known conjectures in quantum information theory cannot both be true.

Relating broadcast independence and independence
Published • View Publication • BIB
An independent broadcast on a connected graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G)\to \mathbb{N}_0$ such that, for every vertex $x$ of $G$, the value $f(x)$ is at most the eccentricity of $x$ in $G$, and $f(x)>0$ implies that $f(y)=0$ for every vertex $y$ of $G$ within distance at most $f(x)$ from $x$. The broadcast independence number $α_b(G)$ of $G$ is the largest weight $\sum\limits_{x\in V(G)}f(x)$ of an independent broadcast $f$ on $G$. Clearly, $α_b(G)$ is at least the independence number $α(G)$ for every connected graph $G$. Our main result implies $α_b(G)\leq 4α(G)$. We prove a tight inequality and characterize all extremal graphs.

Girth, minimum degree, independence, and broadcast independence
It is known that $α(G)\leq α_b(G)\leq 4α(G)$ for every connected graph $G$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$. If $G$ has girth $g$ and minimum degree $δ$, we show that $α_b(G)\leq 2α(G)$ provided that $g\geq 6$ and $δ\geq 3$ or that $g\geq 4$ and $δ\geq 5$. Furthermore, we show that, for every positive integer $k$, there is a connected graph $G$ of girth at least $k$ and minimum degree at least $k$ such that $α_b(G)\geq 2\left(1-\frac{1}{k}\right)α(G)$. Our results imply that lower bounds on the girth and the minimum degree of a connected graph $G$ can lower the fraction $\frac{α_b(G)}{α(G)}$ from $4$ below $2$, but not any further.

Low independence number and Hamiltonicity implies pancyclicity
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph on $n$ vertices is called pancyclic if it contains a cycle of every length $3\le l \le n$. Given a Hamiltonian graph $G$ with independence number at most $k$ we are looking for the minimum number of vertices $f(k)$ that guarantees that $G$ is pancyclic. The problem of finding $f(k)$ was raised by Erdős in 1972 who showed that $f(k)\le 4k^4$, and conjectured that $f(k)=Θ(k^2)$. Improving on a result of Lee and Sudakov we show that $f(k)=O(k^{11/5})$.

Algorithmic aspects of broadcast independence
We describe an efficient algorithm that determines the broadcast independence number of a given tree. Furthermore, we show NP-hardness of the broadcast independence number for planar graphs of maximum degree four, and hardness of approximation for general graphs. Our results solve problems posed by Dunbar, Erwin, Haynes, Hedetniemi, and Hedetniemi (2006), Hedetniemi (2006), and Ahmane, Bouchemakh, Sopena (2018).

Domination Parameters of the Unitary Cayley Graph of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The unitary Cayley graph of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, denoted $X_n$, is the graph on $\{0,\dots,n-1\}$ where vertices $a$ and $b$ are adjacent if and only if $\gcd(a-b,n) = 1$. We answer a question of Defant and Iyer by constructing a family of infinitely many integers $n$ such that $γ_t(X_n) \leq g(n) - 2$, where $γ_t$ denotes the total domination number and $g$ denotes the Jacobsthal function. We determine the irredundance number, domination number, and lower independence number of certain direct products of complete graphs and give bounds for these parameters for any direct product of complete graphs. We provide upper bounds on the size of irredundant sets in direct products of balanced, complete multipartite graphs which are asymptotically correct for the unitary Cayley graphs of integers with a bounded smallest prime factor.

An inertial upper bound for the quantum independence number of a graph
A well known upper bound for the independence number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$, is that \[ α(G) \le n^0 + \min\{n^+ , n^-\}, \] where $(n^+, n^0, n^-)$ is the inertia of $G$. We prove that this bound is also an upper bound for the quantum independence number $α_q$(G), where $α_q(G) \ge α(G)$. We identify numerous graphs for which $α(G) = α_q(G)$ and demonstrate that there are graphs for which the above bound is not exact with any Hermitian weight matrix, for $α(G)$ and $α_q(G)$. This result complements results by the authors that many spectral lower bounds for the chromatic number are also lower bounds for the quantum chromatic number.
A Ramsey-type theorem for the matching number regarding connected graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A major line of research is discovering Ramsey-type theorems, which are results of the following form: given a graph parameter $ρ$, every graph $G$ with sufficiently large $ρ(G)$ contains a `well-structured' induced subgraph $H$ with large $ρ(H)$. The classical Ramsey's theorem deals with the case when the graph parameter under consideration is the number of vertices; there is also a Ramsey-type theorem regarding connected graphs. Given a graph $G$, the matching number and the induced matching number of $G$ is the maximum size of a matching and an induced matching, respectively, of $G$. In this paper, we formulate Ramsey-type theorems for the matching number and the induced matching number regarding connected graphs. Along the way, we obtain a Ramsey-type theorem for the independence number regarding connected graphs as well.
Neighbor-Locating Colorings in Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a $k$-partition $Π=\{S_1,\ldots,S_k\}$ of $V(G)$ into independent sets, called \emph{colors}. A $k$-coloring is called \emph{neighbor-locating} if for every pair of vertices $u,v$ belonging to the same color $S_i$, the set of colors of the neighborhood of $u$ is different from the set of colors of the neighborhood of $v$. The neighbor-locating chromatic number $χ_{_{NL}}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a neighbor-locating coloring of $G$. We establish some tight bounds for the neighbor-locating chromatic number of a graph, in terms of its order, maximum degree and independence number. We determine all connected graphs of order $n\geq 5$ with neighbor-locating chromatic number $n$ or $n-1$. We examine the neighbor-locating chromatic number for two graph operations: join and disjoint union, and also for two graph families: split graphs and Mycielski graphs.

On the maximum number of maximum independent sets in connected graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We characterize the connected graphs of given order $n$ and given independence number $α$ that maximize the number of maximum independent sets. For $3\leq α\leq n/2$, there is a unique such graph that arises from the disjoint union of $α$ cliques of orders $\left\lceil\frac{n}α\right\rceil$ and $\left\lfloor\frac{n}α\right\rfloor$, by selecting a vertex $x$ in a largest clique and adding an edge between $x$ and a vertex in each of the remaining $α-1$ cliques. Our result confirms a conjecture of Derikvand and Oboudi [On the number of maximum independent sets of graphs, Transactions on Combinatorics 3 (2014) 29-36].

Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture for graphs with forbidden holes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A hole in a graph is an induced cycle of length at least $4$. Let $s\ge2$ and $t\ge2$ be integers. A graph $G$ is $(s,t)$-splittable if $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $S$ and $T$ such that $χ(G[S ]) \ge s$ and $χ(G[T ]) \ge t$. The well-known Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture from 1968 states that every graph $G$ with $ω(G) < χ(G) = s + t - 1$ is $(s,t)$-splittable. This conjecture is hard, and few related results are known. However, it has been verified to be true for line graphs, quasi-line graphs, and graphs with independence number $2$. In this paper, we establish more evidence for the Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture by showing that every graph $G$ with $α(G)\ge3$, $ω(G) < χ(G) = s + t - 1$, and no hole of length between $4$ and $2α(G)-1$ is $(s,t)$-splittable, where $α(G)$ denotes the independence number of a graph $G$.

On the sum of $k$-th largest distance eigenvalues of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a connected graph $G$ with order $n$ and an integer $k\geq 1$, we denote by $$S_k(D(G))=λ_1(D(G))+\cdots+λ_k(D(G))$$ the sum of $k$ largest distance eigenvalues of $G$. In this paper, we consider the sharp upper bound and lower bound of $S_k(D(G))$. We determine the sharp lower bounds of $S_k(D(G))$ when $G$ is connected graph and is a tree, respectively, and characterize both the extremal graphs. Moreover, we conjecture that the upper bound is attained when $G$ is a path of order $n$ and prove some partial result supporting the conjecture. To prove our result, we obtain a sharp upper bound of $λ_2(D(G))$ in terms of the order and the diameter of $G$, where $λ_2(D(G))$ is the second largest distance eigenvalue of $G$. As applications, we prove a general inequality involving $λ_2(D(G))$, the independence number of $G$, and the number of triangles in $G$. An immediate corollary is a conjecture of Fajtlowicz, which was confirmed in \cite{L15-L} by a different argument. We conclude this paper with some open problems for further study.
Independence number of edge-chromatic critical graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ(G)$ and chromatic index $χ'(G)$. A classic result of Vizing indicates that either $χ'(G )=Δ(G)$ or $χ'(G )=Δ(G)+1$. The graph $G$ is called $Δ$-critical if $G$ is connected, $χ'(G )=Δ(G)+1$ and for any $e\in E(G)$, $χ'(G-e)=Δ(G)$. Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph. Vizing conjectured that $α(G)$, the independence number of $G$, is at most $\frac{n}{2}$. The current best result on this conjecture, shown by Woodall, is that $α(G)<\frac{3n}{5}$. We show that for any given $\varepsilon\in (0,1)$, there exist positive constants $d_0(\varepsilon)$ and $D_0(\varepsilon)$ such that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph with minimum degree at least $d_0$ and maximum degree at least $D_0$, then $α(G)<(\frac{1}{2}+\varepsilon)n$. In particular, we show that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph with minimum degree at least $d$ and $Δ(G)\ge (d+2)^{5d+10}$, then \[ α(G) < \left. \begin{cases} \frac{7n}{12}, & \text{if $d= 3$; } \frac{4n}{7}, & \text{if $d= 4$; } \frac{d+2+\sqrt[3]{(d-1)d}}{2d+4+\sqrt[3]{(d-1)d}}n<\frac{4n}{7}, & \text{if $d\ge 19$. } \end{cases} \right. \]
