The Number System of the Permutations Generated by Cyclic Shift
A number system coding for the permutations generated by cyclic shift is described. The system allows to find the rank of a permutation given how it has been generated, and to determine a permutation given its rank. It defines a code describing the symmetry properties of the set of permutations generated by cyclic shift. This code is conjectured to be a combinatorial Gray code listing the set of permutations: this corresponds to an Hamiltonian path of minimal weight in an appropriate regular digraph.
Token Graphs
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics 28.3:365-380, 2012 • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$ and integer $k\geq1$, we define the token graph $F_k(G)$ to be the graph with vertex set all $k$-subsets of $V(G)$, where two vertices are adjacent in $F_k(G)$ whenever their symmetric difference is a pair of adjacent vertices in $G$. Thus vertices of $F_k(G)$ correspond to configurations of $k$ indistinguishable tokens placed at distinct vertices of $G$, where two configurations are adjacent whenever one configuration can be reached from the other by moving one token along an edge from its current position to an unoccupied vertex. This paper introduces token graphs and studies some of their properties including: connectivity, diameter, cliques, chromatic number, Hamiltonian paths, and Cartesian products of token graphs.

Hamiltonian paths on the Sierpinski gasket
Published in J. Math. Phys. 52, 023301 (2011) • View Publication • BIB
We derive exactly the number of Hamiltonian paths H(n) on the two dimensional Sierpinski gasket SG(n) at stage $n$, whose asymptotic behavior is given by $\frac{\sqrt{3}(2\sqrt{3})^{3^{n-1}}}{3} \times (\frac{5^2 \times 7^2 \times 17^2}{2^{12} \times 3^5 \times 13})(16)^n$. We also obtain the number of Hamiltonian paths with one end at a certain outmost vertex of SG(n), with asymptotic behavior $\frac {\sqrt{3}(2\sqrt{3})^{3^{n-1}}}{3} \times (\frac {7 \times 17}{2^4 \times 3^3})4^n$. The distribution of Hamiltonian paths on SG(n) with one end at a certain outmost vertex and the other end at an arbitrary vertex of SG(n) is investigated. We rigorously prove that the exponent for the mean $\ell$ displacement between the two end vertices of such Hamiltonian paths on SG(n) is $\ell \log 2 / \log 3$ for $\ell>0$.

Enumeration of paths and cycles and e-coefficients of incomparability graphs
We prove that the number of Hamiltonian paths on the complement of an acyclic digraph is equal to the number of cycle covers. As an application, we obtain a new expansion of the chromatic symmetric function of incomparability graphs in terms of elementary symmetric functions. Analysis of some of the combinatorial implications of this expansion leads to three bijections involving acyclic orientations.
Enumerative properties of Ferrers graphs
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 32:481--492 (2004), volume in honour of LJ Billera • View Publication • BIB
We define a class of bipartite graphs that correspond naturally with Ferrers diagrams. We give expressions for the number of spanning trees, the number of Hamiltonian paths when applicable, the chromatic polynomial, and the chromatic symmetric function. We show that the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial is given by the excedance set statistic.

On uniquely k-determined permutations
There are several approaches to study occurrences of consecutive patterns in permutations such as the inclusion-exclusion method, the tree representations of permutations, the spectral approach and others. We propose yet another approach to study occurrences of consecutive patterns in permutations. The approach is based on considering the graph of patterns overlaps, which is a certain subgraph of the de Bruijn graph. While applying our approach, the notion of a uniquely $k$-determined permutation appears. We give two criteria for a permutation to be uniquely $k$-determined: one in terms of the distance between two consecutive elements in a permutation, and the other one in terms of directed hamiltonian paths in the certain graphs called path-schemes. Moreover, we describe a finite set of prohibitions that gives the set of uniquely $k$-determined permutations. Those prohibitions make applying the transfer matrix method possible for determining the number of uniquely $k$-determined permutations.

On Hamiltonicity of {claw, net}-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An st-path is a path with the end-vertices s and t. An s-path is a path with an end-vertex s. The results of this paper include necessary and sufficient conditions for a {claw, net}-free graph G with given two different vertices s, t and an edge e to have (1)a Hamiltonian s-path, (2) a Hamiltonian st-path, (3) a Hamiltonian s- and st-paths containing edge e when G has connectivity one, and (4) a Hamiltonian cycle containing e when G is 2-connected. These results imply that a connected {claw, net}-free graph has a Hamiltonian path and a 2-connected {claw, net}-free graph has a Hamiltonian cycle [D. Duffus, R.J. Gould, M.S. Jacobson, Forbidden Subgraphs and the Hamiltonian Theme, in The Theory and Application of Graphs (Kalamazoo, Mich., 1980$), Wiley, New York (1981) 297--316.] Our proofs of (1)-(4) are shorter than the proofs of their corollaries in [D. Duffus, R.J. Gould, M.S. Jacobson] and provide polynomial-time algorithms for solving the corresponding Hamiltonicity problems. Keywords: graph, claw, net, {claw, net}-free graph, Hamiltonian path, Hamiltonian cycle, polynomial-time algorithm.

Bijective Proofs for "Enumerative Properties of Ferrers Graphs"
Recently, Ehrenborg and Van Willenburg defined a class of bipartite graphs that correspond naturally to Ferrers diagrams, and proved several results about them. We give bijective proofs for the (already known) expressions for the number of spanning trees and (where applicable) Hamiltonian paths of these graphs. Their paper can be found at http://www.ms.uky.edu/~jrge/Papers/Ferrers_graphs.pdf .

Hamiltonian Paths in Cartesian Powers of Directed Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
The vertex set of the kth cartesian power of a directed cycle of length m can be naturally identified with the set of k-tuples of integers modulo m. For any two vertices v and w of this graph, it is easy to see that if there is a hamiltonian path from v to w, then the sum of the coordinates of v is congruent, modulo m, to one more than the sum of the coordinates of w. We prove the converse, unless k = 2 and m is odd.
