An edge-colored connected graph $G$ is properly connected if between every pair of distinct vertices, there exists a path that no two adjacent edges have a same color. Fujita (2019) introduced the optimal proper connection number ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ for a monochromatic connected graph $G$, to make a connected graph properly connected efficiently. More precisely, ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ is the smallest integer $p+q$ when one converts a given monochromatic graph $G$ into a properly connected graph by recoloring $p$ edges with $q$ colors.
In this paper, we show that ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ has an upper bound in terms of the independence number $α(G)$. Namely, we prove that for a connected graph $G$, ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)\le \frac{5α(G)-1}{2}$. Moreoevr, for the case $α(G)\leq 3$, we improve the upper bound to $4$, which is tight.

For a fixed graph $F$, the $\textit{anti-Ramsey number}$, $AR(n,F)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $K_n$ which does not contain a rainbow copy of $F$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of anti-Ramsey numbers of linear forests for sufficiently large $n$, and show the extremal edge-colored graphs. This answers a question of Fang, Győri, Lu and Xiao.

In the noisy channel model from coding theory, we wish to detect errors introduced during transmission by optimizing various parameters of the code. Bennett, Dudek, and LaForge framed a variation of this problem in the language of alternating paths in edge-colored complete bipartite graphs in 2016. Here, we extend this problem to the random graph $\mathbb{G}(n,p)$. We seek the alternating connectivity, $κ_{r,\ell}(G)$, which is the maximum $t$ such that there is an $r$-edge-coloring of $G$ such that any pair of vertices is connected by $t$ internally disjoint and alternating (i.e. no consecutive edges of the same color) paths of length $\ell$. We have three main results about how this parameter behaves in $\mathbb{G}(n,p)$ that basically cover all ranges of $p$: one for paths of length two, one for the dense case, and one for the sparse case. For paths of length two, we found that $κ_{r,\ell}(G)$ is essentially the codegree of a pair of vertices. For the dense case when $p$ is constant, we were able to achieve the natural upper bounds of minimum degree (minus some intersection) or the total number of disjoint paths between a pair of vertices. For the sparse case, we were able to find colorings that achieved the natural obstructions of minimum degree or (in a slightly less precise result) the total number of paths of a certain length in a graph. We broke up this sparse case into ranges of $p$ corresponding to when $\mathbb{G}(n,p)$ has diameter $k$ or $k+1$. We close with some remarks about a similar parameter and a generalization to pseudorandom graphs.

A path in an edge-colored graph is called a monochromatic path if all edges of the path have a same color. We call $k$ paths $P_1,\cdots,P_k$ rainbow monochromatic paths if every $P_i$ is monochromatic and for any two $i\neq j$, $P_i$ and $P_j$ have different colors. An edge-coloring of a graph $G$ is said to be a rainbow monochromatic $k$-edge-connection coloring (or $RMC_k$-coloring for short) if every two distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by at least $k$ rainbow monochromatic paths. We use $rmc_k(G)$ to denote the maximum number of colors that ensures $G$ has an $RMC_k$-coloring, and this number is called the rainbow monochromatic $k$-edge-connection number. We prove the existence of $RMC_k$-colorings of graphs, and then give some bounds of $rmc_k(G)$ and present some graphs whose $rmc_k(G)$ reaches the lower bound. We also obtain the threshold function for $rmc_k(G(n,p))\geq f(n)$, where $\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor> k\geq 1$.

The concept of rainbow disconnection number of graphs was introduced by Chartrand et al. in 2018. Inspired by this concept, we put forward the concepts of rainbow vertex-disconnection and proper disconnection in graphs. In this paper, we first show that it is $NP$-complete to decide whether a given edge-colored graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)=4$ is proper disconnected. Then, for a graph $G$ with $Δ(G)\leq 3$ we show that $pd(G)\leq 2$ and determine the graphs with $pd(G)=1$ and $2$, respectively. Furthermore, we show that for a general graph $G$, deciding whether $pd(G)=1$ is $NP$-complete, even if $G$ is bipartite. We also show that it is $NP$-complete to decide whether a given vertex-colored graph $G$ is rainbow vertex-disconnected, even though the graph $G$ has $Δ(G)=3$ or is bipartite.

We study a Turán-type problem on edge-colored complete graphs. We show that for any $r$ and $t$, any sufficiently large $r$-edge-colored complete graph on $n$ vertices with $Ω(n^{2-1/tr^r})$ edges in each color contains a member from certain finite family $\mathcal{F}_t^r$ of $r$-edge-colored complete graphs. We conjecture that $Ω(n^{2-1/t})$ edges in each color are sufficient to find a member from ${\mathcal{F}}_t^r$. A result of Girão and Narayanan confirms this conjecture when $r=2$.
Next, we study a related problem where the corresponding Turán threshold is linear. We call an edge-coloring of a path $P_{rk}$ balanced if each color appears $k$ times in the coloring. We show that any $3$-edge-coloring of a large complete graph with $kn+o(n)$ edges in each color contains a balanced $P_{3k}$. This is tight up to a constant factor of $2$. For more colors, the problem becomes surprisingly more delicate. Already for $r=7$, we show that even $n^{2-o(1)}$ edges from each color does not guarantee existence of a balanced $P_{7k}$.

Let $G = (V, E)$ be an $n$-vertex edge-colored graph. In 2013, H. Li proved that if every vertex $v \in V$ is incident to at least $(n+1)/2$ distinctly colored edges, then $G$ admits a rainbow triangle. We establish a corresponding result for fixed even rainbow $\ell$-cycles $C_{\ell}$: if every vertex $v \in V$ is incident to at least $(n+5)/3$ distinctly colored edges, where $n \geq n_0(\ell)$ is sufficiently large, then $G$ admits an even rainbow $\ell$-cycle $C_{\ell}$. This result is best possible whenever $\ell \not\equiv 0$ (mod 3). Correspondingly, we also show that for a fixed (even or odd) integer $\ell \geq 4$, every large $n$-vertex oriented graph $\vec{G} = (V, \vec{E})$ with minimum outdegree at least $(n+1)/3$ admits a (consistently) directed $\ell$-cycle $\vec{C}_{\ell}$. Our latter result relates to one of Kelly, Kühn, and Osthus, who proved a similar statement for oriented graphs with large semi-degree. Our proofs are based on the stability method.
Generalized rainbow Turán problems
Alon and Shikhelman initiated the systematic study of the following generalized Turán problem: for fixed graphs $H$ and $F$ and an integer $n$, what is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph?
An edge-colored graph is called rainbow if all its edges have different colors. The rainbow Turán number of $F$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with no rainbow copy of $F$. The study of rainbow Turán problems was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte.
Motivated by the above problems, we study the following problem: What is the maximum number of copies of $F$ in a properly edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices without a rainbow copy of $F$? We establish several results, including when $F$ is a path, cycle or tree.

Properly colored cycles in edge-colored graphs are closely related to directed cycles in oriented graphs. As an analogy of the well-known Caccetta-Häggkvist Conjecture, we study the existence of properly colored cycles of bounded length in an edge-colored graph. We first prove that for all integers $s$ and $t$ with $t\geq s\geq2$, every edge-colored graph $G$ with no properly colored $K_{s,t}$ contains a spanning subgraph $H$ which admits an orientation $D$ such that every directed cycle in $D$ is a properly colored cycle in $G$. Using this result, we show that for $r\geq4$, if the Caccetta-Häggkvist Conjecture holds , then every edge-colored graph of order $n$ with minimum color degree at least $n/r+2\sqrt{n}+1$ contains a properly colored cycle of length at most $r$. In addition, we also obtain an asymptotically tight total color degree condition which ensures a properly colored (or rainbow) $K_{s,t}$.

Let $G = (V, E)$ be an $n$-vertex edge-colored graph. In 2013, H. Li proved that if every vertex $v \in V$ is incident to at least $(n+1)/2$ distinctly colored edges, then $G$ admits a rainbow triangle. We prove that the same hypothesis ensures a rainbow $\ell$-cycle $C_{\ell}$ whenever $n \ge 432 \ell$. This result is sharp for all odd integers $\ell \geq 3$, and extends earlier work of the authors for when $\ell$ is even.

An alternating cycle in a 2-two-edge-colored graph is a cycle such that any two consecutive edges have different colors. Let $G_1, \ldots, G_k$ be a collection of pairwise vertex disjoint 2-edge-colored graphs. The colored generalized sum of $G_1, \ldots, G_k$, denoted by $ \oplus_{i=1}^k G_i$, is the set of all 2-edge-colored graphs $G$ such that: (i) $V(G)=\bigcup_{i=1}^k V(G_i)$, (ii) $G\langle V(G_i)\rangle\cong G_i$ for $i=1,\ldots, k$ as edge-colored graphs where $G\langle V(G_i)\rangle$ has the same coloring as $G_i$ and (iii) between each pair of vertices in different summands of $G$ there is exactly one edge, with an arbitrary but fixed color. A graph $G$ in $\oplus_{i=1}^k G_i$ will be called a colored generalized sum (c.g.s.) and we will say that $e\in E(G)$ is an exterior edge iff $e\in E(G)\setminus \left(\bigcup_{i=1}^k E(G_i)\right)$. The set of exterior edges will be denoted by $E_\oplus$. A colored graph $G$ is said to be a vertex alternating-pancyclic graph, whenever for each vertex $v$ in $G$, and for each $l\in\{3,\ldots, |V(G)|\}$, there exists in $G$ an alternating cycle of length $l$ passing through $v$.
The topics of pancyclism and vertex-pancyclism are deeply and widely studied by several authors. The existence of alternating cycles in 2-edge-colored graphs has been studied because of its many applications. In this paper, we give sufficient conditions for a graph $G\in \oplus_{i=1}^k G_i$ to be a vertex alternating-pancyclic graph.

A signed graph is a graph together with an assignment of signs to the edges. A closed walk in a signed graph is said to be positive (negative) if it has an even (odd) number of negative edges, counting repetition. Recognizing the signs of closed walks as one of the key structural properties of a signed graph, we define a homomorphism of a signed graph $(G,σ)$ to a signed graph $(H, π)$ to be a mapping of vertices and edges of $G$ to (respectively) vertices and edges of $H$ which preserves incidence, adjacency and the signs of closed walks.
In this work we first give a characterization of the sets of closed walks in a graph $G$ that correspond to the set of negative walks in some signed graph on $G$. We also give an easy algorithm for the corresponding decision problem.
After verifying the equivalence between this definition and earlier ones, we discuss the relation between homomorphisms of signed graphs and those of 2-edge-colored graphs. Next we provide some basic no-homomorphism lemmas. These lemmas lead to a general method of defining chromatic number which is discussed at length. Finally, we list a few problems that are the driving force behind the study of homomorphisms of signed graphs.

We call a subgraph of an edge-colored graph rainbow subgraph, if all of its edges have different colors. The anti-Ramsey number of a graph $G$ in a complete graph $K_{n}$, denoted by $ar(K_{n}, G)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $K_{n}$ with no rainbow subgraph copy of $G$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of the anti-Ramsey number for star forests and the approximate value of the anti-Ramsey number for linear forests. Furthermore, we compute the exact value of $ar(K_{n}, 2P_{4})$ for $n\ge 8$ and $ar(K_{n}, S_{p,q})$ for large $n$, where $S_{p,q}$ is the double star with $p+q$ leaves.

It is known that in any $r$-coloring of the edges of a complete $r$-uniform hypergraph, there exists a spanning monochromatic component. Given a Steiner triple system on $n$ vertices, what is the largest monochromatic component one can guarantee in an arbitrary 3-coloring of the edges?
Gyárfás proved that $(2n+3)/3$ is an absolute lower bound and that this lower bound is best possible for infinitely many $n$. On the other hand, we prove that for almost all Steiner triple systems the lower bound is actually $(1-o(1))n$. We obtain this result as a consequence of a more general theorem which shows that the lower bound depends on the size of a largest \emph{3-partite hole} (that is, sets $X_1, X_2, X_3$ with $|X_1|=|X_2|=|X_3|$ such that no edge intersects all of $X_1, X_2, X_3$) in the Steiner triple system (Gyárfás previously observed that the upper bound depends on this parameter). Furthermore, we show that this lower bound is tight unless the coloring has a particular structure.
We also suggest a variety of other Ramsey problems in the setting of Steiner triple systems.

A graph $G$ arrows a graph $H$ if in every $2$-edge-coloring of $G$ there exists a monochromatic copy of $H$. Schelp had the idea that if the complete graph $K_n$ arrows a small graph $H$, then every "dense" subgraph of $K_n$ also arrows $H$, and he outlined some problems in this direction. Our main result is in this spirit. We prove that for every sufficiently large $n$, if $n = 3t+r$ where $r \in \{0,1,2\}$ and $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with $δ(G) \ge (3n-1)/4$, then for every $2$-edge-coloring of $G$, either there are cycles of every length $\{3, 4, 5, \dots, 2t+r\}$ of the same color, or there are cycles of every even length $\{4, 6, 8, \dots, 2t+2\}$ of the same color.
Our result is tight in the sense that no longer cycles (of length $>2t+r$) can be guaranteed and the minimum degree condition cannot be reduced. It also implies the conjecture of Schelp that for every sufficiently large $n$, every $(3t-1)$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree larger than $3|V(G)|/4$ arrows the path $P_{2n}$ with $2n$ vertices. Moreover, it implies for sufficiently large $n$ the conjecture by Benevides, Łuczak, Scott, Skokan and White that for $n=3t+r$ where $r \in \{0,1,2\}$ and every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $δ(G) \ge 3n/4$, in each $2$-edge-coloring of $G$ there exists a monochromatic cycle of length at least $2t+r$.
Proper disconnection of graphs
For an edge-colored graph $G$, a set $F$ of edges of $G$ is called a \emph{proper cut} if $F$ is an edge-cut of $G$ and any pair of adjacent edges in $F$ are assigned by different colors. An edge-colored graph is \emph{proper disconnected} if for each pair of distinct vertices of $G$ there exists a proper edge-cut separating them. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{proper disconnection number} of $G$, denoted by $pd(G)$, is the minimum number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ proper disconnected. In this paper, we first give the exact values of the proper disconnection numbers for some special families of graphs. Next, we obtain a sharp upper bound of $pd(G)$ for a connected graph $G$ of order $n$, i.e, $pd(G)\leq \min\{ χ'(G)-1, \left \lceil \frac{n}{2} \right \rceil\}$. Finally, we show that for given integers $k$ and $n$, the minimum size of a connected graph $G$ of order $n$ with $pd(G)=k$ is $n-1$ for $k=1$ and $n+2k-4$ for $2\leq k\leq \lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil$.
Properly colored $C_{4}$'s in edge-colored graphs
When many colors appear in edge-colored graphs, it is only natural to expect rainbow subgraphs to appear. This anti-Ramsey problem has been studied thoroughly and yet there remain many gaps in the literature. Expanding upon classical and recent results forcing rainbow triangles to appear, we consider similar conditions which force the existence of a properly colored copy of $C_{4}$.
On characterizing the critical graphs for matching Ramsey numbers
Given simple graphs $H_{1},H_{2},\ldots,H_{c}$, the Ramsey number $r(H_{1},H_{2},\ldots,H_{c})$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that every edge-colored $K_{n}$ with $c$ colors contains a subgraph in color $i$ isomorphic to $H_{i}$ for some $i\in\{1,2,\ldots,c\}$. The critical graphs for $r(H_1,H_2,\ldots,H_c)$ are edge-colored complete graphs on $r(H_1,H_2,\ldots,H_c)-1$ vertices with $c$ colors which contain no subgraphs in color $i$ isomorphic to $H_{i}$ for any $i\in \{1,2,\ldots,c\}$. For $n_1\geq n_2\geq \ldots\geq n_c\geq 1$, Cockayne and Lorimer (The Ramsey number for stripes, {\it J.\ Austral.\ Math.\ Soc.} \textbf{19} (1975), 252--256.) showed that $r(n_{1}K_{2},n_{2}K_{2},\ldots,n_{c}K_{2})=n_{1}+1+ \sum\limits_{i=1}^c(n_{i}-1)$, in which $n_{i}K_{2}$ is a matching of size $n_{i}$. Using the Gallai-Edmonds Theorem, we characterized all the critical graphs for $r(n_{1}K_{2},n_{2}K_{2},\ldots,n_{c}K_{2})$, implying a new proof for this Ramsey number.
Monochromatic connected matchings in 2-edge-colored multipartite graphs
A matching $M$ in a graph $G$ is connected if all the edges of $M$ are in the same component of $G$. Following Łuczak, there have been many results using the existence of large connected matchings in cluster graphs with respect to regular partitions of large graphs to show the existence of long paths and other structures in these graphs. We prove exact
Ramsey-type bounds on the sizes of monochromatic connected matchings in $2$-edge-colored multipartite graphs. In addition, we prove a stability theorem for such matchings.
Long monochromatic paths and cycles in 2-edge-colored multipartite graphs
We solve four similar problems: For every fixed $s$ and large $n$, we describe all values of $n_1,\ldots,n_s$ such that for every $2$-edge-coloring of the complete $s$-partite graph $K_{n_1,\ldots,n_s}$ there exists a monochromatic (i) cycle $C_{2n}$ with $2n$ vertices, (ii) cycle $C_{\geq 2n}$ with at least $2n$ vertices, (iii) path $P_{2n}$ with $2n$ vertices, and (iv) path $P_{2n+1}$ with $2n+1$ vertices.
This implies a generalization for large $n$ of the conjecture by Gyárfás, Ruszinkó, Sárkőzy and Szemerédi that for every $2$-edge-coloring of the complete $3$-partite graph $K_{n,n,n}$ there is a monochromatic path $P_{2n+1}$. An important tool is our recent stability theorem on monochromatic connected matchings.
