Singularities and radical initial ideals

What kind of reduced monomial schemes can be obtained as a Gröbner degeneration of a smooth projective variety? Our conjectured answer is: only Stanley-Reisner schemes associated to acyclic Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. This would imply, in particular, that only curves of genus zero have such a degeneration. We prove this conjecture for degrevlex orders, for elliptic curves over real number fields, for boundaries of cross-polytopes, and for leafless graphs. We discuss consequences for rational and F-rational singularities of algebras with straightening laws.
Unlabeled sample compression schemes and corner peelings for ample and maximum classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We examine connections between combinatorial notions that arise in machine learning and topological notions in cubical/simplicial geometry. These connections enable to export results from geometry to machine learning. Our first main result is based on a geometric construction by Tracy Hall (2004) of a partial shelling of the cross-polytope which can not be extended. We use it to derive a maximum class of VC dimension 3 that has no corners. This refutes several previous works in machine learning from the past 11 years. In particular, it implies that all previous constructions of optimal unlabeled sample compression schemes for maximum classes are erroneous. On the positive side we present a new construction of an unlabeled sample compression scheme for maximum classes. We leave as open whether our unlabeled sample compression scheme extends to ample (a.k.a. lopsided or extremal) classes, which represent a natural and far-reaching generalization of maximum classes. Towards resolving this question, we provide a geometric characterization in terms of unique sink orientations of the 1-skeletons of associated cubical complexes.

Lattice points in algebraic cross-polytopes and simplices
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 60 (2018) 145-169 • View Publication • BIB
The number of lattice points $\left| tP \cap \mathbb{Z}^d \right|$, as a function of the real variable $t>1$ is studied, where $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ belongs to a special class of algebraic cross-polytopes and simplices. It is shown that the number of lattice points can be approximated by an explicitly given polynomial of $t$ depending only on $P$. The error term is related to a simultaneous Diophantine approximation problem for algebraic numbers, as in Schmidt's theorem. The main ingredients of the proof are a Poisson summation formula for general algebraic polytopes, and a representation of the Fourier transform of the characteristic function of an arbitrary simplex in the form of a complex line integral.
Proving Tucker's Lemma with a Volume Argument
Published • View Publication • BIB
Sperner's lemma is a statement about labeled triangulations of a simplex. McLennan and Tourky (2007) provided a novel proof of Sperner's Lemma by examining volumes of simplices in a triangulation under time-linear simplex-linear deformation. We adapt a similar argument to prove Tucker's Lemma on a triangulated cross-polytope $P$. The McLennan-Tourky technique does not directly apply because this deformation may distort the volume of $P$. We remedy this by inscribing $P$ in its dual polytope, triangulating it, and considering how the volumes of deformed simplices behave.

Zigzag structure of thin chamber complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Zigzags and generalized zigzags in thin chamber complexes are investigated, in particular, all zigzags in the Coxeter complexes are described. Using this description, we show that the lengths of all generalized zigzags in the simplex $α_{n}$, the cross-polytope $β_{n}$, the $24$-cell, the icosahedron and the $600$-cell are equal to the Coxeter numbers of $A_{n}$, $B_{n}=C_{n}$, $F_{4}$ and $H_{i}$, $i=3,4$, respectively. Also, we discuss the following problem: in which cases two faces in a thin chamber complex can be connected by a zigzag?

Generalized Tchebyshev triangulations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, Volume 137, January 2016, Pages 88-125 • View Publication • BIB
After fixing a triangulation $L$ of a $k$-dimensional simplex that has no new vertices on the boundary, we introduce a triangulation operation on all simplicial complexes that replaces every $k$-face with a copy of $L$, via a sequence of induced subdivisions. The operation may be performed in many ways, but we show that the face numbers of the subdivided complex depend only on the face numbers of the original complex, in a linear fashion. We use this linear map to define a sequence of polynomials generalizing the Tchebyshev polynomials of the first kind and show, that in many cases, but not all, the resulting polynomials have only real roots, located in the interval $(-1,1)$. Some analogous results are shown also for generalized Tchebyshev polynomials of the higher kind, defined using summing over links of all original faces of a given dimension in our generalized Tchebyshev triangulations. Generalized Tchebyshev triangulations of the boundary complex of a cross-polytope play a central role in our calculations, and for some of these we verify the validity of a generalized lower bound conjecture by the second author.

A poset view of the major index
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 62 (2015) 1-14 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the Major MacMahon map and show how this map interacts with the pyramid and bipyramid operators. When the Major MacMahon map is applied to the ab-index of a simplicial poset, it yields the q-analogue of n! times the h-polynomial of the poset. Applying the map to the Boolean algebra gives the distribution of the major index on the symmetric group, a seminal result due to MacMahon. Similarly, when applied to the cross-polytope we obtain the distribution of one of the major indexes on signed permutations due to Reiner.

Intersection cuts from multiple rows: a disjunctive programming approach
Published • View Publication • BIB
We address the issue of generating cutting planes for mixed integer programs from multiple rows of the simplex tableau with the tools of disjunctive programming. A cut from q rows of the simplex tableau is an intersection cuts from a q-dimensional parametric cross-polytope, which can also be viewed as a disjunctive cut from a 2q-term disjunction. We define the disjunctive hull of the q-row problem, describe its relation to the integer hull, and show how to generate its facets. For the case of binary basic variables, we derive cuts from the stronger disjunctions whose terms are equations. We give cut strengthening procedures using the integrality of the nonbasic variables for both the integer and the binary case. Finally, we discuss some computational experiments.

Centrally symmetric manifolds with few vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
A centrally symmetric $2d$-vertex combinatorial triangulation of the product of spheres $§^i\times§^{d-2-i}$ is constructed for all pairs of non-negative integers $i$ and $d$ with $0\leq i \leq d-2$. For the case of $i=d-2-i$, the existence of such a triangulation was conjectured by Sparla. The constructed complex admits a vertex-transitive action by a group of order $4d$. The crux of this construction is a definition of a certain full-dimensional subcomplex, $\B(i,d)$, of the boundary complex of the $d$-dimensional cross-polytope. This complex $\B(i,d)$ is a combinatorial manifold with boundary and its boundary provides a required triangulation of $§^i\times§^{d-i-2}$. Enumerative characteristics of $\B(i,d)$ and its boundary, and connections to another conjecture of Sparla are also discussed.

Asymptotic Distribution Of The Roots Of The Ehrhart Polynomial Of The Cross-Polytope
We use the method of steepest descents to study the root distribution of the Ehrhart polynomial of the $d$-dimensional cross-polytope, namely $\mathcal{L}_{d}$, as $d\rightarrow \infty$. We prove that the distribution function of the roots, approximately, as $d$ grows, by variation of argument of the generating function $\sum_{m\geq 0}\mathcal{L}_{d}(m)t^{m+x-1}=(1+t)^{d}(1-t)^{-d-1}t^{x-1}$, as $t$ varies appropriately on the segment of the imaginary line contained inside the unit disk.
Lattice width directions and Minkowski's 3^d-theorem
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 26(3), 1104-1107, 2012 • View Publication • BIB
We show that the number of lattice directions in which a d-dimensional convex body in R^d has minimum width is at most 3^d-1, with equality only for the regular cross-polytope. This is deduced from a sharpened version of the 3^d-theorem due to Hermann Minkowski (22 June 1864--12 January 1909), for which we provide two independent proofs.

Some combinatorial properties of flag simplicial pseudomanifolds and spheres
Published • View Publication • BIB
A simplicial complex $Δ$ is called flag if all minimal nonfaces of $Δ$ have at most two elements. The following are proved: First, if $Δ$ is a flag simplicial pseudomanifold of dimension $d-1$, then the graph of $Δ$ (i) is $(2d-2)$-vertex-connected and (ii) has a subgraph which is a subdivision of the graph of the $d$-dimensional cross-polytope. Second, the $h$-vector of a flag simplicial homology sphere $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$ is minimized when $Δ$ is the boundary complex of the $d$-dimensional cross-polytope.
