A tame vs. feral dichotomy for graph classes excluding an induced minor or induced topological minor
A minimal separator in a graph is an inclusion-minimal set of vertices that separates some fixed pair of nonadjacent vertices. A graph class is said to be tame if there exists a polynomial upper bound for the number of minimal separators of every graph in the class, and feral if it contains arbitrarily large graphs with exponentially many minimal separators. Building on recent works of Gartland and Lokshtanov [SODA 2023] and Gajarský, Jaffke, Lima, Novotná, Pilipczuk, Rzążewski, and Souza [arXiv, 2022], we show that every graph class defined by a single forbidden induced minor or induced topological minor is either tame or feral, and classify the two cases. This leads to new graph classes in which Maximum Weight Independent Set and many other problems are solvable in polynomial time. We complement the classification results with polynomial-time recognition algorithms for the maximal tame graph classes appearing in the obtained classifications.

Embedding Nearly Spanning Trees

The Erdős-Sós Conjecture states that every graph with average degree exceeding $k-1$ contains every tree with $k$ edges as a subgraph. We prove that there are $δ>0$ and $k_0\in\mathbb N$ such that the conjecture holds for every tree $T$ with $k \ge k_0$ edges and every graph $G$ with $|V(G)| \le (1+δ)|V(T)|$.

Generalized Ramsey numbers of cycles, paths, and hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ and a set of $k$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}$, the generalized Ramsey number $f(G,\mathcal{H},q)$ is the minimum number of colors needed to edge-color $G$ so that every copy of every hypergraph $H\in \mathcal{H}$ in $G$ receives at least $q$ different colors. In this note we obtain bounds, some asymptotically sharp, on several generalized Ramsey numbers, when $G=K_n$ or $G=K_{n,n}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of cycles or paths, and when $G=K_n^k$ and $\mathcal{H}$ contains a clique on $k+2$ vertices or a tight cycle.

Unimodular polytopes and column number bounds on polytopal totally unimodular matrices via Seymour's decomposition theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a sharp upper bound on the number of distinct columns of a totally unimodular matrix with column sums $1$ improving upon Heller's classical bound. The proof uses Seymour's decomposition theorem. Such matrices are closely related to unimodular polytopes: lattice polytopes where the vertices of every full-dimensional subsimplex form an affine lattice basis. This is an interesting subclass of 0/1-polytopes and contains for instance edge polytopes of bipartite graphs. Our main result on totally unimodular matrices implies a sharp upper bound on the number of vertices of unimodular polytopes.
Counting the number of inequivalent arithmetic expressions on $n$ variables
Published in Filomat 39 (2025) 949-962 • View Publication • BIB
An expression is any mathematical formula that contains certain formal variables and operations to be executed in a specified order. In computer science, it is usually convenient to represent each expression in the form of an expression tree. Here, we consider only arithmetic expressions, i.e., those that contain only the four standard arithmetic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, alongside additive inversion. We first provide certain theoretical results concerning the equivalence of such expressions and then disclose a $Θ(n^2)$ algorithm that computes the number of inequivalent arithmetic expressions on $n$ distinct variables.

Almost Bipartite non-König-Egerváry Graphs Revisited
Let $α(G)$ denote the cardinality of a maximum independent set, while $μ(G)$ be the size of a maximum matching in $G=\left( V,E\right) $. It is known that if $α(G)+μ(G)=\left\vert V\right\vert $, then $G$ is a König-Egerváry graph. The critical difference $d(G)$ is $\max\{d(I):I\in\mathrm{Ind}(G)\}$, where $\mathrm{Ind}(G)$\ denotes the family of all independent sets of $G$. If $A\in\mathrm{Ind}(G)$ with $d\left( X\right) =d(G)$, then $A$ is a critical independent set. For a graph $G$, let $\mathrm{diadem}(G)=\bigcup\{S:S$ is a critical independent set in $G\}$, and $\varrho_{v}\left( G\right) $ denote the number of vertices $v\in V\left( G\right) $, such that $G-v$ is a König-Egerváry graph. A graph is called almost bipartite if it has a unique odd cycle. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is an almost bipartite non-König-Egerváry graph with the unique odd cycle $C$, then the following assertions are true: 1. every maximum matching of $G$ contains $\left\lfloor {V(C)}/{2}\right\rfloor $ edges belonging to $C$; 2. $V(C)\cup N_{G}\left[ \mathrm{diadem}\left( G\right) \right] =V$ and $V(C)\cap N_{G}\left[ \mathrm{diadem}\left( G\right) \right] =\emptyset$; 3. $\varrho_{v}\left( G\right) =\left\vert \mathrm{corona}\left( G\right) \right\vert -\left\vert \mathrm{diadem}\left( G\right) \right\vert $, where $\mathrm{corona}\left( G\right) $ is the union of all maximum independent sets of $G$; 4. $\varrho_{v}\left( G\right) =\left\vert V\right\vert $ if and only if $G=C_{2k+1}$ for some integer $k\geq1$.

An answer to Goswami's question and new sources of $IP^{\star}$-sets containing combined zigzag structure
Published • View Publication • BIB
$A$ set is called $IP$-set in a semigroup $\left(S,\cdot \right)$ if it contains finite products of a sequence. A set that intersects with all $IP$-sets is called $IP^\star$-set. It is a well known and established result by Bergelson and Hindman that if $A$ is an $IP^{\star}$-set, then for any sequence $\langle x_{n}\rangle_{n=1}^{\infty}$, there exists a sum subsystem $\langle y_{n}\rangle_{n=1}^{\infty}$ such that $FS\left(\langle y_{n}\rangle_{n=1}^{\infty}\right)\cup FP\left(\langle y_{n}\rangle_{n=1}^{\infty}\right)\subset A$. In \cite[Question 3]{G}, S. Goswami posed the question: if we replace the single sequence by $l$-sequences, then is it possible to obtain a sum subsystem such that all of its zigzag finite sums and products will be in $A$. Goswami has given affirmative answers only for dynamical $IP^{\star}$-sets which are not equivalent to those of $IP^{\star}$-sets, but are rather significantly stronger. In this article, we will give the answer to Goswami's question that was unknown until now.

A Generalization of Varnavides's Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
A linear equation $E$ is said to be sparse if there is $c>0$ so that every subset of $[n]$ of size $n^{1-c}$ contains a solution of $E$ in distinct integers. The problem of characterizing the sparse equations, first raised by Ruzsa in the 90's, is one of the most important open problems in additive combinatorics. We say that $E$ in $k$ variables is abundant if every subset of $[n]$ of size $\varepsilon n$ contains at least poly$(\varepsilon)\cdot n^{k-1}$ solutions of $E$. It is clear that every abundant $E$ is sparse, and Girão, Hurley, Illingworth and Michel asked if the converse implication also holds. In this note we show that this is the case for every $E$ in $4$ variables. We further discuss a generalization of this problem which applies to all linear equations.

Total coloring of regular graphs of girth = degree + 1
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $2\le k\in\mathbb{Z}$. A total coloring of a $k$-regular simple graph via $k+1$ colors is an {\it efficient total coloring} if each color yields an efficient dominating set, where the efficient domination condition applies to the restriction of each color class to the vertex set. In this work, focus is set upon graphs of girth $k+1$. Efficient total colorings of finite connected simple cubic graphs of girth 4 are constructed starting at the 3-cube. It is conjectured that all of them are obtained by means of four basic operations. In contrast, the Robertson 19-vertex $(4,5)$-cage, the alternate union $Pet^k$ of a (Hamilton) $10k$-cycle with $k$ pentagon and $k$-pentagram $5$-cycles, for $k>1$ not divisible by 5, and its double cover $Dod^k$, contain TCs that are nonefficient. Applications to partitions into 3-paths and 3-stars are given.

On treewidth and maximum cliques
Published in Innovations in Graph Theory, Volume 2 (2025), pp. 223-243 • View Publication • BIB
We construct classes of graphs that are variants of the so-called layered wheel. One of their key properties is that while the treewidth is bounded by a function of the clique number, the construction can be adjusted to make the dependance grow arbitrarily. Some of these classes provide counter-examples to several conjectures. In particular, the construction includes hereditary classes of graphs whose treewidth is bounded by a function of the clique number while the tree-independence number is unbounded, thus disproving a conjecture of Dallard, Milanič and Štorgel [Treewidth versus clique number. II. Tree-independence number. Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 164:404-442, 2024.]. The construction can be further adjusted to provide, for any fixed integer $c$, graphs of arbitrarily large treewidth that contain no $K_c$-free graphs of high treewidth, thus disproving a conjecture of Hajebi [Chordal graphs, even-hole-free graphs and sparse obstructions to bounded treewidth, arXiv:2401.01299, 2024].

Monocromaticity of additive and multiplicative central sets and Goswami's theorem in large Integral Domains
In \cite{Fi} A. Fish proved that if $E_{1}$ and $E_{2}$ are two subsets of $\mathbb{Z}$ of positive upper Banach density, then there exists $k\in\mathbb{Z}\setminus{0}$ such that $k\cdot\mathbb{Z}\subset\left(E_{1}-E_{1}\right)\cdot\left(E_{2}-E_{2}\right)$. In \cite{G}, S. Goswami proved the same but a fundamental result on the set of prime numbers $\mathbb{P}$ in $\mathbb{N}$ and proved that for some $k\in\mathbb{N}$, $k\cdot\mathbb{N}\subset\left(\mathbb{P}-\mathbb{P}\right)\cdot\left(\mathbb{P}-\mathbb{P}\right)$. To do so, Goswami mainly proved that the product of an $IP^{\star}$-set with an $IP_{r}^{\star}$-set contains $k\mathbb{N}$. This result is very important and surprising to mathematicians who are aware of combinatorially rich sets. In this article, we extend Goswami's result to large Lntegral Domain, that behave like $\mathbb{N}$ in the sense of some combinatorics. We prove that for a combinatorially rich ($CR$-set) set, $A$, for some $k\in\mathbb{N}$, $k\cdot\mathbb{N}\subset\left(A-A\right)\cdot\left(A-A\right)$. We provide a new proof that if we partition a large Integral Domain, $R$, into finitely many cells, then at least one cell is both additive and multiplicative central, and we prove the converse part, which is a new and unknown result.

The largest subgraph without a forbidden induced subgraph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We initiate the systematic study of the following Turán-type question. Suppose $Γ$ is a graph with $n$ vertices such that the edge density between any pair of subsets of vertices of size at least $t$ is at most $1 - c$, for some $t$ and $c > 0$. What is the largest number of edges in a subgraph $G \subseteq Γ$ which does not contain a fixed graph $H$ as an induced subgraph or, more generally, which belongs to a hereditary property $\mathcal{P}$? This provides a common generalization of two recently studied cases, namely $Γ$ being a (pseudo-)random graph and a graph without a large complete bipartite subgraph. We focus on the interesting case where $H$ is a bipartite graph. We determine the answer up to a constant factor with respect to $n$ and $t$, for certain bipartite $H$ and for $Γ$ either a dense random graph or a Paley graph with a square number of vertices. In particular, our bounds match if $H$ is a tree, or if one part of $H$ has $d$ vertices complete to the other part, all other vertices in that part have degree at most $d$, and the other part has sufficiently many vertices. As applications of the latter result, we answer a question of Alon, Krivelevich, and Samotij on the largest subgraph with a hereditary property which misses a bipartite graph, and determine up to a constant factor the largest number of edges in a string subgraph of $Γ$. The proofs are based on a variant of the dependent random choice and a novel approach for finding induced copies by inductively defining probability distributions supported on induced copies of smaller subgraphs.

Excluding disjoint Kuratowski graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is a ``$k$-Kuratowski graph'' if it has exactly $k$ components, each isomorphic to $K_5$ or to $K_{3,3}$. We prove that if a graph $G$ contains no $k$-Kuratowski graph as a minor, then there is a set $X$ of boundedly many vertices such that $G\setminus X$ can be drawn in a (possibly disconnected) surface in which no $k$-Kuratowski graph can be drawn.

Excluding a clique or a biclique in graphs of bounded induced matching treewidth
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a tree decomposition $\mathcal{T}$ of a graph $G$, let $μ(\mathcal{T})$ denote the maximum size of an induced matching in $G$ with the property that some bag of $\mathcal{T}$ contains at least one endpoint of every edge of the matching. The induced matching treewidth of a graph $G$ is the minimum value of $μ(\mathcal{T})$ over all tree decompositions $\mathcal{T}$ of $G$. Classes of graphs with bounded induced matching treewidth admit polynomial-time algorithms for a number of problems, including INDEPENDENT SET, $k$-COLORING, ODD CYCLE TRANSVERSAL, and FEEDBACK VERTEX SET. In this paper, we focus on combinatorial properties of such classes. First, we show that graphs with bounded induced matching treewidth that exclude a fixed biclique as an induced subgraph have bounded tree-independence number, which is another well-studied parameter defined in terms of tree decompositions. This sufficient condition about excluding a biclique is also necessary, as bicliques have unbounded tree-independence number. Second, we show that graphs with bounded induced matching treewidth that exclude a fixed clique have bounded chromatic number, that is, classes of graphs with bounded induced matching treewidth are $χ$-bounded. The two results confirm two conjectures due to Lima et al. [ESA 2024].

Spectral conditions for the existence of chorded cycles in graphs with fixed size
A chorded cycle is a cycle with at least one chord. Gould asked in [Graphs Comb. 38 (2022) 189] the question: What spectral conditions imply a graph contains a chorded cycle? For a graph with fixed size, extremal spectral conditions are given to ensure that a graph contains a chorded cycle and a $(2k-3)$-chorded $(2k+1)$-cycle for $k\ge 2$, respectively, via spectral radius.

Monochromatic non-commuting products
We show that a finite coloring of an amenable group contains `many' monochromatic sets of the form $\{x,y,xy,yx\},$ and natural extensions with more variables. This gives the first combinatorial proof and extensions of Bergelson and McCutcheon's non-commutative Schur theorem. Our main new tool is the introduction of what we call `quasirandom colorings,' a condition that is automatically satisfied by colorings of quasirandom groups, and a reduction to this case.
