On the finite geometry of $W(23,16)$
We study the local geometry of the zero pattern of a weighing matrix $W(23,16)$. The geometry consists of $23$ lines and $23$ points where each line contains $7$ points. The incidence rules are that every two lines intersect in an odd number of points, and the dual statement holds as well. We show that more than $50\%$ of the pairs of lines must intersect at a single point, and construct a regular weighted graph out of this geometry. This might indicate that a weighing matrix $W(23,16)$ does not exist.
On interference among moving sensors and related problems
We show that for any set of $n$ points moving along "simple" trajectories (i.e., each coordinate is described with a polynomial of bounded degree) in $\Re^d$ and any parameter $2 \le k \le n$, one can select a fixed non-empty subset of the points of size $O(k \log k)$, such that the Voronoi diagram of this subset is "balanced" at any given time (i.e., it contains $O(n/k)$ points per cell). We also show that the bound $O(k \log k)$ is near optimal even for the one dimensional case in which points move linearly in time. As applications, we show that one can assign communication radii to the sensors of a network of $n$ moving sensors so that at any given time their interference is $O(\sqrt{n\log n})$. We also show some results in kinetic approximate range counting and kinetic discrepancy. In order to obtain these results, we extend well-known results from $\varepsilon$-net theory to kinetic environments.
Designs from Paley graphs and Peisert graphs
Fix positive integers $p,q,$ and $r$ so that $p$ is prime, $q=p^r$, and $q\equiv 1$ (mod $4$). Fix a graph $G$ as follows: If $r$ is odd or $p\not\equiv 3$ (mod $4$), let $G$ be the $q$-vertex Paley graph; if $r$ is even and $p\equiv 3$ (mod $4$), let $G$ be either the $q$-vertex Paley graph or the $q$-vertex Peisert graph. We use the subgraph structure of $G$ to construct four sequences of $2$-designs, and we compute their parameters. Letting $k_4$ denote the number of $4$-vertex cliques in $G$, we create $62$ additional sequences of $2$-designs from $G$, and show how to express their parameters in terms of only $q$ and $k_4$. We find estimates and precise asymptotics for $k_4$ in the case that $G$ is a Paley graph. We also explain how the presented techniques can be used to find many additional $2$-designs in $G$. All constructed designs contain no repeated blocks.

Let $Δ_s=R(K_3,K_s)-R(K_3,K_{s-1})$, where $R(G,H)$ is the Ramsey number of graphs $G$ and $H$ defined as the smallest $n$ such that any edge coloring of $K_n$ with two colors contains $G$ in the first color or $H$ in the second color. In 1980, Erdős and Sós posed some questions about the growth of $Δ_s$. The best known concrete bounds on $Δ_s$ are $3 \le Δ_s \le s$, and they have not improved since the stating of the problem. In this paper we present some constructions, which imply in particular that $R(K_3,K_s) \ge R(K_3,K_{s-1}-e) + 4$. This does not improve the lower bound of 3 on $Δ_s$, but we still consider it a step towards to understanding its growth. We discuss some related questions and state two conjectures involving $Δ_s$, including the following: for some constant $d$ and all $s$ it holds that $Δ_s - Δ_{s+1} \leq d$. We also prove that if the latter is true, then $\lim_{s \rightarrow \infty} Δ_s/s=0$.

This note presents a new spectral version of the graph Zarankiewicz problem: How large can be the maximum eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian of a graph of order $n$ that does not contain a specified complete bipartite subgraph. A conjecture is stated about general complete bipartite graphs, which is proved for infinitely many cases.
More precisely, it is shown that if $G$ is a graph of order $n,$ with no subgraph isomorphic to $K_{2,s+1},$ then the largest eigenvalue $q(G)$ of the signless Laplacian of $G$ satisfies \[ q(G)\leq\frac{n+2s}{2}+\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{(n-2s)^{2}+8s}, \] with equality holding if and only if $G$ is a join of $K_{1}$ and an $s$-regular graph of order $n-1.$

In this paper we give a proof that the largest set of perfect matchings, in which any two contain a common edge, is the set of all perfect matchings that contain a fixed edge. This is a version of the famous Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for perfect matchings. The proof given in this paper is algebraic, we first determine the least eigenvalue of the perfect matching derangement graph and use properties of the perfect matching polytope. We also prove that the perfect matching derangement graph is not a Cayley graph.

We describe a new type of sufficient condition for a balanced bipartite digraph to be hamiltonian. Let $D$ be a balanced bipartite digraph and $x,y$ be distinct vertices in $D$. $\{x, y\}$ dominates a vertex $z$ if $x\rightarrow z$ and $y\rightarrow z$; in this case, we call the pair $\{x, y\}$ dominating. In this paper, we prove that a strong balanced bipartite digraph $D$ on $2a$ vertices contains a hamiltonian cycle if, for every dominating pair of vertices $\{x, y\}$, either $d(x)\ge 2a-1$ and $d(y)\ge a+1$ or $d(x)\ge a+1$ and $d(y)\ge 2a-1$. The lower bound in the result is sharp.
Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorems for a Family of Trees

Given a graph $G$ and an integer $r\geq 1$, let $\mathcal{I}^{(r)}(G)$ denote the family of independent sets of size $r$ of $G$. For a vertex $v$ of $G$, let $\mathcal{I}^{(r)}_v(G)$ denote the family of independent sets of size $r$ that contain~$v$. This family is called an $r$-star and $v$ is the centre of the star. Then $G$ is said to be $r$-EKR if no pairwise intersecting subfamily of $\mathcal{I}^{(r)}(G)$ is bigger than the largest $r$-star, and if every maximum size pairwise intersecting subfamily of $\mathcal{I}^{(r)}(G)$ is an $r$-star, then $G$ is said to be strictly $r$-EKR. Let $μ(G)$ denote the minimum size of a maximal independent set of $G$. Holroyd and Talbot conjectured that if $2r \leq μ(G)$, then $G$ is $r$-EKR and strictly $r$-EKR if $2r < μ(G)$.
An elongated claw is a tree in which one vertex is designated the root and no vertex other than the root has degree greater than 2. A depth-two claw is an elongated claw in which every vertex of degree~1 is at distance 2 from the root. We show that if $G$ is a depth-two claw, then $G$ is strictly $r$-EKR if $2r \leq μ(G)+1$, confirming the conjecture of Holroyd and Talbot for this family. We also show that if $G $ is an elongated claw with $n$ leaves and at least one leaf adjacent to the root, then $G$ is $r$-EKR if $2r \leq n$.
Hurlbert and Kamat had conjectured that one can always find a largest $r$-star of a tree whose centre is a leaf. Baber and Borg have separately shown this to be false. We show that, moreover, for all $n \geq 2$, $d \geq 3$, there exists a positive integer $r$ such that there is a tree where the centre of the largest $r$-star is a vertex of degree $n$ at distance at least $d$ from every leaf.
Lubell mass and induced partially ordered sets
We prove that for every partially ordered set $P$, there exists $c(P)$ such that every family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of $[n]$ ordered by inclusion and which contains no induced copy of $P$ satisfies $\sum_{F\in \mathcal{F}}1/{n\choose |F|}\leq c(P)$. This confirms a conjecture of Lu and Milans.

We derive an explicit sum formula for symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Our expression contains multiple sums over the symmetric group and uses the action of Hecke generators on the ring of polynomials. In the special cases $t=1$ and $q=0$, we recover known expressions for the monomial symmetric and Hall-Littlewood polynomials, respectively. Other specializations of our formula give new expressions for the Jack and $q$-Whittaker polynomials.

In this paper we consider the uniformly resolvable decompositions of the complete graph $2K_v$ into subgraphs where each resolution class contains only blocks isomorphic to the same graph. We completely determine the spectrum for the cases in which all the resolution classes are either $C_4$ or $K_{1,3}$.
Bias and dessins
Grothendieck's theory of dessins provides a bridge between algebraic numbers and combinatorics. This paper adds a new concept, called 'bias', to the bridge. This produces: (i) from a biased plane tree the construction of a sequence of algebraic numbers, and (ii) a Galois invariant lattice structure on the set of biased dessins. Bias brings these benefits by (i) using individual polynomials instead of equivalence classes of polynomials, and (ii) applying properties of covering spaces and the fundamental group. The new features give new opportunities.
At the 2014 SIGMAP conference the author spoke [1] on 'The decorated lattice of biased dessins'. This decorated lattice $\mathcal{L}$ is combinatorially defined, and its automorphism group contains the absolute Galois group $Γ$, perhaps as an index 6 subgroup.
This paper defines new families of invariants of dessins, although they require further work to be understood and useful. For this, $\mathcal{L}$ is vital. This paper relies on the the existing, unbiased, theory. Also, it only sketches the construction of $\mathcal{L}$. In [2], [3] the author will remove this dependency, develop the biased theory further, with a focus on $Γ$, and make the theory more accessible.
Alliance polynomial of regular graphs

The alliance polynomial of a graph $G$ with order $n$ and maximum degree $Δ$ is the polynomial $A(G; x) = \sum_{k=-Δ}^Δ A_{k}(G) \, x^{n+k}$, where $A_{k}(G)$ is the number of exact defensive $k$-alliances in $G$. We obtain some properties of $A(G; x)$ and its coefficients for regular graphs. In particular, we characterize the degree of regular graphs by the number of non-zero coefficients of their alliance polynomial. Besides, we prove that the family of alliance polynomials of $Δ$-regular graphs with small degree is a very special one, since it does not contain alliance polynomials of graphs which are not $Δ$-regular. By using this last result and direct computation we find that the alliance polynomial determines uniquely each cubic graph of order less than or equal to $10$.
Complexity of a Disjoint Matching Problem on Bipartite Graphs

We consider the following question: given an $(X,Y)$-bigraph $G$ and a set $S \subset X$, does $G$ contain two disjoint matchings $M_1$ and $M_2$ such that $M_1$ saturates $X$ and $M_2$ saturates $S$? When $|S|\geq |X|-1$, this question is solvable by finding an appropriate factor of the graph. In contrast, we show that when $S$ is allowed to be an arbitrary subset of $X$, the problem is NP-hard.
Simultaneous Embedding: Edge Orderings, Relative Positions, Cutvertices
A simultaneous embedding (with fixed edges) of two graphs $G^1$ and $G^2$ with common graph $G=G^1 \cap G^2$ is a pair of planar drawings of $G^1$ and $G^2$ that coincide on $G$. It is an open question whether there is a polynomial-time algorithm that decides whether two graphs admit a simultaneous embedding (problem SEFE).
In this paper, we present two results. First, a set of three linear-time preprocessing algorithms that remove certain substructures from a given SEFE instance, producing a set of equivalent SEFE instances without such substructures. The structures we can remove are (1) cutvertices of the union graph $G^\cup = G^1 \cup G^2$, (2) most separating pairs of $G^\cup$, and (3) connected components of $G$ that are biconnected but not a cycle.
Second, we give an $O(n^3)$-time algorithm solving SEFE for instances with the following restriction. Let $u$ be a pole of a P-node $μ$ in the SPQR-tree of a block of $G^1$ or $G^2$. Then at most three virtual edges of $μ$ may contain common edges incident to $u$. All algorithms extend to the sunflower case, i.e., to the case of more than three graphs pairwise intersecting in the same common graph.
A Coloring Algorithm for $4K_1$-free line graphs
Let $L$ be a set of graphs. $Free$($L$) is the set of graphs that do not contain any graph in $L$ as an induced subgraph. It is known that if $L$ is a set of four-vertex graphs, then the complexity of the coloring problem for $Free$($L$) is known with three exceptions: $L $= {claw, $4K_1$}, $L$ = {claw, $4K_1$, co-diamond}, and $L$ = {$C_4$, $4K_1$}. In this paper, we study the coloring problem for $Free$(claw, $4K_1$). We solve the coloring problem for a subclass of $Free$(claw, $4K_1$) which contains the class of $4K_1$-free line graphs. Our result implies the chromatic index of a graph with no matching of size four can be computed in polynomial time.
A Characterization of class groups via sets of lengths {II}

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with finite class group $G$ and suppose that every class contains a prime divisor. If an element $a \in H$ has a factorization $a=u_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot u_k$ into irreducible elements $u_1, \ldots, u_k \in H$, then $k$ is called the length of the factorization and the set $\mathsf L (a)$ of all possible factorization lengths is the set of lengths of $a$. It is classical that the system $\mathcal L (H) = \{ \mathsf L (a) \mid a \in H \}$ of all sets of lengths depends only on the class group $G$, and a standing conjecture states that conversely the system $\mathcal L (H)$ is characteristic for the class group. We verify the conjecture if the class group is isomorphic to $C_n^r$ with $r,n \ge 2$ and $r \le \max \{2, (n+2)/6\}$. Indeed, let $H'$ be a further Krull monoid with class group $G'$ such that every class contains a prime divisor and suppose that $\mathcal L (H)= \mathcal L (H')$. We prove that, if one of the groups $G$ and $G'$ is isomorphic to $C_n^r$ with $r,n$ as above, then $G$ and $G'$ are isomorphic (apart from two well-known pairings).
Root subsystems of rank 2 hyperbolic root systems
Let $Δ$ be a rank 2 hyperbolic root system. Then $Δ$ has generalized Cartan matrix $H(a,b)= \left(\begin{smallmatrix} ~2 & -b\\ -a & ~2 \end{smallmatrix}\right)$ indexed by $a,b\in\mathbb{Z}$ with $ab\geq 5$. If $a\neq b$, then $Δ$ is non-symmetric and is generated by one long simple root and one short simple root; whereas if $a= b$, $Δ$ is symmetric and is generated by two long simple roots. We prove that if $a\neq b$, then $Δ$ contains an infinite family of symmetric rank 2 hyperbolic root subsystems $H(k,k)$ for certain $k\geq 3$, generated by either two short or two long simple roots. We also prove that $Δ$ contains non-symmetric rank 2 hyperbolic root subsystems $H(a',b')$, for certain $a',b'\in\mathbb{Z}$ with $a'b'\geq 5$. One of our tools is a characterization of the types of root subsystems that are generated by a subset of roots. We classify these types of subsystems in rank 2 hyperbolic root systems.

In this paper, several new classes of Boolean functions with few Walsh transform values, including bent, semi-bent and five-valued functions, are obtained by adding the product of two or three linear functions to some known bent functions.Numerical results show that the proposed class contains cubic bent functions that are affinely inequivalent to all known quadratic ones. Meanwhile, we determine the distribution of the Walsh spectrum of five-valued functions constructed in this paper.

An oriented hypergraph is a hypergraph where each vertex-edge incidence is given a label of $+1$ or $-1$. We define the adjacency, incidence and Laplacian matrices of an oriented hypergraph and study each of them. We extend several matrix results known for graphs and signed graphs to oriented hypergraphs. New matrix results that are not direct generalizations are also presented. Finally, we study a new family of matrices that contains walk information.
