In this note we give a short proof that graphs having no linearly small Følner sets can be partitioned into a union of expanders. We use this fact to prove a partition result for graphs admitting linearly small maximal Følner sets and we deduce that a family of such graphs must contain a family of expanders. We also show that the existence of partitions into expanders is a quasi-isometry invariant.

A {\em theta} is a graph made of three internally vertex-disjoint chordless paths $P_1 = a \dots b$, $P_2 = a \dots b$, $P_3 = a \dots b$ of length at least~2 and such that no edges exist between the paths except the three edges incident to $a$ and the three edges incident to $b$. A {\em pyramid} is a graph made of three chordless paths $P_1 = a \dots b_1$, $P_2 = a \dots b_2$, $P_3 = a \dots b_3$ of length at least~1, two of which have length at least 2, vertex-disjoint except at $a$, and such that $b_1b_2b_3$ is a triangle and no edges exist between the paths except those of the triangle and the three edges incident to~$a$. An \emph{even hole} is a chordless cycle of even length. For three non-negative integers $i\leq j\leq k$, let $S_{i,j,k}$ be the tree with a vertex $v$, from which start three paths with $i$, $j$, and $k$ edges respectively. We denote by $K_t$ the complete graph on $t$ vertices.
We prove that for all non-negative integers $i, j, k$, the class of graphs that contain no theta, no $K_3$, and no $S_{i, j, k}$ as induced subgraphs have bounded treewidth. We prove that for all non-negative integers $i, j, k, t$, the class of graphs that contain no even hole, no pyramid, no $K_t$, and no $S_{i, j, k}$ as induced subgraphs have bounded treewidth. To bound the treewidth, we prove that every graph of large treewidth must contain a large clique or a minimal separator of large cardinality.
An Approximation Algorithm for Fully Planar Edge-Disjoint Paths

We devise a constant-factor approximation algorithm for the maximization version of the edge-disjoint paths problem if the supply graph together with the demand edges form a planar graph. By planar duality this is equivalent to packing cuts in a planar graph such that each cut contains exactly one demand edge. We also show that the natural linear programming relaxations have constant integrality gap, yielding an approximate max-multiflow min-multicut theorem.
$Z$-oriented triangulations of surfaces

The main objects of the paper are $z$-oriented triangulations of connected closed $2$-dimensional surfaces. A $z$-orientation of a map is a minimal collection of zigzags which double covers the set of edges. We have two possibilities for an edge -- zigzags from the $z$-orientation pass through this edge in different directions (type I) or in the same direction (type II). Then there are two types of faces in a triangulation: the first type is when two edges of the face are of type I and one edge is of type II and the second type is when all edges of the face are of type II. We investigate $z$-oriented triangulations with all faces of the first type (in the general case, any $z$-oriented triangulation can be shredded to a $z$-oriented triangulation of such type). A zigzag is homogeneous if it contains precisely two edges of type I after any edge of type II. We give a topological characterization of the homogeneity of zigzags; in particular, we describe a one-to-one correspondence between $z$-oriented triangulations with homogeneous zigzags and closed $2$-cell embeddings of directed Eulerian graphs in surfaces. At the end, we give an application to one type of the $z$-monodromy.

We prove that any $n$-vertex graph whose complement is triangle-free contains $n^2/12-o(n^2)$ edge-disjoint triangles. This is tight for the disjoint union of two cliques of order $n/2$. We also prove a corresponding stability theorem, that all large graphs attaining the above bound are close to being bipartite. Our results answer a question of Alon and Linial, and make progress on a conjecture of Erdős.
The generic combinatorial simplex
We employ projective Fraïssé theory to define the "generic combinatorial $n$-simplex" as the pro-finite, simplicial complex that is canonically associated with a family of simply defined selection maps between finite triangulations of the simplex. The generic combinatorial $n$-simplex is a combinatorial object that can be used to define the geometric realization of a simplicial complex without any reference to the Euclidean space. It also reflects dynamical properties of its homeomorphism group down to finite combinatorics.
As part of our study of the generic combinatorial simplex, we define and prove results on domination closure for Fraïssé classes, and we develop further the theories of stellar moves and cellular maps. We prove that the domination closure of selection maps contains the class of face-preserving simplicial maps that are cellular on each face of the $n$-simplex and is contained in the class of simplicial, face-preserving near-homeomorphisms. Under the PL-Poincaré conjecture, this gives a characterization of the domination closure of selections.
Distinguishing wheel graphs by the alliance polynomial
Distinctive power of the alliance polynomial has been studied in previous works, for instance, it has been proved that the empty, path, cycle, complete, complete without one edge and star graphs are characterized by its alliance polynomial. Moreover, it has been proved that the family of alliance polynomial of regular graphs with small degree is a very special one, since it does not contain alliance polynomial of graphs other than regular graph with the same degree. In this work we prove that the alliance polynomial also determines the wheel graphs.
Addition of Divisors on Hyperelliptic Curves via Interpolation Polynomials

Two problems are addressed: reduction of an arbitrary degree non-special divisor to the equivalent divisor of the degree equal to genus of a curve, and addition of divisors of arbitrary degrees. The hyperelliptic case is considered as the simplest model. Explicit formulas defining reduced divisors for some particular cases are found. The reduced divisors are obtained in the form of solution of the Jacobi inversion problem which provides the way of computing Abelian functions on arbitrary non-special divisors. An effective reduction algorithm is proposed, which has the advantage that it involves only arithmetic operations on polynomials. The proposed addition algorithm contains more details comparing with the known in cryptography, and is extended to divisors of arbitrary degrees comparing with the known in the theory of hyperelliptic functions.
Structure and colour in triangle-free graphs

Motivated by a recent conjecture of the first author, we prove that every properly coloured triangle-free graph of chromatic number $χ$ contains a rainbow independent set of size $\lceil\frac12χ\rceil$. This is sharp up to a factor $2$. This result and its short proof have implications for the related notion of chromatic discrepancy.
Drawing inspiration from both structural and extremal graph theory, we conjecture that every triangle-free graph of chromatic number $χ$ contains an induced cycle of length $Ω(χ\logχ)$ as $χ\to\infty$. Even if one only demands an induced path of length $Ω(χ\logχ)$, the conclusion would be sharp up to a constant multiple. We prove it for regular girth $5$ graphs and for girth $21$ graphs.
As a common strengthening of the induced paths form of this conjecture and of Johansson's theorem (1996), we posit the existence of some $c >0$ such that for every forest $H$ on $D$ vertices, every triangle-free and induced $H$-free graph has chromatic number at most $c D/\log D$. We prove this assertion with `triangle-free' replaced by `regular girth $5$'.
Cop number of graphs without long holes
A hole in a graph is an induced cycle of length at least 4. We give a simple winning strategy for t-3 cops to capture a robber in the game of cops and robbers played in a graph that does not contain a hole of length at least t. This strengthens a theorem of Joret-Kaminski-Theis, who proved that t-2 cops have a winning strategy in such graphs. As a consequence of our bound, we also give an inequality relating the cop number and the Dilworth number of a graph.

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph and $n$ a positive integer. Let $I_n(G)$ be the abstract simplicial complex whose simplices are the subsets of $V$ that do not contain an independent set of size $n$ in $G$. We study the collapsibility numbers of the complexes $I_n(G)$ for various classes of graphs, focusing on the class of graphs with maximum degree bounded by $Δ$. As an application, we obtain the following result:
Let $G$ be a claw-free graph with maximum degree at most $Δ$. Then, every collection of $\left\lfloor\left(\fracΔ{2}+1\right)(n-1)\right\rfloor+1$ independent sets in $G$ has a rainbow independent set of size $n$.
A result on fractional (a,b,k)-critical covered graphs

For a graph $G$, the set of vertices in $G$ is denoted by $V(G)$, and the set of edges in $G$ is denoted by $E(G)$. A fractional $[a,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a function $h$ from $E(G)$ to $[0,1]$ satisfying $a\leq d_G^{h}(v)\leq b$ for every vertex $v$ of $G$, where $d_G^{h}(v)=\sum\limits_{e\in E(v)}{h(e)}$ and $E(v)=\{e=uv:u\in V(G)\}$. A graph $G$ is called fractional $[a,b]$-covered if $G$ contains a fractional $[a,b]$-factor $h$ with $h(e)=1$ for any edge $e$ of $G$. A graph $G$ is called fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered if $G-Q$ is fractional $[a,b]$-covered for any $Q\subseteq V(G)$ with $|Q|=k$. In this article, we demonstrate a neighborhood condition for a graph to be fractional $(a,b,k)$-critical covered. Furthermore, we claim that the result is sharp.
Cancellative hypergraphs and Steiner triple systems

A triple system is cancellative if it does not contain three distinct sets $A,B,C$ such that the symmetric difference of $A$ and $B$ is contained in $C$. We show that every cancellative triple system $\mathcal{H}$ that satisfies certain inequality between the sizes of $\mathcal{H}$ and its shadow must be structurally close to the balanced blowup of some Steiner triple system. Our result contains a stability theorem for cancellative triple systems due to Keevash and Mubayi as a special case. It also implies that the boundary of the feasible region of cancellative triple systems has infinitely many local maxima, thus giving the first example showing this phenomenon.
Parity of transversals of Latin squares

We introduce a notion of parity for transversals, and use it to show that in Latin squares of order $2 \bmod 4$, the number of transversals is a multiple of 4. We also demonstrate a number of relationships (mostly congruences modulo 4) involving $E_1,\dots, E_n$, where $E_i$ is the number of diagonals of a given Latin square that contain exactly $i$ different symbols.
Let $A(i\mid j)$ denote the matrix obtained by deleting row $i$ and column $j$ from a parent matrix $A$. Define $t_{ij}$ to be the number of transversals in $L(i\mid j)$, for some fixed Latin square $L$. We show that $t_{ab}\equiv t_{cd}\bmod2$ for all $a,b,c,d$ and $L$. Also, if $L$ has odd order then the number of transversals of $L$ equals $t_{ab}$ mod 2. We conjecture that $t_{ac} + t_{bc} + t_{ad} + t_{bd} \equiv 0 \bmod 4$ for all $a,b,c,d$.
In the course of our investigations we prove several results that could be of interest in other contexts. For example, we show that the number of perfect matchings in a $k$-regular bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices is divisible by $4$ when $n$ is odd and $k\equiv0\bmod 4$. We also show that $${\rm per}\, A(a \mid c)+{\rm per}\, A(b \mid c)+{\rm per}\, A(a \mid d)+{\rm per}\, A(b \mid d) \equiv 0 \bmod 4$$ for all $a,b,c,d$, when $A$ is an integer matrix of odd order with all row and columns sums equal to $k\equiv2\bmod4$.
Maximum independent sets in (pyramid, even hole)-free graphs
A \emph{hole} in a graph is an induced cycle with at least 4 vertices. A graph is \emph{even-hole-free} if it does not contain a hole on an even number of vertices. A \emph{pyramid} is a graph made of three chordless paths $P_1 = a \dots b_1$,
$P_2 = a \dots b_2$, $P_3 = a \dots b_3$ of length at least~1, two of which have length at least 2, vertex-disjoint except at $a$, and such that $b_1b_2b_3$ is a triangle and no edges exist between the paths except those of the triangle and the three edges incident with $a$.
We give a polynomial time algorithm to compute a maximum weighted independent set in a even-hole-free graph that contains no pyramid as an induced subgraph. Our result is based on a decomposition theorem and on bounding the number of minimal separators. All our results hold for a slightly larger class of graphs, the class of (square, prism, pyramid, theta, even wheel)-free graphs.
Kalai's conjecture in $r$-partite $r$-graphs
Kalai conjectured that every $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with more than $\frac{t-1}{r} {n \choose r-1}$ edges contains all tight $r$-trees of some fixed size $t$. We prove Kalai's conjecture for $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs. Our result is asymptotically best possible up to replacing the term $\frac{t-1}{r}$ with the term $\frac{t-r+1}{r}$.
We apply our main result in graphs to show an upper bound for the Turán number of trees.

For a positive constant $α$ a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is called an $α$-expander if every vertex set $U$ of size at most $n/2$ has an external neighborhood whose size is at least $α\left|U\right|$. We study cycle lengths in expanding graphs. We first prove that cycle lengths in $α$-expanders are well distributed. Specifically, we show that for every $0<α\leq1$ there exist positive constants $n_{0}$, $C$ and $A=O(1/α)$ such that for every $α$-expander $G$ on $n\geq n_{0}$ vertices and every integer $\ell\in\left[C\log n,\frac{n}{C}\right]$, $G$ contains a cycle whose length is between $\ell$ and $\ell+A$; the order of dependence of the additive error term $A$ on $α$ is optimal. Secondly, we show that every $α$-expander on $n$ vertices contains $Ω\left(\frac{α^{3}}{\log\left(1/α\right)}\right)n$ different cycle lengths. Finally, we introduce another expansion-type property, guaranteeing the existence of a linearly long interval in the set of cycle lengths. For $β>0$ a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is called a $β$-graph if every pair of disjoint sets of size at least $βn$ are connected by an edge. We prove that for every $β<1/20$ there exist positive constants $b_{1}=O\left(\frac{1}{\log\left(1/β\right)}\right)$ and $b_{2}=O\left(β\right)$ such that every $β$-graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for every integer $\ell\in\left[b_{1}\log n,(1-b_{2})n\right]$; the order of dependence of $b_{1}$ and $b_{2}$ on $β$ is optimal.

On existence of perfect bitrades in Hamming graphs

A pair $(T_0,T_1)$ of disjoint sets of vertices of a graph $G$ is called a perfect bitrade in $G$ if any ball of radius 1 in $G$ contains exactly one vertex in $T_0$ and $T_1$ or none simultaneously. The volume of a perfect bitrade $(T_0,T_1)$ is the size of $T_0$. In particular, if $C_0$ and $C_1$ are distinct perfect codes with minimum distance $3$ in $G$ then $(C_0\setminus C_1,C_1\setminus C_0)$ is a perfect bitrade. For any $q\geq 3$, $r\geq 1$ we construct perfect bitrades in the Hamming graph $H(qr+1,q)$ of volume $(q!)^r$ and show that for $r=1$ their volume is minimum.
Density of Numerical sets associated to a Numerical semigroup

A numerical set is a co-finite subset of the natural numbers that contains zero. Its Frobenius number is the largest number in its complement. Each numerical set has an associated semigroup $A(T)=\{t\mid t+T\subseteq T\}$, which has the same Frobenius number as $T$. For a fixed Frobenius number $f$ there are $2^{f-1}$ numerical sets. It is known that there is a number $γ$ close to $0.484$ such that the ratio of these numerical sets that are mapped to $N_f=\{0\}\cup(f,\infty)$ is asymptotically $γ$. We identify a collection of families $N(D,f)$ of numerical semigroups such that for a fixed $D$ the ratio of the $2^{f-1}$ numerical sets that are mapped to $N(D,f)$ converges to a positive limit as $f$ goes to infinity. We denote the limit as $γ_D$, these constants sum up to $1$ meaning that they asymptotically account for almost all numerical sets.
