Vanishing Flats: A Combinatorial Viewpoint on the Planarity of Functions and Their Application
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a function $f$ from $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ to $\mathbb{F}_2^n$, the planarity of $f$ is usually measured by its differential uniformity and differential spectrum. In this paper, we propose the concept of vanishing flats, which supplies a combinatorial viewpoint on the planarity. First, the number of vanishing flats of $f$ can be regarded as a measure of the distance between $f$ and the set of almost perfect nonlinear functions. In some cases, the number of vanishing flats serves as an "intermediate" concept between differential uniformity and differential spectrum, which contains more information than differential uniformity, however less than the differential spectrum. Secondly, the set of vanishing flats forms a combinatorial configuration called partial quadruple system, since it convey detailed structural information about $f$. We initiate this study by considering the number of vanishing flats and the partial quadruple systems associated with monomials and Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials. In addition, we present an application of vanishing flats to the partition of a vector space into disjoint equidimensional affine spaces. We conclude the paper with several further questions and challenges.

Exact results on generalized Erdős-Gallai problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalized Turán problems have been a central topic of study in extremal combinatorics throughout the last few decades. One such problem is maximizing the number of cliques of size $t$ in a graph of a fixed order that does not contain any path (or cycle) of length at least a given number. Both of the path-free and cycle-free extremal problems were recently considered and asymptotically solved by Luo. We fully resolve these problems by characterizing all possible extremal graphs. We further extend these results by solving the edge-variant of these problems where the number of edges is fixed instead of the number of vertices. We similarly obtain exact characterization of the extremal graphs for these edge variants.
Planar Turán Number of the $Θ_6$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a nonempty family of graphs. A graph $G$ is called $\mathcal{F}$-\textit{free} if it contains no graph from $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. For a positive integer $n$, the \emph{planar Turán number} of $\F$, denoted by $\ex_{\p}(n,\F)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\F$-free planar graph. Let $Θ_k$ be the family of Theta graphs on $k\geq 4$ vertices, that is, graphs obtained by joining a pair of non-consecutive vertices of a $k$-cycle with an edge. Lan, Shi and Song determined an upper bound $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_6)\leq \frac{18}{7}n-\frac{36}{7}$, but for large $n$, they did not verify that the bound is sharp. In this paper, we improve their bound by proving $\text{ex}_{\mathcal{P}}(n,Θ_6)\leq \frac{18}{7}n-\frac{48}{7}$ and then we demonstrate the existence of infinitely many positive integer $n$ and an $n$-vertex $Θ_6$-free planar graph attaining the bound.

Rainbow Turán number of even cycles, repeated patterns and blow-ups of cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
The rainbow Turán number $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,H)$ of a graph $H$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with no rainbow subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We prove that for any integer $k\geq 2$, $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This is tight and establishes a conjecture of Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. We use the same method to prove several other conjectures in various topics. First, we prove that there exists a constant $c$ such that any properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with more than $cn(\log n)^4$ edges contains a rainbow cycle. It is known that there exist properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graphs with $Ω(n\log n)$ edges which do not contain any rainbow cycle. Secondly, we show that in any proper edge-colouring of $K_n$ with $o(n^{\frac{r}{r-1}\cdot \frac{k-1}{k}})$ colours, there exist $r$ colour-isomorphic, pairwise vertex-disjoint copies of $C_{2k}$. This proves in a strong form a conjecture of Conlon and Tyomkyn, and a strenghtened version proposed by Xu, Zhang, Jing and Ge. Moreover, we answer a question of Jiang and Newman by showing that there exists a constant $c=c(r)$ such that any $n$-vertex graph with more than $cn^{2-1/r}(\log n)^{7/r}$ edges contains the $r$-blowup of an even cycle. Finally, we prove that the $r$-blowup of $C_{2k}$ has Turán number $O(n^{2-\frac{1}{r}+\frac{1}{k+r-1}+o(1)})$, which can be used to disprove an old conjecture of Erd\H os and Simonovits.
Efficient fully dynamic elimination forests with applications to detecting long paths and cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a data structure that in a dynamic graph of treedepth at most $d$, which is modified over time by edge insertions and deletions, maintains an optimum-height elimination forest. The data structure achieves worst-case update time $2^{{\cal O}(d^2)}$, which matches the best known parameter dependency in the running time of a static fpt algorithm for computing the treedepth of a graph. This improves a result of Dvořák et al. [ESA 2014], who for the same problem achieved update time $f(d)$ for some non-elementary (i.e. tower-exponential) function $f$. As a by-product, we improve known upper bounds on the sizes of minimal obstructions for having treedepth $d$ from doubly-exponential in $d$ to $d^{{\cal O}(d)}$. As applications, we design new fully dynamic parameterized data structures for detecting long paths and cycles in general graphs. More precisely, for a fixed parameter $k$ and a dynamic graph $G$, modified over time by edge insertions and deletions, our data structures maintain answers to the following queries: - Does $G$ contain a simple path on $k$ vertices? - Does $G$ contain a simple cycle on at least $k$ vertices? In the first case, the data structure achieves amortized update time $2^{{\cal O}(k^2)}$. In the second case, the amortized update time is $2^{{\cal O}(k^4)} + {\cal O}(k \log n)$. In both cases we assume access to a dictionary on the edges of $G$.

Robertson's conjecture I. Well-quasi-ordering bounded tree-width graphs by the topological minor relation
Robertson and Seymour's celebrated Graph Minor Theorem states that graphs are well-quasi-ordered by the minor relation. Unlike the minor relation, the topological minor relation does not well-quasi-order graphs in general. Among all known infinite antichains with respect to the topological containment, subdivisions of a graph obtained from an arbitrarily long path by duplicating each edge can be found. In the 1980's Robertson conjectured that this is the only obstruction. Formally, he conjectured that for every positive integer $k$, graphs that do not contain the graph obtained from a path of length $k$ by duplicating each edge as a topological minor are well-quasi-ordered by the topological minor relation. The case $k=1$ implies Kruskal's Tree Theorem, and the case $k=2$ implies a conjecture of Vázsonyi on subcubic graphs. This series of papers dedicates a proof of Robertson's conjecture. We prove Robertson's conjecture for graphs of bounded tree-width in this paper. It is an essential step toward the complete proof of Robertson's conjecture, and the machinery developed in this paper will be applied in future papers of the series. This bounded tree-width case proved in this paper implies all known results about well-quasi-ordering graphs by the topological minor relation that can be proved without using the Graph Minor Theorem, and our proof in this paper is self-contained.
The rainbow Erdős-Rothschild problem for the Fano plane
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Fano plane is the unique linear 3-uniform hypergraph on seven vertices and seven hyperedges. It was recently proved that, for all $n \geq 8$, the balanced complete bipartite 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, denoted by $B_n$, is the 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with the largest number of hyperedges that does not contain a copy of the Fano plane. For sufficiently large $r$ and $n$, we show that $B_n$ admits the largest number of $r$-edge colorings with no rainbow copy of the Fano plane.
Integer colorings with forbidden rainbow sums
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a set of positive integers $A \subseteq [n]$, an $r$-coloring of $A$ is rainbow sum-free if it contains no rainbow Schur triple. In this paper we initiate the study of the rainbow Erdős-Rothchild problem in the context of sum-free sets, which asks for the subsets of $[n]$ with the maximum number of rainbow sum-free $r$-colorings. We show that for $r=3$, the interval $[n]$ is optimal, while for $r\geq8$, the set $[\lfloor n/2 \rfloor, n]$ is optimal. We also prove a stability theorem for $r\geq4$. The proofs rely on the hypergraph container method, and some ad-hoc stability analysis.
Computing Subset Transversals in $H$-Free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the computational complexity of two well-known graph transversal problems, namely Subset Feedback Vertex Set and Subset Odd Cycle Transversal, by restricting the input to $H$-free graphs, that is, to graphs that do not contain some fixed graph~$H$ as an induced subgraph. By combining known and new results, we determine the computational complexity of both problems on $H$-free graphs for every graph $H$ except when $H=sP_1+P_4$ for some $s\geq 1$. As part of our approach, we introduce the Subset Vertex Cover problem and prove that it is polynomial-time solvable for $(sP_1+P_4)$-free graphs for every $s\geq 1$.
Compaction for two models of logarithmic-depth trees: Analysis and Experiments
Published • View Publication • BIB
We are interested in the quantitative analysis of the compaction ratio for two classical families of trees: recursive trees and plane binary increasing trees. These families are typical representatives of tree models with a small depth. Once a tree of size $n$ is compacted by keeping only one occurrence of all fringe subtrees appearing in the tree the resulting graph contains only $O(n / \ln n)$ nodes. This result must be compared to classical results of compaction in the families of simply generated trees, where the analogous result states that the compacted structure is of size of order $n / \sqrt{\ln n}$. The result about the plane binary increasing trees has already been proved, but we propose a new and generic approach to get the result. Finally, an experimental study is presented, based on a prototype implementation of compacted binary search trees that are modeled by plane binary increasing trees.

Localised codegree conditions for tight Hamilton cycles in 3-uniform hypergraphs
We study sufficient conditions for the existence of Hamilton cycles in uniformly dense $3$-uniform hypergraphs. Problems of this type were first considered by Lenz, Mubayi, and Mycroft for loose Hamilton cycles and Aigner-Horev and Levy considered it for tight Hamilton cycles for a fairly strong notion of uniformly dense hypergraphs. We focus on tight cycles and obtain optimal results for a weaker notion of uniformly dense hypergraphs. We show that if an $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraph $H=(V,E)$ has the property that for any set of vertices $X$ and for any collection $P$ of pairs of vertices, the number of hyperedges composed by a pair belonging to $P$ and one vertex from $X$ is at least $(1/4+o(1))|X||P| - o(|V|^3)$ and $H$ has minimum vertex degree at least $Ω(|V|^2)$, then $H$ contains a tight Hamilton cycle. A probabilistic construction shows that the constant $1/4$ is optimal in this context.
On the balanced upper chromatic number of finite projective planes
In this paper, we study vertex colorings of hypergraphs in which all color class sizes differ by at most one (balanced colorings) and each hyperedge contains at least two vertices of the same color (rainbow-free colorings). For any hypergraph $H$, the maximum number $k$ for which there is a balanced rainbow-free $k$-coloring of $H$ is called the balanced upper chromatic number of the hypergraph. We confirm the conjecture of Araujo-Pardo, Kiss and Montejano by determining the balanced upper chromatic number of the desarguesian projective plane $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ for all $q$. In addition, we determine asymptotically the balanced upper chromatic number of several families of non-desarguesian projective planes and also provide a general lower bound for arbitrary projective planes using probabilistic methods which determines the parameter up to a multiplicative constant.

More two-distance counterexamples to Borsuk's conjecture from strongly regular graphs
In 2013 Andriy V. Bondarenko showed how to construct a two-distance counterexample to Borsuk's conjecture from any strongly regular graph whose vertex set is not the union of at most $f+1$ cliques (sets of pairwise adjacent vertices) where $f$ is the multiplicity of the second-largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. He applied that construction to those two graphs that he had been able to prove to fulfill the condition: From the $G_2(4)$ graph (on 416 vertices) he got a 65-dimensional two-distance counterexample. From the $Fi_{23}$ graph (on 31671 vertices) he got a 782-dimensional one and, by considering certain induced subgraphs, counterexamples in dimensions 781, 780 and 779. This article presents two other strongly regular graphs fulfilling the condition, on 28431 and on 2401, resp., vertices. It gives dedicated counterexamples in dimensions from 781 down to 764 derived from the bigger graph (that turned out to be an induced subgraph of the $Fi_{23}$ graph) and a 240-dimensional counterexample derived from the smaller graph. Several contained propositions rely on the results of (often extensive) computations, mainly within the computer algebra system GAP. The source package contains (almost) all used source files.

$Δ$-critical graphs with a vertex of degree 2
Let $G$ be a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ$. A classic result of Vizing shows that $χ'(G)$, the chromatic index of $G$, is either $Δ$ or $Δ+1$. We say $G$ is of \emph{Class 1} if $χ'(G)=Δ$, and is of \emph{Class 2} otherwise. A graph $G$ is \emph{$Δ$-critical} if $χ'(G)=Δ+1$ and $χ'(H)<Δ+1$ for every proper subgraph $H$ of $G$, and is \emph{overfull} if $|E(G)|>Δ\lfloor (|V(G)|-1)/2 \rfloor$. Clearly, overfull graphs are Class 2. Hilton and Zhao in 1997 conjectured that if $G$ is obtained from an $n$-vertex $Δ$-regular Class 1 graph with maximum degree greater than $n/3$ by splitting a vertex, then being overfull is the only reason for $G$ to be Class 2. This conjecture was only confirmed when $Δ\ge \frac{n}{2}(\sqrt{7}-1)\approx 0.82n$. In this paper, we improve the bound on $Δ$ from $\frac{n}{2}(\sqrt{7}-1)$ to $0.75n$. Considering the structure of $Δ$-critical graphs with a vertex of degree 2, we also show that for an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph with $Δ\ge \frac{3n}{4}$, if it contains a vertex of degree 2, then it is overfull. We actually obtain a more general form of this result, which partially supports the overfull conjecture of Chetwynd and Hilton from 1986, which states that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph with $Δ>n/3$, then $G$ contains an overfull subgraph $H$ with $Δ(H)=Δ$. Our proof techniques are new and might shed some light on attacking both of the conjectures when $Δ$ is large.

Pertfect matching and zero-sum 3-magic labeling
A mapping $l : E(G) \rightarrow A$, where $A$ is an abelian group which written additively, is called a labeling of the graph $G$. For every positive integer $h \geqslant 2$, a graph $G$ is said to be zero-sum $h$-magic if there is an edge labeling $l$ from $E(G)$ into $\mathbb{Z}_{h} \backslash \{0\}$ such that $s(v) = \sum_{uv\in E(G)}l(uv) = 0$ for every vertex $v \in V(G)$. In 2014, Saieed Akbari, Farhad Rahmati and Sanaz Zare conjectured that every 5-regular graph admits a zero-sum $3$-magic labeling. In this paper, we obtained that every 5-regular graph with every edge contains in a triangle must have a perfect matching, and admits a zero-sum 3-magic labeling, which partially confirms this conjecture.

On the number of frequency hypercubes $F^n(4;2,2)$

A frequency $n$-cube $F^n(4;2,2)$ is an $n$-dimensional $4$-by-...-by-$4$ array filled by $0$s and $1$s such that each line contains exactly two $1$s. We classify the frequency $4$-cubes $F^4(4;2,2)$, find a testing set of size $25$ for $F^3(4;2,2)$, and derive an upper bound on the number of $F^n(4;2,2)$. Additionally, for any $n$ greater than $2$, we construct an $F^n(4;2,2)$ that cannot be refined to a latin hypercube, while each of its sub-$F^{n-1}(4;2,2)$ can. A central limit theorem for descents of a Mallows permutation and its inverse
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper studies the asymptotic distribution of descents $\des(w)$ in a permutation $w$, and its inverse, distributed according to the Mallows measure. The Mallows measure is a non-uniform probability measure on permutations introduced to study ranked data. Under this measure, permutations are weighted according to the number of inversions they contain, with the weighting controlled by a parameter $q$. The main results are a Berry-Esseen theorem for $\des(w)+\des(w^{-1})$ as well as a joint central limit theorem for $(\des(w),\des(w^{-1}))$ to a bivariate normal with a non-trivial correlation depending on $q$. The proof uses Stein's method with size-bias coupling along with a regenerative process associated to the Mallows measure.

Improved bounds for some facially constrained colorings
Published in Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 2020 • View Publication • BIB
A facial-parity edge-coloring of a $2$-edge-connected plane graph is a facially-proper edge-coloring in which every face is incident with zero or an odd number of edges of each color. A facial-parity vertex-coloring of a $2$-connected plane graph is a facially-proper vertex-coloring in which every face is incident with zero or an odd number of vertices of each color. Czap and Jendroľ (in Facially-constrained colorings of plane graphs: A survey, Discrete Math. 340 (2017), 2691--2703), conjectured that $10$ colors suffice in both colorings. We present an infinite family of counterexamples to both conjectures. A facial $(P_{k}, P_{\ell})$-WORM coloring of a plane graph $G$ is a coloring of the vertices such that $G$ contains no rainbow facial $k$-path and no monochromatic facial $\ell$-path. Czap, Jendroľ and Valiska (in WORM colorings of planar graphs, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 37 (2017), 353--368), proved that for any integer $n\ge 12$ there exists a connected plane graph on $n$ vertices, with maximum degree at least $6$, having no facial $(P_{3},P_{3})$-WORM coloring. They also asked if there exists a graph with maximum degree $4$ having the same property. We prove that for any integer $n\ge 18$, there exists a connected plane graph, with maximum degree $4$, with no facial $(P_{3},P_{3})$-WORM coloring.

Tubes Containing String Modules in Symmetric Special Multiserial Algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
Symmetric special multiserial algebras are algebras that correspond to decorated hypergraphs with orientation, called Brauer configurations. In this paper, we use the combinatorics of Brauer configurations to understand the module category of symmetric special multiserial algebras via their Auslander-Reiten quiver. In particular, we provide methods for determining the existence and ranks of tubes in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver of symmetric special multiserial algebras using only the information from the underlying Brauer configuration. Firstly, we define a combinatorial walk around the Brauer configuration, called a Green `hyperwalk', which generalises the existing notion of a Green walk around a Brauer graph. Periodic Green hyperwalks are then shown to correspond to periodic projective resolutions of certain classes of string modules over the corresponding symmetric special multiserial algebra. Periodic Green hyperwalks thus determine certain classes of tubes in the stable Auslander-Reiten quiver, with the ranks of the tubes determined by the periods of the walks. Finally, we provide a description of additional rank two tubes in symmetric special multiserial algebras that do not arise from Green hyperwalks, but which nevertheless contain string modules at the mouth. This includes an explicit description of the space of extensions between string modules at the mouth of tubes of rank two.

On the average Steiner 3-eccentricity of trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Steiner $k$-eccentricity of a vertex $v$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum Steiner distance over all $k$-subsets of $V(G)$ which contain $v$. In this paper Steiner $3$-eccentricity is studied on trees. Some general properties of the Steiner $3$-eccentricity of trees are given. A tree transformation which does not increase the average Steiner $3$-eccentricity is given. As its application, several lower and upper bounds for the average Steiner $3$-eccentricity of trees are derived.
