Transverse Wave: an impartial color-propagation game inspired by Social Influence and Quantum Nim
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study a colorful, impartial combinatorial game played on a two-dimensional grid, Transverse Wave. We are drawn to this game because of its apparent simplicity, contrasting intractability, and intrinsic connection to two other combinatorial games, one inspired by social influence and another inspired by quantum superpositions. More precisely, we show that Transverse Wave is at the intersection of social-influence-inspired Friend Circle and superposition-based Demi-Quantum Nim. Transverse Wave is also connected with Schaefer's logic game Avoid True. In addition to analyzing the mathematical structures and computational complexity of Transverse Wave, we provide a web-based version of the game, playable at https://turing.plymouth.edu/~kgb1013/DB/combGames/transverseWave.html. Furthermore, we formulate a basic network-influence inspired game, called Demographic Influence, which simultaneously generalizes Node-Kyles and Demi-Quantum Nim (which in turn contains as special cases Nim, Avoid True, and Transverse Wave). These connections illuminate the lattice order, induced by special-case/generalization relationships over mathematical games, fundamental to both the design and comparative analyses of combinatorial games.

Extremal Numbers of Hypergraph Suspensions of Even Cycles
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 118, 2024, 103935 • View Publication • BIB
For fixed $k\ge 2$, determining the order of magnitude of the number of edges in an $n$-vertex bipartite graph not containing $C_{2k}$, the cycle of length $2k$, is a long-standing open problem. We consider an extension of this problem to triple systems. In particular, we prove that the maximum number of triples in an $n$-vertex triple system which does not contain a $C_6$ in the link of any vertex, has order of magnitude $n^{7/3}$. Additionally, we construct new families of dense $C_6$-free bipartite graphs with $n$ vertices and $n^{4/3}$ edges in order of magnitude.

Loose cores and cycles in random hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Inspired by the study of loose cycles in hypergraphs, we define the \emph{loose core} in hypergraphs as a structure which mirrors the close relationship between cycles and $2$-cores in graphs. We prove that in the $r$-uniform binomial random hypergraph $H^r(n,p)$, the order of the loose core undergoes a phase transition at a certain critical threshold and determine this order, as well as the number of edges, asymptotically in the subcritical and supercritical regimes. Our main tool is an algorithm called CoreConstruct, which enables us to analyse a peeling process for the loose core. By analysing this algorithm we determine the asymptotic degree distribution of vertices in the loose core and in particular how many vertices and edges the loose core contains. As a corollary we obtain an improved upper bound on the length of the longest loose cycle in $H^r(n,p)$.

Clique factors in pseudorandom graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $n$-vertex graph is said to to be $(p,β)$-bijumbled if for any vertex sets $A,B\subseteq V(G)$, we have \[e(A,B)=p|A||B|\pm β\sqrt{|A||B|}.\] We prove that for any $3\leq r\in \mathbb{N}$ and $c>0$ there exists an $\varepsilon>0$ such that any $n$-vertex $(p,β)$-bijumbled graph with $n\in r \mathbb{N}$, $δ(G)\geq cpn$ and $β\leq \varepsilon p^{r-1}n$, contains a $K_r$-factor. This implies a corresponding result for the stronger pseudorandom notion of $(n,d,λ)$-graphs. For the case of triangle factors, that is when $r=3$, this result resolves a conjecture of Krivelevich, Sudakov and Szabó from 2004 and it is tight due to a pseudorandom triangle-free construction of Alon. In fact, in this case even more is true: as a corollary to this result and a result of Han, Kohayakawa, Person and the author, we can conclude that the same condition of $β=o(p^2n)$ actually guarantees that a $(p,β)$-bijumbled graph $G$ contains every graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree at most 2.

Hamiltonicity in infinite tournaments
We prove that for all countable tournaments $D$ the recently discovered compactification $|D|$ by their ends and limit edges contains a topological Hamilton path: a topological arc that contains every vertex. If $D$ is strongly connected, then $|D|$ contains a topological Hamilton circle. These results extend well-known theorems about finite tournaments, which we show do not extend to the infinite in a purely combinatorial setting.

Independent sets in hypergraphs omitting an intersection
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices is an $(n,k,\ell)$-omitting system if it does not contain two edges whose intersection has size exactly $\ell$. If in addition it does not contain two edges whose intersection has size greater than $\ell$, then it is an $(n,k,\ell)$-system. Rödl and Šiňajová proved a lower bound for the independence number of $(n,k,\ell)$-systems that is sharp in order of magnitude for fixed $2 \le \ell \le k-1$. We consider the same question for the larger class of $(n,k,\ell)$-omitting systems. For $k\le 2\ell+1$, we believe that the behavior is similar to the case of $(n,k,\ell)$-systems and prove a nontrivial lower bound for the first open case $\ell=k-2$. For $k>2\ell+1$ we give new lower and upper bounds which show that the minimum independence number of $(n,k,\ell)$-omitting systems has a very different behavior than for $(n,k,\ell)$-systems. Our lower bound for $\ell=k-2$ uses some adaptations of the random greedy independent set algorithm, and our upper bounds (constructions) for $k> 2\ell+1$ are obtained from some pseudorandom graphs. We also prove some related results where we forbid more than two edges with a prescribed common intersection size and this leads to some applications in Ramsey theory. For example, we obtain good bounds for the Ramsey number $r_{k}(F^{k},t)$, where $F^{k}$ is the $k$-uniform Fan. Here the behavior is quite different than the case $k=2$ which reduces to the classical graph Ramsey number $r(3,t)$.

Arc transitive circulants
This short paper presents characterisations of normal arc-transitive circulants and arc-transitive normal circulants, that is, for a connected arc-transitive circulant $Γ=\Cay(C,S)$, it is shown that 1. Aut(C,S) is transitive on S if and only if each element of S has order n; 2. $AutΓ\rhd C$ if and only if S does not contain a coset of any subgroup. This completes the classification of arc-transitive circulants given by Li-Xia-Zhou.

Perfect matching and distance spectral radius in graphs and bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A perfect matching in a graph $G$ is a set of nonadjacent edges covering every vertex of $G$. Motivated by recent progress on the relations between the eigenvalues and the matching number of a graph, in this paper, we aim to present a distance spectral radius condition to guarantee the existence of a perfect matching. Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex connected graph where $n$ is even and $λ_{1}(D(G))$ be the distance spectral radius of $G$. Then the following statements are true. \noindent$\rm{I)}$ If $4\le n\le10$ and ${λ}_{1} (D\left(G\right))\le {λ}_{1} (D(S_{n,{\frac{n}{2}}-1}))$, then $G$ contains a perfect matching unless $G\cong S_{n,{\frac{n}{2}-1}}$ where $S_{n,{\frac{n}{2}-1}}\cong K_{{\frac{n}{2}-1}}\vee ({\frac{n}{2}+1})K_1$. \noindent$\rm{II)}$ If $n\ge 12$ and ${λ}_{1} (D\left(G\right))\le {λ}_{1} (D(G^*))$, then $G$ contains a perfect matching unless $G\cong G^*$ where $G^*\cong K_1\vee (K_{n-3}\cup2K_1)$. Moreover, if $G$ is a connected $2n$-vertex balanced bipartite graph with $λ_{1}(D(G))\le λ_{1}(D(B_{n-1,n-2})) $, then $G$ contains a perfect matching, unless $G\cong B_{n-1,n-2}$ where $B_{n-1,n-2}$ is obtained from $K_{n,n-2}$ by attaching two pendent vertices to a vertex in the $n$-vertex part.
On Aharoni's rainbow generalization of the Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 344, Issue 5, 2021, 112319 • View Publication • BIB
For a digraph $G$ and $v \in V(G)$, let $δ^+(v)$ be the number of out-neighbors of $v$ in $G$. The Caccetta-Häggkvist conjecture states that for all $k \ge 1$, if $G$ is a digraph with $n = |V(G)|$ such that $δ^+(v) \ge k$ for all $v \in V(G)$, then G contains a directed cycle of length at most $\lceil n/k \rceil$. In [2], Aharoni proposes a generalization of this conjecture, that a simple edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices with $n$ color classes, each of size $k$, has a rainbow cycle of length at most $\lceil n/k \rceil$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture if each color class has size $Ω(k \log k)$.
Circumference of essentially 4-connected planar triangulations
Published in Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications vol. 25, no. 1, pp. 121-132 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
A $3$-connected graph $G$ is essentially $4$-connected if, for any $3$-cut $S\subseteq V(G)$ of $G$, at most one component of $G-S$ contains at least two vertices. We prove that every essentially $4$-connected maximal planar graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $\frac{2}{3}(n+4)$; moreover, this bound is sharp.

Improvements on induced subgraphs of given sizes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given integers $m$ and $f$, let $S_n(m,f)$ consist of all integers $e$ such that every $n$-vertex graph with $e$ edges contains an $m$-vertex induced subgraph with $f$ edges, and let $σ(m,f)=\limsup_{n\rightarrow\infty} |S_n(m,f)|/\binom{n}{2}$. As a natural extension of an extremal problem of Erdős, this was investigated by Erdős, Füredi, Rothschild and Sós twenty years ago. Their main result indicates that integers in $S_n(m,f)$ are rare for most pairs $(m,f)$, though they also found infinitely many pairs $(m,f)$ whose $σ(m,f)$ is a fixed positive constant. Here we aim to provide some improvements on this study. Our first result shows that $σ(m,f)\leq \frac12$ holds for all but finitely many pairs $(m,f)$ and the constant $\frac12$ cannot be improved. This answers a question of Erdős et. al. Our second result considers infinitely many pairs $(m,f)$ of special forms, whose exact values of $σ(m,f)$ were conjectured by Erdős et. al. We partially solve this conjecture (only leaving two open cases) by making progress on some constructions which are related to number theory. Our proofs are based on the research of Erdős et. al and involve different arguments in number theory. We also discuss some related problems.

Generalized saturation problems for cliques, paths, and stars
A graph $G$ is $F$-saturated if it does not contain any copy of $F$, but the addition of any missing edge in $G$ creates at least one copy of $F$. Inspired by work of Alon and Shikhelman regarding a similar question for $F$-free graphs, Kritschgau, Methuku, Tait, and Timmons introduced the parameter of $\text{sat}_H(n,F)$ to denote the minimum number of copies of some subgraph $H$ in an $F$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we address this generalized saturation problem with special focus on $\text{sat}_{K_r}(n,S_t)$ and $\text{sat}_{S_r}(n,S_t)$ This relates to recent work by Chakraborti and Loh regarding $\text{sat}_{K_r}(n,K_t)$ and by Ergemlidze, Methuku, Tait, and Timmons regarding $\text{sat}_{S_r}(n,K_t)$. We also provide some results regarding paths and arbitrary trees.

Pure pairs. VII. Homogeneous submatrices in 0/1-matrices with a forbidden submatrix
Published • View Publication • BIB
For integer $n>0$, let $f(n)$ be the number of rows of the largest all-0 or all-1 square submatrix of $M$, minimized over all $n\times n$ $0/1$-matrices $M$. Thus $f(n)= O(\log n)$. But let us fix a matrix $H$, and define $f_H(n)$ to be the same, minimized over over all $n\times n$ $0/1$-matrices $M$ such that neither $M$ nor its complement (that is, change all $0$'s to $1$'s and vice versa) contains $H$ as a submatrix. It is known that $f_H(n)\ge εn^c$, where $c, ε>0$ are constants depending on $H$. When can we take $c=1$? If so, then one of $H$ and its complement must be an acyclic matrix (that is, the corresponding bipartite graph is a forest). Korandi, Pach, and Tomon conjectured the converse, that $f_H(n)$ is linear in $n$ for every acyclic matrix $H$; and they proved it for certain matrices $H$ with only two rows. Their conjecture remains open, but we show $f_H(n)=n^{1-o(1)}$ for every acyclic matrix $H$; and indeed there is a $0/1$-submatrix that is either $Ω(n)\times n^{1-o(1)}$ or $n^{1-o(1)}\times Ω(n)$.

Extremal convex polygons inscribed in a given convex polygon
A convex polygon $Q$ is inscribed in a convex polygon $P$ if every side of $P$ contains at least one vertex of $Q$. We present algorithms for finding a minimum area and a minimum perimeter convex polygon inscribed in any given convex $n$-gon in $O(n)$ and $O(n^3)$ time, respectively. We also investigate other variants of this problem.

A note on stability for maximal $F$-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Popielarz, Sahasrabudhe and Snyder in 2018 proved that maximal $K_{r+1}$-free graphs with $(1-\frac{1}{r})\frac{n^2}{2}-o(n^{\frac{r+1}{r}})$ edges contain a complete $r$-partite subgraph on $n-o(n)$ vertices. This was very recently extended to odd cycles in place of $K_3$ by Wang, Wang, Yang and Yuan. We further extend it to some other 3-chromatic graphs, and obtain some other stability results along the way.

Hamiltonicity of doubly semi-equivelar maps on the torus
Published • View Publication • BIB
The well-known twenty types of 2-uniform tilings of the plane give rise infinitely many doubly semi-equivelar maps on the torus. In this article, we show that every such doubly semi-equivelar map on the torus contains a Hamiltonian cycle. As a consequence, we establish the Nash-Williams conjecture for the graphs associated with these doubly semi-equivelar maps by showing that these graphs are either 3-connected or 4-connected.

Lipschitz geometry and combinatorics of abnormal surface germs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study outer Lipschitz geometry of real semialgebraic or, more general, definable in a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure over the reals, surface germs. In particular, any definable Hölder triangle is either Lipschitz normally embedded or contains some "abnormal" arcs. We show that abnormal arcs constitute finitely many "abnormal zones" in the space of all arcs, and investigate geometric and combinatorial properties of abnormal surface germs. We establish a strong relation between geometry and combinatorics of abnormal Hölder triangles.
Disjoint spread systems and fault location
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 30 (2016), 2011-2026 • View Publication • BIB
When $k$ factors each taking one of $v$ levels may affect the correctness or performance of a complex system, a test is selected by setting each factor to one of its levels and determining whether the system functions as expected (passes the test) or not (fails). In our setting, each test failure can be attributed to at least one faulty (factor, level) pair. A nonadaptive test suite is a selection of such tests to be executed in parallel. One goal is to minimize the number of tests in a test suite from which we can determine which (factor, level) pairs are faulty, if any. In this paper, we determine the number of tests needed to locate faults when exactly one (or at most one) pair is faulty. To do this, we address an equivalent problem, to determine how many set partitions of a set of size $N$ exist in which each partition contains $v$ classes and no two classes in the partitions are equal.

Cycles of arbitrary length in distance graphs on $\mathbb{F}_q^d$
Published • View Publication • BIB
For $E \subset {\Bbb F}_q^d$, $d \ge 2$, where ${\Bbb F}_q$ is the finite field with $q$ elements, we consider the distance graph ${\mathcal G}^{dist}_t(E)$, $t \not=0$, where the vertices are the elements of $E$, and two vertices $x$, $y$ are connected by an edge if $||x-y|| \equiv {(x_1-y_1)}^2+\dots+{(x_d-y_d)}^2=t$. We prove that if $|E| \ge C_k q^{\frac{d+2}{2}}$, then ${\mathcal G}^{dist}_t(E)$ contains a statistically correct number of cycles of length $k$. We are also going to consider the dot-product graph ${\mathcal G}^{prod}_t(E)$, $t \not=0$, where the vertices are the elements of $E$, and two vertices $x$, $y$ are connected by an edge if $x \cdot y \equiv x_1y_1+\dots+x_dy_d=t$. We obtain similar results in this case using more sophisticated methods necessitated by the fact that the function $x \cdot y$ is not translation invariant. The exponent $\frac{d+2}{2}$ is improved for sufficiently long cycles.
