The excluded minors for 2- and 3-regular matroids
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 163 (2023), 133-218 • View Publication • BIB
The class of 2-regular matroids is a natural generalisation of regular and near-regular matroids. We prove an excluded-minor characterisation for the class of 2-regular matroids. The class of 3-regular matroids coincides with the class of matroids representable over the Hydra-5 partial field, and the 3-connected matroids in the class with a $U_{2,5}$- or $U_{3,5}$-minor are precisely those with six inequivalent representations over GF(5). We also prove that an excluded minor for this class has at most 15 elements.

On the circuits of splitting matroids representable over GF(p)
Published • View Publication • BIB
We extend the splitting operation from binary matroids (Raghunathan et al., 1998) to $p$- matroids, where $p$-matroids refer to matroids representable over $GF(p).$ We also characterize circuits, bases, and independent sets of the resulting matroid. Sufficient conditions to yield Eulerian $p$-matroids from Eulerian and non-Eulerian $p$-matroids by applying the splitting operation are obtained. A class of connected $p$-matroids that gives connected $p$-matroids under the splitting operation is characterized.

Small cocircuits in minimally vertically $4$-connected matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Halin proved that every minimally $k$-connected graph has a vertex of degree $k$. More generally, does every minimally vertically $k$-connected matroid have a $k$-element cocircuit? Results of Murty and Wong give an affirmative answer when $k \le 3$. We show that every minimally vertically $4$-connected matroid with at least six elements has a $4$-element cocircuit, or a $5$-element cocircuit that contains a triangle, with the exception of a specific non-binary $9$-element matroid. Consequently, every minimally vertically $4$-connected binary matroid with at least six elements has a $4$-element cocircuit.

Matroids are not Ehrhart positive
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we disprove the conjectures asserting the positivity of the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of matroid polytopes by De Loera, Haws and Köppe (2007) and of generalized permutohedra by Castillo and Liu (2015). We prove constructively that for every $n\geq 19$ there exist connected matroids on $n$ elements that are not Ehrhart positive. Also, we prove that for every $k\geq 3$ there exist connected matroids of rank $k$ that are not Ehrhart positive. Our proofs rely on our previous results on the geometric interpretation of the operation of circuit-hyperplane relaxation and our formulas for the Ehrhart polynomials of hypersimplices and minimal matroids. This allows us to give a precise expression for the Ehrhart polynomials of all sparse paving matroids, a class of matroids which is conjectured to be predominant and which contains the counterexamples arising from our construction.

On matroid modularity and the coefficients of the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid
Following the work of Gao and Xie in [2], we state some properties of the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial of a matroid. We also give partial answers to a conjecture that states that regular connected matroids are non-degenerate. We link the degeneracy of a matroid to the inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial and we show that the Conjecture holds for modular matroids, by proving that degenerate modular matroids are not regular.
Elastic elements in 3-connected matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
It follows by Bixby's Lemma that if $e$ is an element of a $3$-connected matroid $M$, then either ${\rm co}(M\delete e)$, the cosimplification of $M\delete e$, or ${\rm si}(M/e)$, the simplification of $M/e$, is $3$-connected. A natural question to ask is whether $M$ has an element $e$ such that both ${\rm co}(M\delete e)$ and ${\rm si}(M/e)$ are $3$-connected. Calling such an element "elastic", in this paper we show that if $|E(M)|\ge 4$, then $M$ has at least four elastic elements provided $M$ has no $4$-element fans and, up to duality, $M$ has no $3$-separating set $S$ that is the disjoint union of a rank-$2$ subset and a corank-$2$ subset of $E(M)$ such that $M|S$ is isomorphic to a member or a single-element deletion of a member of a certain family of matroids.

A note on connectivity preserving splitting operation for matroids representable over $GF(p)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The splitting operation on a $p$-matroid does not necessarily preserve connectivity. It is observed that there exists a single element extension of the splitting matroid which is connected. In this paper, we define the element splitting operation on $p$-matroids which is a splitting operation followed by a single element extension. It is proved that element splitting operation on connected $p$-matroid yields a connected $p$-matroid. We give a sufficient condition to yield Eulerian $p$-matroids from Eulerian $p$-matroids under the element splitting operation. A sufficient condition to obtain hamiltonian $p$-matroid by applying element splitting operation on $p$-matroid is also provided.

On the Ehrhart Polynomial of Minimal Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide a formula for the Ehrhart polynomial of the connected matroid of size $n$ and rank $k$ with the least number of bases, also known as a minimal matroid. We prove that their polytopes are Ehrhart positive and $h^*$-real-rooted (and hence unimodal). We prove that the operation of circuit-hyperplane relaxation relates minimal matroids and matroid polytopes subdivisions, and also preserves Ehrhart positivity. We state two conjectures: that indeed all matroids are $h^*$-real-rooted, and that the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of a connected matroid of fixed rank and cardinality are bounded by those of the corresponding minimal matroid and the corresponding uniform matroid.

A note on the connectivity of 2-polymatroid minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
Brylawski and Seymour independently proved that if $M$ is a connected matroid with a connected minor $N$, and $e \in E(M) - E(N)$, then $M \backslash e$ or $M / e$ is connected having $N$ as a minor. This paper proves an analogous but somewhat weaker result for $2$-polymatroids. Specifically, if $M$ is a connected $2$-polymatroid with a proper connected minor $N$, then there is an element $e$ of $E(M) - E(N)$ such that $M \backslash e$ or $M / e$ is connected having $N$ as a minor. We also consider what can be said about the uniqueness of the way in which the elements of $E(M) - E(N)$ can be removed so that connectedness is always maintained.

Matroid connectivity and singularities of configuration hypersurfaces
Published in Lett. Math. Phys. 111,1 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
Consider a linear realization of a matroid over a field. One associates with it a configuration polynomial and a symmetric bilinear form with linear homogeneous coefficients. The corresponding configuration hypersurface and its non-smooth locus support the respective first and second degeneracy scheme of the bilinear form. We show that these schemes are reduced and describe the effect of matroid connectivity: for (2-)connected matroids, the configuration hypersurface is integral, and the second degeneracy scheme is reduced Cohen-Macaulay of codimension 3. If the matroid is 3-connected, then also the second degeneracy scheme is integral. In the process, we describe the behavior of configuration polynomials, forms and schemes with respect to various matroid constructions.

On $k$-Connected $Γ$-Extensions of Binary Matroids
Slater introduced the point-addition operation on graphs to classify 4-connected graphs. The $Γ$-extension operation on binary matroids is a generalization of the point-addition operation. In this paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions to preserve $k$-connectedness of a binary matroid under the $Γ$-extension operation. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition to get a connected matroid from a disconnected binary matroid using the $Γ$-extension operation.
On the structure of spikes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Spikes are an important class of 3-connected matroids. For an integer $r\geq 3$, there is a unique binary r-spike denoted by $Z_{r}$. When a circuit-hyperplane of $Z_{r}$ is relaxed, we obtain another spike and repeating this procedure will produce other non-binary spikes. The $es$-splitting operation on a binary spike of rank $r$, may not yield a spike. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the $es$-splitting operation to construct $Z_{r+1}$ directly from $Z_{r}$. Indeed, all binary spikes and many of non-binary spikes of each rank can be derived from the spike $Z_{3}$ by a sequence of The $es$-splitting operations and circuit-hyperplane relaxations.

$N$-detachable pairs in 3-connected matroids III: the theorem
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 153 (2022), 223-290 • View Publication • BIB
Let $M$ be a 3-connected matroid, and let $N$ be a 3-connected minor of $M$. A pair $\{x_1,x_2\} \subseteq E(M)$ is $N$-detachable if one of the matroids $M/x_1/x_2$ or $M \backslash x_1 \backslash x_2$ is both 3-connected and has an $N$-minor. This is the third and final paper in a series where we prove that if $|E(M)|-|E(N)| \ge 10$, then either $M$ has an $N$-detachable pair after possibly performing a single $Δ$-$Y$ or $Y$-$Δ$ exchange, or $M$ is essentially $N$ with a spike attached. Moreover, we describe the additional structures that arise if we require only that $|E(M)|-|E(N)| \ge 5$.

$N$-detachable pairs in 3-connected matroids II: life in $X$
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 149 (2021), 222-271 • View Publication • BIB
This is the second in a series of three papers where we describe the structures that arise when it is not possible to find an $N$-detachable pair in $M$. In the first paper in the series, we showed that, under mild assumptions, either $M$ has an $N$-detachable pair, $M$ has one of three particular 3-separators that can appear in a matroid with no N-detachable pairs, or there is a 3-separating set $X$ with certain strong structural properties. In this paper, we analyse matroids with such a structured set $X$, and prove that they have either an $N$-detachable pair, or one of five particular 3-separators that can appear in a matroid with no $N$-detachable pairs.

$N$-detachable pairs in 3-connected matroids I: unveiling $X$

Let $M$ be a 3-connected matroid, and let $N$ be a 3-connected minor of $M$. We say that a pair $\{x_1,x_2\} \subseteq E(M)$ is $N$-detachable if one of the matroids $M/x_1/x_2$ or $M \backslash x_1 \backslash x_2$ is both 3-connected and has an $N$-minor. This is the first in a series of three papers where we describe the structures that arise when it is not possible to find an $N$-detachable pair in $M$. In this paper, we prove that if $M$ has no $N$-detachable pairs, then either $M$ has a 3-separating set, which we call $X$, with certain strong structural properties, or $M$ has one of three particular 3-separators that can appear in a matroid with no $N$-detachable pairs.

On perturbations of highly connected dyadic matroids
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 22 (2018), 513-542 • View Publication • BIB
Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle [3] announced the following result: let $q = p^k$ be a prime power, and let $\mathcal{M}$ be a proper minor-closed class of $\mathrm{GF}(q)$-representable matroids, which does not contain $\mathrm{PG}(r-1,p)$ for sufficiently high $r$. There exist integers $k, t$ such that every vertically $k$-connected matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ is a rank-$(\leq t)$ perturbation of a frame matroid or the dual of a frame matroid over $\mathrm{GF}(q)$. They further announced a characterization of the perturbations through the introduction of subfield templates and frame templates. We show a family of dyadic matroids that form a counterexample to this result. We offer several weaker conjectures to replace the ones in [3], discuss consequences for some published papers, and discuss the impact of these new conjectures on the structure of frame templates.

Triangle-roundedness in matroids
Published in Discrete Mathematics 343 (2020) 111680 • View Publication • BIB
A matroid $N$ is said to be triangle-rounded in a class of matroids $\mathcal{M}$ if each $3$-connected matroid $M\in \mathcal{M}$ with a triangle $T$ and an $N$-minor has an $N$-minor with $T$ as triangle. Reid gave a result useful to identify such matroids as stated next: suppose that $M$ is a binary $3$-connected matroid with a $3$-connected minor $N$, $T$ is a triangle of $M$ and $e\in T\cap E(N)$; then $M$ has a $3$-connected minor $M'$ with an $N$-minor such that $T$ is a triangle of $M'$ and $|E(M')|\le |E(N)|+2$. We strengthen this result by dropping the condition that such element $e$ exists and proving that there is a $3$-connected minor $M'$ of $M$ with an $N$-minor $N'$ such that $T$ is a triangle of $M'$ and $E(M')-E(N')\subseteq T$. This result is extended to the non-binary case and, as an application, we prove that $M(K_5)$ is triangle-rounded in the class of the regular matroids.

A splitter theorem for 3-connected 2-polymatroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Seymour's Splitter Theorem is a basic inductive tool for dealing with $3$-connected matroids. This paper proves a generalization of that theorem for the class of $2$-polymatroids. Such structures include matroids, and they model both sets of points and lines in a projective space and sets of edges in a graph. A series compression in such a structure is an analogue of contracting an edge of a graph that is in a series pair. A $2$-polymatroid $N$ is an s-minor of a $2$-polymatroid $M$ if $N$ can be obtained from $M$ by a sequence of contractions, series compressions, and dual-contractions, where the last are modified deletions. The main result proves that if $M$ and $N$ are $3$-connected $2$-polymatroids such that $N$ is an s-minor of $M$, then $M$ has a $3$-connected s-minor $M'$ that has an s-minor isomorphic to $N$ and has $|E(M)| - 1$ elements unless $M$ is a whirl or the cycle matroid of a wheel. In the exceptional case, such an $M'$ can be found with $|E(M)| - 2$ elements.

A notion of minor-based matroid connectivity
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics Volume 100, September 2018, Pages 163-178 • View Publication • BIB
For a matroid $N$, a matroid $M$ is $N$-connected if every two elements of $M$ are in an $N$-minor together. Thus a matroid is connected if and only if it is $U_{1,2}$-connected. This paper proves that $U_{1,2}$ is the only connected matroid $N$ such that if $M$ is $N$-connected with $|E(M)| > |E(N)|$, then $M \backslash e$ or $M / e$ is $N$-connected for all elements $e$. Moreover, we show that $U_{1,2}$ and $M(\mathcal{W}_2)$ are the only connected matroids $N$ such that, whenever a matroid has an $N$-minor using $\{e,f\}$ and an $N$-minor using $\{f,g\}$, it also has an $N$-minor using $\{e,g\}$. Finally, we show that $M$ is $U_{0,1} \oplus U_{1,1}$-connected if and only if every clonal class of $M$ is trivial.

A splitter theorem for connected clutters
A clutter consists of a finite set and a collection of pairwise incomparable subsets. Clutters are natural generalisations of matroids, and they have similar operations of deletion and contraction. We introduce a notion of connectivity for clutters that generalises that of connectivity for matroids. We prove a splitter theorem for connected clutters that has the splitter theorem for connected matroids as a special case: if $M$ and $N$ are connected clutters, and $N$ is a proper minor of $M$, then there is an element in $E(M)$ that can be deleted or contracted to produce a connected clutter with $N$ as a minor.
