The Topological Tverberg Problem and winding numbers
The Topological Tverberg Theorem claims that any continuous map of a (q-1)(d+1)-simplex to \R^d identifies points from q disjoint faces. (This has been proved for affine maps, for d=1, and if q is a prime power, but not yet in general.) The Topological Tverberg Theorem can be restricted to maps of the d-skeleton of the simplex. We further show that it is equivalent to a ``Winding Number Conjecture'' that concerns only maps of the (d-1)-skeleton of a (q-1)(d+1)-simplex to \R^d. ``Many Tverberg partitions'' arise if and only if there are ``many q-winding partitions.'' The d=2 case of the Winding Number Conjecture is a problem about drawings of the complete graphs K_{3q-2} in the plane. We investigate graphs that are minimal with respect to the winding number condition.
The Positive Bergman Complex of an Oriented Matroid

We study the positive Bergman complex B+(M) of an oriented matroid M, which is a certain subcomplex of the Bergman complex B(M) of the underlying unoriented matroid. The positive Bergman complex is defined so that given a linear ideal I with associated oriented matroid M_I, the positive tropical variety associated to I is equal to the fan over B+(M_I). Our main result is that a certain "fine" subdivision of B+(M) is a geometric realization of the order complex of the proper part of the Las Vergnas face lattice of M. It follows that B+(M) is homeomorphic to a sphere. For the oriented matroid of the complete graph K_n, we show that the face poset of the "coarse" subdivision of B+(K_n) is dual to the face poset of the associahedron A_{n-2}, and we give a formula for the number of fine cells within a coarse cell.
On the Topological Tverberg Theorem
We introduce a new ``Winding Number Conjecture'' about maps from the $(d-1)$-skeleton of the $((d+1)(q-1))$-simplex into $\real^d$. This conjecture is equivalent to the Topological Tverberg Theorem. Furthermore, many statements about the Topological Tverberg Theorem transfer to the Winding Number Conjecture, for example all currently proven cases of the Topological Tverberg Theorem as well as Sierksma's conjecture about the number of Tverberg partitions.
In the case $d=2$, the Winding Number Conjecture is a statement about complete graphs: It claims that in every image of $K_{3(q-1)+1}$ in the plane either $q-1$ triangles wind around one vertex or $q-2$ triangles wind around the intersection of two edges, where the triangles, edges and vertices are disjoint. We examine which other graphs have this property and find the minimal subgraph of $K_7$ having this property.

We find the Ramsey number of a cycle vs. a complete graph when the order of the cycle is at least 4 times as large as the order of the complete graph. This partially confirms a conjecture of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp made in 1978.
Subdominant matroid ultrametrics

Given a matroid M on the ground set E, the Bergman fan B(M), or space of M-ultrametrics, is a polyhedral complex in R^E which arises in several different areas, such as tropical algebraic geometry, dynamical systems, and phylogenetics. Motivated by the phylogenetic situation, we study the following problem: Given a point w in R^E, we wish to find an M-ultrametric which is closest to it in the l_infty metric.
The solution to this problem follows easily from the existence of the subdominant M-ultrametric: a componentwise maximum M-ultrametric which is componentwise smaller than w. A procedure for computing it is given, which brings together the points of view of matroid theory and tropical geometry.
When the matroid in question is the graphical matroid of the complete graph K_n, the Bergman fan B(K_n) parameterizes the equidistant phylogenetic trees with n leaves. In this case, our results provide a conceptual explanation for Chepoi and Fichet's method for computing the tree that most closely matches measured data.
Improved bounds for the crossing numbers of K_m,n and K_n

It has been long--conjectured that the crossing number cr(K_m,n) of the complete bipartite graph K_m,n equals the Zarankiewicz Number Z(m,n):= floor((m-1)/2) floor(m/2) floor((n-1)/2) floor(n/2). Another long--standing conjecture states that the crossing number cr(K_n) of the complete graph K_n equals Z(n):= floor(n/2) floor((n-1)/2) floor((n-2)/2) floor((n-3)/2)/4. In this paper we show the following improved bounds on the asymptotic ratios of these crossing numbers and their conjectured values:
(i) for each fixed m >= 9, lim_{n->infty} cr(K_m,n)/Z(m,n) >= 0.83m/(m-1);
(ii) lim_{n->infty} cr(K_n,n)/Z(n,n) >= 0.83; and
(iii) lim_{n->infty} cr(K_n)/Z(n) >= 0.83.
The previous best known lower bounds were 0.8m/(m-1), 0.8, and 0.8, respectively. These improved bounds are obtained as a consequence of the new bound cr(K_{7,n}) >= 2.1796n^2 - 4.5n. To obtain this improved lower bound for cr(K_{7,n}), we use some elementary topological facts on drawings of K_{2,7} to set up a quadratic program on 6! variables whose minimum p satisfies cr(K_{7,n}) >= (p/2)n^2 - 4.5n, and then use state--of--the--art quadratic optimization techniques combined with a bit of invariant theory of permutation groups to show that p >= 4.3593.
Generalized de Bruijn Cycles

For a set of integers $I$, we define a $q$-ary $I$-cycle to be a assignment of the symbols 1 through $q$ to the integers modulo $q^n$ so that every word appears on some translate of $I$. This definition generalizes that of de Bruijn cycles, and opens up a multitude of questions. We address the existence of such cycles, discuss ``reduced'' cycles (ones in which the all-zeroes string need not appear), and provide general bounds on the shortest sequence which contains all words on some translate of $I$. We also prove a variant on recent results concerning decompositions of complete graphs into cycles and employ it to resolve the case of $|I|=2$ completely.

Given a graph $G$, we consider a game where two players, $A$ and $B$, alternatingly color edges of $G$ in red and in blue respectively. Let $l(G)$ be the maximum number of moves in which $B$ is able to keep the red and the blue subgraphs isomorphic, if $A$ plays optimally to destroy the isomorphism. This value is a lower bound for the duration of any avoidance game on $G$ under the assumption that $B$ plays optimally. We prove that if $G$ is a path or a cycle of odd length $n$, then $Ω(\log n)\le l(G)\le O(\log^2 n)$. The lower bound is based on relations with Ehrenfeucht games from model theory. We also consider complete graphs and prove that $l(K_n)=O(1)$.

The basic functional equations for connected and 2-connnected graphs can be traced back to the statistical physicists Mayer and Husimi. They play an essential role in establishing rigorously the virial expansion for imperfect gases. We survey this approach and inspired by these equations, we investigate the problem of enumerating some classes of connected graphs all of whose blocks are contained in a given class B. Included are the species of Husimi graphs (B = "complete graphs"), cacti (B = "unoriented cycles"), and oriented cacti (B = "oriented cycles"). For each of these, we consider the question of their labelled or unlabelled enumeration and of their molecular expansion, according (or not) to their block-size distributions.

We study the Bergman complex B(M) of a matroid M: a polyhedral complex which arises in algebraic geometry, but which we describe purely combinatorially. We prove that a natural subdivision of the Bergman complex of M is a geometric realization of the order complex of its lattice of flats. In addition, we show that the Bergman fan B'(K_n) of the graphical matroid of the complete graph K_n is homeomorphic to the space of phylogenetic trees T_n.

Let P be a random $d$-dimensional 0/1-polytope with $n(d)$ vertices, and denote by $φ_k(P)$ the \emph{$k$-face density} of $P$, i.e., the quotient of the number of $k$-dimensional faces of $P$ and $\binom{n(d)}{k+1}$. For each $k\ge 2$, we establish the existence of a sharp threshold for the $k$-face density and determine the values of the threshold numbers $τ_k$ such that, for all $ε>0$, $$ E(φ_k(P)) = \begin{cases} 1-o(1) & \text{if $n(d)\le 2^{(τ_k-ε)d}$ for all $d$} o(1) & \text{if $n(d)\ge 2^{(τ_k+ε)d}$ for all $d$} \end{cases} $$ holds for the expected value of $φ_k(P)$. The threshold for $k=1$ has recently been determined in \texttt{math.CO/0306246}. In particular, these results indicate that the high face densities often encountered in polyhedral combinatorics (e.g., for the cut-polytopes of complete graphs) should be considered more as a phenomenon of the general geometry of 0/1-polytopes than as a feature of the special combinatorics of the underlying problems.

An isometric path between two vertices in a graph $G$ is a shortest path joining them. The isometric path number of $G$, denoted by $\ip(G)$, is the minimum number of isometric paths needed to cover all vertices of $G$. In this paper, we determine exact values of isometric path numbers of complete $r$-partite graphs and Cartesian products of 2 or 3 complete graphs.

For a graph G and integer r\geq 1 we denote the collection of independent r-sets of G by I^{(r)}(G). If v\in V(G) then I_v^{(r)}(G) is the collection of all independent r-sets containing v. A graph G, is said to be r-EKR, for r\geq 1, iff no intersecting family A\subseteq I^{(r)}(G) is larger than max_{v\in V(G)}|I^{(r)}_v(G)|. There are various graphs which are known to have this property: the empty graph of order n\geq 2r (this is the celebrated Erdos-Ko-Rado theorem), any disjoint union of at least r copies of K_t for t\geq 2, and any cycle. In this paper we show how these results can be extended to other classes of graphs via a compression proof technique.
In particular we show that any disjoint union of at least r complete graphs, each of order at least two, is r-EKR. We also show that paths are r-EKR for all r\geq 1.

For a graph G and integer r \geq 1 we denote the family of independent r-sets of V(G) by I^{(r)}(G). A graph G is said to be r-EKR if no intersecting subfamily of I^{(r)}(G) is larger than the largest such family all of whose members contain some fixed v \in V(G). If this inequality is always strict, then G is said to be strictly r-EKR. We show that if a graph G is r-EKR then its lexicographic product with any complete graph is r-EKR.
For any graph G, we define μ(G) to be the minimum size of a maximal independent vertex set. We conjecture that, if 1 \leq r \leq 1/2μ(G), then G is r-EKR, and if r<1/2μ(G), then G is strictly r-EKR. This is known to be true when G is an empty graph, a cycle, a path or the disjoint union of complete graphs. We show that it is also true when G is the disjoint union of a pair of complete multipartite graphs.

Let $m_{12}$, $m_{13}$, ..., $m_{n-1,n}$ be the slopes of the $\binom{n}{2}$ lines connecting $n$ points in general position in the plane. The ideal $I_n$ of all algebraic relations among the $m_{ij}$ defines a configuration space called the {\em slope variety of the complete graph}. We prove that $I_n$ is reduced and Cohen-Macaulay, give an explicit Gröbner basis for it, and compute its Hilbert series combinatorially. We proceed chiefly by studying the associated Stanley-Reisner simplicial complex, which has an intricate recursive structure. In addition, we are able to answer many questions about the geometry of the slope variety by translating them into purely combinatorial problems concerning enumeration of trees.
The Brown-Colbourn conjecture on zeros of reliability polynomials is false

We give counterexamples to the Brown-Colbourn conjecture on reliability polynomials, in both its univariate and multivariate forms. The multivariate Brown-Colbourn conjecture is false already for the complete graph K_4. The univariate Brown-Colbourn conjecture is false for certain simple planar graphs obtained from K_4 by parallel and series expansion of edges. We show, in fact, that a graph has the multivariate Brown-Colbourn property if and only if it is series-parallel.
On a hypergraph Turan problem of Frankl

Let $C^{2k}_r$ be the $2k$-uniform hypergraph obtained by letting $P_1,...,P_r$ be pairwise disjoint sets of size $k$ and taking as edges all sets $P_i \cup P_j$ with $i \neq j$. This can be thought of as the `$k$-expansion' of the complete graph $K_r$: each vertex has been replaced with a set of size $k$. We determine the exact Turan number of $C^{2k}_3$ and the corresponding extremal hypergraph, thus confirming a conjecture of Frankl. Sidorenko has given an upper bound of $(r-2) / (r-1)$ for the Turán density of $C^{2k}_r$ for any $r$, and a construction establishing a matching lower bound when $r$ is of the form $2^p + 1$. We show that when $r = 2^p + 1$, any $C^4_r$-free hypergraph of density $(r-2)/(r-1) - o(1)$ looks approximately like Sidorenko's construction. On the other hand, when $r$ is not of this form, we show that corresponding constructions do not exist and improve the upper bound on the Turán density of $C^4_r$ to $(r-2)/(r-1) - c(r)$, where $c(r)$ is a constant depending only on $r$.
The backbone of our arguments is a strategy of first proving approximate structure theorems, and then showing that any imperfections in the structure must lead to a suboptimal configuration. The tools for its realisation draw on extremal graph theory, linear algebra, the Kruskal-Katona theorem and properties of Krawtchouck polynomials.

Let $H$ be a hypergraph. For a $k$-edge coloring $c : E(H) \to \{1,...,k\}$ let $f(H,c)$ be the number of components in the subhypergraph induced by the color class with the least number of components. Let $f_k(H)$ be the maximum possible value of $f(H,c)$ ranging over all $k$-edge colorings of $H$. If $H$ is the complete graph $K_n$ then, trivially, $f_1(K_n)=f_2(K_n)=1$. In this paper we prove that for $n \geq 6$, $f_3(K_n)=\lfloor n/6 \rfloor+1$ and supply close upper and lower bounds for $f_k(K_n)$ in case $k \geq 4$. Several results concerning the value of $f_k(K_n^r)$, where $K_n^r$ is the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices, are also established.

We obtain sharp bounds for the number of n--cycles in a finite graph as a function of the number of edges, and prove that the complete graph is optimal in more ways than could be imagined. We prove sharp estimates on both the sum of k-th powers of the coordinates and the Lk norm subject to the constraints that the sum of squares of the coordinates is fixed, and that the sum of the coordinates vanishes.
