On weighted partial triangulations of convex polygons
We study the problem of sampling weighted partial triangulations of a convex polygon. We consider the distribution where each partial triangulation $σ$ is chosen with probability proportional to $λ^{|σ|}$, where $λ>0$ is a model parameter and $|σ|$ denotes the number of diagonals in $σ$. This model belongs to a broad class of weighted geometric partition problems that include lattice triangulations and dyadic tilings, and is closely related to several classical combinatorial structures, including the full triangulations of a convex polygon and the associated Catalan structures. While prior work has largely focused on Markov chain approaches, often only providing suboptimal mixing time bounds, we provide a direct efficient method for exact sampling. Our main result is a randomized algorithm that outputs an exact sample from the target distribution in expected time $O\big((n\sqrtλ+1)\log n\big)$ for all sufficiently large $n$. This provides a nearly optimal sampling algorithm for weighted partial triangulations, offering a compelling alternative to Markov chain-based techniques.
Burnside process on parking functions and Dyck paths
Let $G$ be a finite group acting on a finite set $X$. This group action splits $X$ into disjoint orbits. The Burnside process is a Markov chain on $X$ which has a uniform stationary distribution when the chain is projected to orbits. We initiate the study of the Burnside process on Catalan structures. We consider two special cases: the first where the state space is the set of parking functions of length $n$ and $G = S_n$ is the symmetric group on $[n]$, such that $G$ acts by permuting coordinates, and the second where the state space is the set of labeled Dyck paths of length $2n$ and $G = S_n$ acts by permuting labels. The resulting Burnside processes give novel algorithms for sampling, respectively, an increasing parking function and a Dyck path approximately uniformly at random. Our main result shows that both processes are rapidly mixing, with mixing times upper bounded by $O(n \log n)$. As an application, we show how our Burnside process can be used to sample triangulations of an $(n+2)$-gon approximately uniformly at random.
Combinatorial study of the q-Catalan triangle and its generalizations
We announce a series of results on the combinatorial study of the q-Catalan triangle (C_{n,k}(q)), defined by C_{n,0}(q)=q^{n(n-1)/2} and C_{n,k}(q)=C_{n,k-1}(q)+q^{n-k-1}C_{n-1,k}(q). We establish combinatorial interpretations via a universal combinatorial family of seven components: four families of pattern-avoiding permutations weighted by inversion or co-inversion statistics, Dyck paths, binary words and triangulations. We introduce the mirror polynomial C-tilde_{n,k}(q)=q^{n(n-1)/2}C_{n,k}(q^{-1}), prove its dual recurrence and co-inversion interpretation. The q,p-Catalan triangle and a multivariate generalization opening the way to cyclotomic q-analogues are introduced. Theorems on the q-Catalan triangle via 312-avoiding permutations and the mirror recurrence are proved completely here. This is the first paper of series W0-W5 on classical and q-deformed interpretations of the Catalan triangle.
Anchored Dyck Paths
We answer a question of Simental by providing a combinatorial interpretation of a formula which generalizes rational Catalan numbers and which appears in the study of Springer fibers. We provide an interpretation in terms of binary necklaces as well as anchored Dyck paths.
Dyck Symmetric Functions and Applications to \(q,t\)-Catalan Polynomials
This paper develops three related combinatorial results for Dyck-type sequences. First, it constructs a row-insertion algorithm for dual Dyck sequences and extends it to Dyck tableaux. This construction gives a weight-preserving bijection between dual Dyck factorizations and pairs consisting of a Dyck tableau and a semistandard Young tableau of the same shape. As a consequence, the associated dual Dyck symmetric functions are Schur-positive, and the corresponding affine Dyck symmetric functions have the conjugate-shape Schur expansion.
Second, it applies these Dyck symmetric functions to the \(q,t\)-Catalan polynomial. It gives a two-column tableau formula for \(C_n(q,t)\), expressing it as a sum over Dyck \(m\)-skeletons and at-most-two-column Dyck tableaux with summands involving two-variable Schur functions.
Third, it develops a Dyck-skeleton formula for the deficit range \(\defc\le 2n-8\). Full and special Dyck skeletons, together with local \(\mathrm{East}\), \(\mathrm{West}\), \(\mathrm{up}\), and \(\mathrm{down}\) moves, organize the low-area half of each low-deficit slice into skeleton-indexed strings. The \(q,t\)-symmetry of \(C_n(q,t)\) supplies the complementary high-area half in the resulting interval formula.
The Distribution of the Deepest Leaves in Binary Trees
We study the extreme local structure of plane binary trees through the distribution of leaves at maximum depth. We first address two basic questions: (i) the asymptotic probability that exactly two leaves occur at the deepest level, and (ii) the asymptotic mean number of leaves at that level. These problems lead to generating functions coupled with the Catalan iteration $I_{k+1}(z)=1+zI_k(z)^2$ through quasi-logistic recurrences. We show that both associated series have dominant singularity $ρ=1/4$ and admit square-root singular expansions. The singular terms are obtained through a three-zone dominated-convergence analysis of the critical scaling regime of the truncation error.
We then extend the framework to derive the full limiting distribution of the number of deepest leaves. Enumerating trees with exactly $2m$ deepest leaves yields a hierarchy of differential equations that reduces to successive polynomial integrations. Encoding these parameters into a bivariate generating function transforms the nonlinear dynamics back into the Catalan recurrence. Using continuous iteration theory and the Fatou coordinate associated with an Abel equation, we obtain a functional equation characterizing the distribution.
Finally, singularity analysis implies a strict exponential tail: the probability of having $2m$ deepest leaves satisfies $κ[m]\sim 4^{-m+1}$. Numerical evaluation gives an average number of deepest leaves equal to $\hatκ\approx 2.8037$, while the probability of exactly two deepest leaves is $κ\approx 0.7009$.
The Ballot Event for Two-Player Coupon Collection: A Renewal--Catalan Asymptotic
We study the two-player coupon-collector competition in which two independent collectors draw one coupon each per round from a set of $d$ equally likely coupon types. Myers and Wilf gave finite formulae for several two-player events and explicitly left open the ballot-type problem of finding the probability that the ultimate winner was never behind. We prove that this probability satisfies $$ b_d \sim \frac{2}{d}, \qquad d\to\infty .$$ The proof uses a renewal decomposition at the tie boundary. The first one-sided tie-break has an explicit entrance distribution; its level, scaled by $d^{1/2}$, converges to a Rayleigh law; and, after the break, the leader's survival probability is governed by a Catalan, or gambler's-ruin, harmonic. The main estimate shows that the accumulated defect of this comparison harmonic in the exact simultaneous-round chain is negligible.
Enumerating Multi-Operator Monomials in Commutative and Noncommutative Settings
We study enumeration problems for multi-operator monomials generated from one indeterminate by an associative multiplication together with finitely many unary operators. We consider four regimes, according to whether multiplication is commutative and whether the unary operators commute. In the case where the unary operators do not commute, we obtain explicit multigraded generating functions and coefficient formulas, including a multinomial refinement of the Narayana numbers, together with interpretations in terms of rooted trees, restricted lattice paths, and binary trees. When the unary operators commute, we derive canonical representatives and effective recurrences, with corresponding monotonicity conditions in the combinatorial models. When multiplication is commutative, the sequence decomposition is replaced by a multiset decomposition, leading to exp--log generating functions and Euler-transform recurrences. In special cases, the resulting sequences recover classical families including the Catalan numbers, the small Schröder numbers, and rooted-tree numbers.
Continued fractions related to Narayana polynomials
The generating functions of some sequences of Catalan numbers and Narayana polynomials have simple expansions as continued fractions of Jacobi type. We give an overview of these facts and prove analogous results for q-Narayana polynomials at q=-1.
Large deviation principles for pattern-avoiding permutations, and limit shapes for constrained Mallows permutations
We study Mallows random permutations conditioned to avoid a given pattern $α$ of length~$3$. When the bias parameter is of the form $e^{β/n}$, we prove that these permutations converge to a non-trivial explicit deterministic permuton that depends on the pattern $α$ and on the parameter $β$. Along the way, we provide parametrizations for $α$-avoiding permutons, and establish a large deviation principle for uniform $α$-avoiding permutations. As a byproduct of the proof, we also obtain asymptotic estimates of two versions of $q$-Catalan numbers in the regime $q=e^{β/n}$.
On 132-Avoiding Permutations with an Adjacency Constraint
We study permutations in $S_n$ that simultaneously avoid the pattern $132$ and satisfy the adjacency bound $|π_{i+1} - π_i| \leq m$ for all $i$, denoting their number by $A_n^{(m)}$. This combination of a global pattern restriction and a local bounded-difference condition produces a strong structural collapse: whereas unrestricted $132$-avoiding permutations are counted by the Catalan numbers with exponential growth rate $4$, the adjacency constraint forces the maximum element $n$ to occupy only positions in $\{1, 2, \ldots, m\} \cup \{n\}$. We give a complete solution for $m = 2$ by partitioning the class according to the position of the maximum element. This yields explicit recurrences and a rational generating function, from which we derive asymptotic growth of the form $A_n^{(2)} \sim C α^n$ with $α\approx 1.4656$. We conjecture that for each fixed $m$, the class admits a finite-state structural decomposition leading to linear recurrences with constant coefficients and rational generating functions, with growth constants increasing to $4$.
The inversion number statistic for inversion sequences
Inversion sequences, also known as subexcedant sequences, form a fundamental class of objects in enumerative combinatorics. In this paper, we study the joint distribution of five statistics on inversion sequences. While several statistics on inversion sequences have been extensively investigated, our contribution is to introduce the inversion number statistic, originally defined for permutations, into the context of inversion sequences. As special cases, we recover classical permutation statistics, including the Stirling, Mahonian and Eulerian distributions, as well as the Catalan and Narayana numbers. Somewhat unexpectedly, our specializations also include the number of involutions in the symmetric group.
Our study arises from a $q$-analog of Comtet's expansion formula obtained by substituting the classical derivative operator $D$ with the $q$-derivative operator $D_q$.

For each finite configuration of distinct points in the plane, there is an associated lattice of noncrossing partitions. When these points form the vertices of a convex polygon, the result is the classical noncrossing partition lattice, which is enumerated by the Catalan numbers and satisfies many other useful properties. In this article, we examine three variations of this lattice which arise when the starting configuration is allowed to have points on the sides of a convex polygon rather than just the vertex set.
Analytic and combinatorial approaches to a weighted Catalan sum
We analyze a weighted convolution of Catalan numbers $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n} \binom{2k}{k}\binom{2(n-k)}{n-k} a^k = \sum_{k=0}^{n} (k+1)(n-k+1) C_k C_{n-k} a^k, $$ emphasizing its combinatorial, analytic, and probabilistic aspects. We derive a compact closed form in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1(-n,1/2;1;1-a)$, valid for all complex values of the parameter $a$. The sum admits a natural interpretation in terms of return probabilities of independent simple random walks, linking weighted convolutions of central binomial coefficients to classical probability theory. Furthermore, a refinement via Narayana numbers highlights the contribution of peak distributions in pairs of Dyck paths, providing a finer combinatorial perspective. An integral representation is also proposed, suggesting a connection with orthogonal polynomials and spectral measures. Our approach illustrates how analytic and probabilistic techniques complement combinatorial reasoning in evaluating complex sums.
On Semisymmetric Height and a Multidimensional Generalization of Weighted Catalan Numbers
Weighted Catalan numbers are a class of weighted sums over Dyck paths. Well-studied for their arithmetic properties and applications to enumerative combinatorics, these numbers were recently generalized to the setting of $k$-dimensional Catalan numbers for $k \geq 2$. In this paper, we introduce the $k$-dimensional semisymmetric weighted Catalan numbers ($k$-dimensional SSWCNs), an alternative $k$-dimensional generalization, along with their variant, the $k$-dimensional $u$-bounded semisymmetric weighted Catalan numbers ($k$-dimensional $u$-bounded SSWCNs). We define these two classes of numbers using the notion of semisymmetric height, a new statistic on points in $\mathbb{Z}^k_{\geq 0}$ motivated by geometric symmetries of $k$-dimensional analogs of Dyck paths and of the fundamental Weyl chamber of type $A_{k-1}$. For our main results, we prove the eventual periodicity of $k$-dimensional SSWCNs and their $u$-bounded variants modulo a suitable integer $m$, and we derive formulas for several classes of $k$-dimensional $u$-bounded SSWCNs. Additionally, using semisymmetric height, we derive novel analogs in the $k$-dimensional setting of the integer sequence counting Dyck paths by height and of the Narayana numbers. We conclude the paper with a future direction for generalizing weighted Catalan numbers to the $k$-dimensional setting.

Using generalized binomial coefficient identities and some results of John Dougall, we derive some families of series involving the cubes of Catalan numbers. We also establish a family of series containing fourth powers of Catalan numbers. Finally, we find a generalization of the Bauer series for $1/π$ and obtain some Ramanujan-like series for $1/π^2$ and~$1/π^3$.
Translation Monoids and Recursive Evaluation in Finite Binary Algebras
Let \(A=(A,\star)\) be a finite binary algebra, not necessarily associative. For each \(n\geq 1\), every full binary bracketing on \(x_1,\dots,x_n\) determines an \(n\)-ary term operation on \(A\), and hence an evaluation word obtained by listing its values on \(A^n\) in lexicographic order. This produces an \(m^n\times C_{n-1}\) array, where \(m=|A|\) and \(C_{n-1}\) is the \((n-1)\)st Catalan number. We show that the recursive structure of these arrays is governed by the translation monoid \[ T(A)=\langle L_a,R_a:a\in A\rangle\leq A^A, \qquad L_a(x)=a\star x,\quad R_a(x)=x\star a. \] More precisely, context maps arising from subterms are exactly the elements of \(T(A)\), so every element of the translation monoid occurs as a recursive block map. We also prove that rank defines a natural chain of two-sided ideals in \(T(A)\), that the minimum-rank elements form a minimal nonempty two-sided ideal, and that Green's \(\mathcal J\)-classes are contained in rank layers. Finally, we show by example that equal rank does not determine the \(\mathcal J\)-class in general.

Pascal, Catalan, Motzkin triangles and tensor product multiplicities
The main purpose of this note is to provide an elementary discussion of some simple triangles of integer numbers in particular through their connections with representation theory of $sl_2$. The triangles under consideration are the Catalan triangle and the Motzkin triangle together with their generalisations that we introduce here. We advocate the point of view that these triangles are given by the well-known and classical Pascal rule starting from a well-chosen initial condition. We give an elementary derivation of the fact that the numbers in these triangles are multiplicities appearing in tensor products of $sl_2$-representations and that they are simply expressed as a difference of generalised binomial coefficients. We also take the opportunity to discuss the ``sum of squares'' phenomenon that happens in these triangles through the lense of representation theory.
Promotion and rowmotion in rational Catalan combinatorics
We study four bijections, which are promotion, evacuation, rowmotion, and rowvacuation, on generalized Dyck paths in rational Catalan combinatorics. We define the maps on generalized Dyck paths, which have their origins in maps on Dyck paths and non-crossing partitions. They include rotation, Kreweras complement map, Simion--Ullman involution on non-crossing partitions, and Lalanne--Kreweras involution on Dyck paths. These maps have an expression in terms of the four combinatorial bijections. By extending the bijection studied by D. Armstrong, C. Stump, and H. Thomas on one hand, and the correspondence of RSK type studied by B. Adenbaum and S. Elizalde on the other, we present the equivalence between the two bijections, promotion and rowmotion, on generalized Dyck paths through these bijection and correspondence. For this purpose, we provide an alternative description of the correspondence of RSK type in terms of Dyck tilings.
