Combinatoric results for graphical enumeration and the higher Catalan numbers
We summarize some combinatoric problems solved by the higher Catalan numbers. These problems are generalizations of the combinatoric problems solved by the Catalan numbers. The generating function of the higher Catalan numbers appeared recently as an auxiliary function in enumerating maps and explicit computations of the asymptotic expansion of the partition function of random matrices in the unitary ensemble case. We give combinatoric proofs of the formulas for the number of genus 0 and genus 1 maps.

Mixed powers of generating functions

Given an integer m>=1, let || || be a norm in R^{m+1} and let S denote the set of points with nonnegative coordinates in the unit sphere with respect to this norm. Consider for each 1<= j<= m a function f_j(z) that is analytic in an open neighborhood of the point z=0 in the complex plane and with possibly negative Taylor coefficients. Given a vector n=(n_0,...,n_m) with nonnegative integer coefficients, we develop a method to systematically associate a parameter-varying integral to study the asymptotic behavior of the coefficient of z^{n_0} of the Taylor series of (f_1(z))^{n_1}...(f_m(z))^{n_m}, as ||n|| tends to infinity. The associated parameter-varying integral has a phase term with well specified properties that make the asymptotic analysis of the integral amenable to saddle-point methods: for many directions d in S, these methods ensure uniform asymptotic expansions for the Taylor coefficient of z^{n_0} of (f_1(z))^{n_1}...(f_m(z))^{n_m}, provided that n/||n|| stays sufficiently close to d as ||n|| blows up to infinity. Our method finds applications in studying the asymptotic behavior of the coefficients of a certain multivariable generating functions as well as in problems related to the Lagrange inversion formula for instance in the context random planar maps.

On asymptotics, Stirling numbers, Gamma function and polylogs
We apply the Euler--Maclaurin formula to find the asymptotic expansion of the sums $\sum_{k=1}^n (\log k)^p / k^q$, ~$\sum k^q (\log k)^p$, ~$\sum (\log k)^p /(n-k)^q$, ~$\sum 1/k^q (\log k)^p $ in closed form to arbitrary order ($p,q \in\N$). The expressions often simplify considerably and the coefficients are recognizable constants. The constant terms of the asymptotics are either $ζ^{(p)}(\pm q)$ (first two sums), 0 (third sum) or yield novel mathematical constants (fourth sum). This allows numerical computation of $ζ^{(p)}(\pm q)$ faster than any current software. One of the constants also appears in the expansion of the function $\sum_{n\geq 2} (n\log n)^{-s}$ around the singularity at $s=1$; this requires the asymptotics of the incomplete gamma function. The manipulations involve polylogs for which we find a representation in terms of Nielsen integrals, as well as mysterious conjectures for Bernoulli numbers. Applications include the determination of the asymptotic growth of the Taylor coefficients of $(-z/\log(1-z))^k$. We also give the asymptotics of Stirling numbers of first kind and their formula in terms of harmonic numbers.
A Hybrid of Darboux's Method and Singularity Analysis in Combinatorial Asymptotics
Published • View Publication • BIB
A ``hybrid method'', dedicated to asymptotic coefficient extraction in combinatorial generating functions, is presented, which combines Darboux's method and singularity analysis theory. This hybrid method applies to functions that remain of moderate growth near the unit circle and satisfy suitable smoothness assumptions--this, even in the case when the unit circle is a natural boundary. A prime application is to coefficients of several types of infinite product generating functions, for which full asymptotic expansions (involving periodic fluctuations at higher orders) can be derived. Examples relative to permutations, trees, and polynomials over finite fields are treated in this way.
Random Matrices, Graphical Enumeration and the Continuum Limit of Toda Lattices

In this paper we derive a hierarchy of differential equations which uniquely determine the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion, for large $N$, of the logarithm of the partition function of $N \times N$ Hermitian random matrices. These coefficients are generating functions for graphical enumeration on Riemann surfaces. The case that we particularly consider is for an underlying measure that differs from the Gaussian weight by a single monomial term of degree $2ν$. The coupling parameter for this term plays the role of the independent dynamical variable in the differential equations. From these equations one may deduce functional analytic characterizations of the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion. Moreover, this ode system can be solved recursively to explicitly construct these coefficients as functions of the coupling parameter. This analysis of the fine structure of the asymptotic coefficients can be extended to multiple coupling parameters and we present a limited illustration of this for the case of two parameters.

Alternating permutations and symmetric functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use the theory of symmetric functions to enumerate various classes of alternating permutations w of {1,2,...,n}. These classes include the following: (1) both w and w^{-1} are alternating, (2) w has certain special shapes, such as (m-1,m-2,...,1), under the RSK algorithm, (3) w has a specified cycle type, and (4) w has a specified number of fixed points. We also enumerate alternating permutations of a multiset. Most of our formulas are umbral expressions where after expanding the expression in powers of a variable E, E^k is interpreted as the Euler number E_k. As a small corollary, we obtain a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients of an asymptotic expansion appearing in Ramanujan's Lost Notebook.

Twenty combinatorial examples of asymptotics derived from multivariate generating functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\{a_\rr : \rr \in (\Z^+)^d \}$ be a $d$-dimensional array of numbers, for which the generating function $F(\zz) := \sum_\rr a_\rr \zz^\rr$ is meromorphic in a neighborhood of the origin. For example, $F$ may be a rational multivariate generating function. We discuss recent results that allow the effective computation of asymptotic expansions for the coefficients of $F$. Our purpose is to illustrate the use of these techniques on a variety of problems of combinatorial interest. The survey begins by summarizing previous work on the asymptotics of univariate and multivariate generating functions. Next we describe the Morse-theoretic underpinnings of some new asymptotic techniques. We then quote and summarize these results in such a way that only elementary analyses are needed to check hypotheses and carry out computations. The remainder of the survey focuses on combinatorial applications, such as enumeration of words with forbidden substrings, edges and cycles in graphs, polyominoes, and descents in permutations. After the individual examples, we discuss three broad classes of examples, namely functions derived via the transfer matrix method, those derived via the kernel method, and those derived via the method of Lagrange inversion. These methods have the property that generating functions derived from them are amenable to our asymptotic analyses, and we describe further machinery that facilitates computations for these classes of examples.

Watermelon configurations with wall interaction: exact and asymptotic results
Published in J. Physics Conf. Series 42 (2006), 179--212. • View Publication • BIB
We perform an exact and asymptotic analysis of the model of $n$ vicious walkers interacting with a wall via contact potentials, a model introduced by Brak, Essam and Owczarek. More specifically, we study the partition function of watermelon configurations which start on the wall, but may end at arbitrary height, and their mean number of contacts with the wall. We improve and extend the earlier (partially non-rigorous) results by Brak, Essam and Owczarek, providing new exact results, and more precise and more general asymptotic results, in particular full asymptotic expansions for the partition function and the mean number of contacts. Furthermore, we relate this circle of problems to earlier results in the combinatorial and statistical literature.

On q-functional equations and excursion moments
Published in Discrete Mathematics 309 (2009) 207-230 • View Publication • BIB
We analyse q-functional equations arising from tree-like combinatorial structures, which are counted by size, internal path length, and certain generalisations thereof. The corresponding counting parameters are labelled by a positive integer k. We show the existence of a joint limit distribution for these parameters in the limit of infinite size, if the size generating function has a square root as dominant singularity. The limit distribution coincides with that of integrals of k-th powers of the standard Brownian excursion. Our approach yields a recursion for the moments of the limit distribution. It can be used to analyse asymptotic expansions of the moments, and it admits an extension to other types of singularity.

Asymptotics of multivariate sequences, II: multiple points of the singular variety
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a multivariate generating function F(z), whose coefficients are indexed by d-tuples of nonnegative integers: F(z) = sum_r a_r z^r where z^r denotes the product of z_j^{r_j} over j = 1, ..., d. Suppose that F(z) is meromorphic in some neighborhood of the origin in complex d-space. Let V be the set where the denominator of F vanishes. Effective asymptotic expansions for the coefficients can be obtained by complex contour integration near points of V. In the first article in this series, we treated the case of smooth points of V. In this article we deal with multiple points of V. Our results show that the central limit (Ornstein-Zernike) behavior typical of the smooth case does not hold in the multiple point case. For example, when V has a multiple point singularity at the point (1, ..., 1), rather than a_r decaying on the order of |r|^{-1/2} as |r| goes to infinity, a_r is a polynomial plus a rapidly decaying term.

Asymptotic expansions in $n^{-1}$ for percolation critical values on the $n$-cube and $\mathbb{Z}^n$
We use the lace expansion to prove that the critical values for nearest-neighbour bond percolation on the $n$-cube $\{0,1\}^n$ and on $\mathbb{Z}^n$ have asymptotic expansions, with rational coefficients, to all orders in powers of $n^{-1}$.

Additive functionals on random search trees
Search trees are fundamental data structures in computer science. We study functionals on random search trees that satisfy recurrence relations of a simple additive form. Many important functionals including the space requirement, internal path length, and the so-called shape functional fall under this framework. Our goal is to derive asymptotics of moments and identify limiting distributions of these functionals under two commonly studied probability models -- the random permutation model and the uniform model. For the random permutation model, our approach is based on establishing transfer theorems that link the order of growth of the input into a particular deterministic recurrence to the order of growth of the output. For the uniform model, our approach is based on the complex-analytic tool of singularity analysis. To facilitate a systematic analysis of these additive functionals we extend singularity analysis, a class of methods by which one can translate on a term-by-term basis an asymptotic expansion of a functional around its dominant singularity into a corresponding expansion for the Taylor coefficients of the function. The most important extension is the determination of how singularities are composed under the operation of Hadamard product of analytic power series. The transfer theorems derived are used in conjunction with the method of moments to establish limit laws for m-ary search trees under the random permutation model. For the uniform model on binary search trees, the extended singularity analysis toolkit is employed to establish the asymptotic behavior of the moments of a wide class of functionals. These asymptotics are used, again in conjunction with the method of moments, to derive limit laws.

Free probability and representations of large symmetric groups
We study the asymptotic behavior of the free cumulants (in the sense of free probability theory of Voiculescu) of Jucys--Murphy elements--or equivalently--of the transition measure associated with a Young diagram. We express these cumulants in terms of normalized characters of the appropriate representation of the symmetric group S_q. Our analysis considers the case when the Young diagrams rescaled by q^{-1/2} converge towards some prescribed shape. We find explicitly the second order asymptotic expansion and outline the algorithm which allows to find the asymptotic expansion of any order. As a corollary we obtain the second order asymptotic expansion of characters evaluated on cycles in terms of free cumulants, i.e. we find explicitly terms in Kerov polynomials with the appropriate degree.

The enumeration of simple permutations
A simple permutation is one which maps no proper non-singleton interval onto an interval. We consider the enumeration of simple permutations from several aspects. Our results include a straightforward relationship between the ordinary generating function for simple permutations and that for all permutations, that the coefficients of this series are not P-recursive, an asymptotic expansion for these coefficients, and a number of congruence results.
