Some convolution identities and an inverse relation involving partial Bell polynomials
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 19 (2012), no. 4, Paper 34, 14 pp • View Publication • BIB
We prove an inverse relation and a family of convolution formulas involving partial Bell polynomials. Known and some presumably new combinatorial identities of convolution type are discussed. Our approach relies on an interesting multinomial formula for the binomial coefficients. The inverse relation is deduced from a parametrization of suitable identities that facilitate dealing with compositions of Bell polynomials.

Complete Padovan sequences in finite fields
Published in Fibonacci Quart. 45 (2007), no. 1, 64-75 • View Publication • BIB
Given a prime $p\ge 5$, and given $1<κ<p-1$, we call a sequence $(a_n)_{n}$ in $\mathbb{F}_p$ a $Φ_κ$-sequence if it is periodic with period $p-1$, and if it satisfies the linear recurrence $a_n+a_{n+1}=a_{n+κ}$ with $a_0=1$. Such a sequence is said to be a complete $Φ_κ$-sequence if in addition $\{a_0,a_1,...,a_{p-2}\}=\{1,...,p-1\}$. For instance, every primitive root $b$ mod $p$ generates a complete $Φ_κ$-sequence $a_n=b^n$ for some (unique) $κ$. A natural question is whether every complete $Φ_κ$-sequence is necessarily defined by a primitive root. For $κ=2$ the answer is known to be positive. In this paper we reexamine that case and investigate the case $κ=3$ together with the associated cases $κ=p-2$ and $κ=p-3$.

Arithmetic partition sums and orbits of Z_n^k under the symmetric group S_k
We study M(n,k,r), the number of orbits of {(a_1,...,a_k)\in Z_n^k | a_1+...+a_k = r (mod n)} under the action of S_k. Equivalently, M(n,k,r) sums the partition numbers of an arithmetic sequence: M(n,k,r) = sum_{t \geq 0} p(n-1,k,r+nt), where p(a,b,t) denotes the number of partitions of t into at most b parts, each of which is at most a. We derive closed formulas and various identities for such arithmetic partition sums. These results have already appeared in Elashvili/Jibladze/Pataraia, Combinatorics of necklaces and "Hermite reciprocity", J. Alg. Combin. 10 (1999) 173-188, and the main result was also published by Von Sterneck in Sitzber. Akad. Wiss. Wien. Math. Naturw. Class. 111 (1902), 1567-1601 (see Lemma 2 and references in math.NT/9909121). Thanks to Don Zagier and Robin Chapman for bringing these references to our attention.
