On the $k$-linkage problem for generalizations of semicomplete digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A directed graph (digraph) $ D $ is $ k $-linked if $ |D| \geq 2k $, and for any $ 2k $ distinct vertices $ x_1, \ldots, x_k, y_1, \ldots, y_k $ of $ D $, there exist vertex-disjoint paths $ P_1, \ldots, P_k $ such that $ P_i $ is a path from $ x_i $ to $ y_i $ for each $ i \in [k] $. In 1980, Thomassen conjectured that there exists a function $ f(k) $ such that every $ f(k) $-strong digraph is $ k $-linked. He later disproved this conjecture by showing that $ f(2) $ does not exist for general digraphs and proved that the function $f(k)$ exists for the class of tournaments. In this paper we consider a large class $\mathcal{ D} $ of digraphs which includes all semicomplete digraphs (digraphs with no pair of non-adjacent vertices) and all quasi-transitive digraphs (a digraph $D$ is quasi-transitive if for any three vertices $x, y, z$ of $D$, whenever $xy$ and $yz$ are arcs, then $x$ and $z$ are adjacent). We prove that every $ 3k $-strong digraph $D\in \mathcal{D}$ with minimum out-degree at least $ 23k $ is $ k $-linked. A digraph $D$ is $l$-quasi-transitive if whenever there is a path of length $l$ between vertices $u$ and $v$ in $D$ the vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent. Hence 2-quasi-transitive digraphs are exactly the quasi-transitive digraphs. We prove that there is a function $f(k,l)$ so that every $f(k,l)$-strong $l$-quasi-transitive digraph is $k$-linked. The main new tool in our proofs significantly strengthens an important property of vertices with maximum in-degree in a tournament. While Landau in 1953 already proved that such a vertex $v$ is reachable by all other vertices by paths of length at most 2, we show that, in fact, the structure of these paths is much richer. In general there are many such paths for almost all out-neighbours of $v$ and this property is crucial in our proofs.

Solutions to the linkage conjecture in tournaments
A digraph $D$ is $k$-linked if for every $2k$-tuple $ x_1,\ldots , x_k, y_1, \ldots , y_k$ of distinct vertices in $D$, there exist $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint paths $P_1,\ldots, P_k$ such that $P_i$ starts at $x_i$ and ends at $y_i$, $i\in [k]$. In 2015, Pokrovskiy conjectured that there exists a function $g(k)$ such that every $2k$-connected tournament with minimum in-degree and minimum out-degree at least $g(k)$ is $k$-linked in [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B 115 (2015) 339--347]. In this paper, we disprove this conjecture by constructing a family of counterexamples. The counterexamples also provide a negative answer to the question raised by Girão, Popielarz, Snyder in [Combinatorica 41 (2021) 815--837]. Further, we prove that every $(2k+1)$-connected semicomplete digraph $D$ with minimum out-degree at least $ 10^7k^{4}$ is $k$-linked, which refines and generalizes the early result of Girão, Popielarz, Snyder.

Spanning $H$-subdivisions and perfect $H$-subdivision tilings in dense digraphs

Given a digraph $H$, we say a digraph $H^\prime$ is an $H$-subdivision if $H^\prime$ is obtained from $H$ by replacing one or more arcs from $H$ with internally vertex-disjoint path(s). In this paper, we prove that for any digraph $H$ with $h$ arcs and no isolated vertices, there is a constant $C_0>0$ such that the following hold. $(1)$ For any integer $C\geq C_0$ and every digraph $D$ on $n\geq Ch$ vertices, if the minimum in- and out-degree of $D$ is at least $n/2$, then it contains an $H$-subdivision covering all vertices of $D$. $(2)$ For any integer partition $n=n_1+\cdots+n_m$ such that the sum of the $n_i$ less than $αn$ is no more than $βn$, if a digraph $D$ has the order $n\geq Cm$ and the minimum in- and out-degree at least $\sum_{i=1}^m\lceil\frac{n_i}{2}\rceil$, then it contains $m$ disjoint $H$-subdivisions, where the order of these $H$-subdivisions is $n_1, \ldots, n_m$, respectively. The result of $(1)$ settles the conjecture raised by Pavez-Signé \cite{Pavez} in a stronger form, and ameliorate the result of Lee \cite{Lee}. Also, the conclusion of $(2)$ partly answers of the conjecture of Lee \cite{Lee1} and generalizes the recent work of Lee \cite{Lee1}.

A generalization of the Hamiltonian cycle in dense digraphs

Let D be a digraph and C be a cycle in D. For any two vertices x and y in D, the distance from x to y is the minimum length of a path from x to y. We denote the square of Let $D$ be a digraph and $C$ be a cycle in $D$. For any two vertices $x$ and $y$ in $D$, the distance from $x$ to $y$ is the minimum length of a path from $x$ to $y$. We denote the square of the cycle $C$ to be the graph whose vertex set is $V(C)$ and for distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ in $C$, there is an arc from $x$ to $y$ if and only if the distance from $x$ to $y$ in $C$ is at most $2$. The reverse square of the cycle $C$ is the digraph with the same vertex set as $C$, and the arc set $A(C)\cup \{yx: \mbox{the vertices}\ x, y\in V(C)\ \mbox{and the distance from $x$ to $y$ on $C$ is $2$}\}$. In this paper, we show that for any real number $γ>0$ there exists a constant $n_0=n_0(γ)$, such that every digraph on $n\geq n_0$ vertices with the minimum in- and out-degree at least $(2/3+γ)n$ contains the reverse square of a Hamiltonian cycle. Our result extends a result of Czygrinow, Kierstead and Molla.

Semi-Degree Condition for Arbitrary $H$-Linked Oriented Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $ H $ be a multi-digraph on $ h $ vertices with $ q $ arcs. An \textbf{$H$-subdivision} in a digraph $D$ is a subdigraph obtained by replacing every arc $uv$ of $H$ with a path from $u$ to $v$ in $D$ such that these paths are pairwise internally vertex-disjoint. A digraph $ D $ is \textbf{arbitrary $ H $-linked} if, for every injection $ f: V(H) \to V(D) $, there exists an $ H $-subdivision in $ D $ such that each vertex $ v \in V(H) $ is mapped to $ f(v) \in V(D) $, and the length of every subdivision path can be arbitrarily specified as {an integer \(l \geq 4\)}. An oriented graph is a digraph without 2-cycles. Keevash, Kühn, and Osthus proved that every sufficiently large oriented graph $ D $ of order $ n $ with $δ^0(D) \geq \frac{3n-4}{8}$ contains a Hamilton cycle (i.e., a $\overset{\leftrightarrow}{K_2}$-subdivision). Subsequently, Kelly, Kühn, and Osthus showed that such oriented graphs {are also arbitrary $ H $-linked, where $H$ is a loop}. Motivated by these results, we establish a minimum semi-degree condition for arbitrary $ H $-linked oriented graphs: there exists $ n_0 = n_0(h,q) $ such that every oriented graph $ D $ of order $ n \geq n_0 $ with $δ^0(D) \geq \frac{3n + 3h + 3q - 5}{8}$ is arbitrary $ H $-linked; specifically, if $H$ is a loop, this holds under the weaker condition $δ^0(D) \geq \frac{3n - 4}{8}$. The result provides an oriented graph analogue of Wang's conjecture on cycle-factors in graphs [J. Korean Math. Soc. 51 (2014) 919--940] and determines the tight semi-degree bounds for both strongly Hamiltonian-connected and arbitrary $q$-linked oriented graphs.

Bipartitions with prescribed order of highly connected digraphs
A digraph is strongly connected if it has a directed path from $x$ to $y$ for every ordered pair of distinct vertices $x, y$ and it is strongly $k$-connected if it has at least $k+1$ vertices and remains strongly connected when we delete any set of at most $k-1$ vertices. For a digraph $D$, we use $δ(D)$ to denote $\mathop{\text{min}}\limits_{v\in V (D)} {|N_D^+(v)\cup N_D^-(v)|}$. In this paper, we show the following result. Let $k, l, n, n_1, n_2 \in \mathbb{N}$ with $n_1+n_2\leq n$ and $n_1,n_2\geq n/20$. Suppose that $D$ is a strongly $10^7k(k+l)^2\log(2kl$)-connected digraph of order $n$ with $δ(D)\geq n-l$. Then there exist two disjoint subsets $V_1, V_2\in V(D)$ with $|V_1| = n_1$ and $|V_2| = n_2$ such that each of $D[V_1]$, $D[V_2]$, and $D[V_1, V_2]$ is strongly $k$-connected. In particular, $V_1$ and $V_2$ form a partition of $V(D)$ when $n_1+n_2=n$. This result improves the earlier result of Kim, Kühn, and Osthus [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 30 (2016) 895--911].

Removal paths avoiding vertices
In this paper, we show that for any positive integer $m$ and $k\in [2]$, let $G$ be a $(2m+2k+2)$-connected graph and let $a_1,\ldots , a_m, s, t$ be any distinct vertices of $G$, there are $k$ internally disjoint $s$-$t$ paths $P_1, \ldots, P_k$ in $G$ such that $\{a_1,\ldots , a_m\} \cap \bigcup^{k}_{i=1}V (P_i) = \emptyset$ and $G- \bigcup^{k}_{i=1}V (P_i)$ is 2-connected, which generalizes the result by Chen, Gould and Yu [Combinatorica 23 (2003) 185--203], and Kriesell [J. Graph Theory 36 (2001) 52--58]. The case $k=1$ implies that for any $(2m+5)$-connected graph $G$, any edge $e \in E(G)$, and any distinct vertices $a_1,\ldots , a_m$ of $G-V(e)$, there exists a cycle $C$ in $G- \{a_1,\ldots , a_m\}$ such that $e\in E(C)$ and $G- V(C)$ is 2-connected, which improves the bound $10m+11$ of Y. Hong, L. Kang and X. Yu in [J. Graph Theory 80 (2015) 253--267].

Cycle-factors in oriented graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ be a positive integer. A $k$-cycle-factor of an oriented graph is a set of disjoint cycles of length $k$ that covers all vertices of the graph. In this paper, we prove that there exists a positive constant $c$ such that for $n$ sufficiently large, any oriented graph on $n$ vertices with both minimum out-degree and minimum in-degree at least $(1/2-c)n$ contains a $k$-cycle-factor for any $k\geq4$. Additionally, under the same hypotheses, we also show that for any sequence $n_1, \ldots, n_t$ with $\sum^t_{i=1}n_i=n$ and the number of the $n_i$ equal to $3$ is $αn$, where $α$ is any real number with $0<α<1/3$, the oriented graph contains $t$ disjoint cycles of lengths $n_1, \ldots, n_t$. This conclusion is the best possible in some sense and refines a result of Keevash and Sudakov.

The generalizations of Hamiltonian in oriented graphs
An oriented graph is an orientation of a simple graph. In 2009, Keevash, Kühn and Osthus proved that every sufficiently large oriented graph $D$ of order $n$ with $(3n-4)/8$ is Hamiltonian. Later, Kelly, Kühn and Osthus showed that it is also pancyclic. Inspired by this, we show that for any given constant $t$ and positive integer partition $n = n_1 + \cdots + n_t$, if $D$ is an oriented graph on $n$ vertices with minimum semidegree at least $(3n-4)/8$, then it contains $t$ disjoint cycles of lengths $n_1,\ldots , n_t$. Also, we determine the bounds on the semidegree of sufficiently large oriented graphs that are strongly Hamiltonian-connected, $k$-ordered Hamiltonian and spanning $k$-linked.

A Dirac-type theorem for arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$-linked digraphs
Given any digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices, let $\mathcal{P}(D)$ be the family of all directed paths in $D$, and let $H$ be a digraph with the arc set $A(H)=\{a_1, \ldots, a_k\}$. The digraph $D$ is called arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$-linked if for any injective map $f: V(H)\rightarrow V(D)$ and any integer set $\mathcal{N}=\{n_1, \ldots, n_k\}$ satisfying that $n_i\geq4$ for each $i\in\{1, \ldots, k\}$, there is a map $g: A(H)\rightarrow \mathcal{P}(D)$ such that for every arc $a_i=uv$, $g(a_i)$ is a directed path from $f(u)$ to $f(v)$ of length $n_i$, and different arcs are mapped into internally vertex-disjoint directed paths in $D$, and $\bigcup_{i\in[k]}V(g(a_i))=V(D)$. Here, the length of a directed path is defined as the number of its arcs. In this paper, we prove that for any digraph $H$ with $k$ arcs and $δ(H)\geq1$, there exists a constant $C_0=C_0(k)$ such that if $D$ is a digraph of order $n\geq C_0$ and minimum in- and out-degree at least $n/2+k$, then it is arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$-linked. The lower bound on the minimum in- and out-degree is best possible. We further prove a more general form that allows $k$ to be linear in $n$, while imposing some restrictions on the lengths of the subdivided arcs. As corollaries, we solved a conjecture of Wang \cite{Wang} for sufficiently large graphs, and partly answered a problem raised by Pavez-Signé \cite{Pavez}.

A characterization of rich c-partite (c > 7) tournaments without (c + 2)-cycles
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 25:2, Graph Theory (December 5, 2023) dmtcs:9732 • View Publication • BIB
Let c be an integer. A c-partite tournament is an orientation of a complete c-partite graph. A c-partite tournament is rich if it is strong, and each partite set has at least two vertices. In 1996, Guo and Volkmann characterized the structure of all rich c-partite tournaments without (c + 1)-cycles, which solved a problem by Bondy. They also put forward a problem that what the structure of rich c-partite tournaments without (c + k)-cycles for some k>1 is. In this paper, we answer the question of Guo and Volkmann for k = 2.

Disjoint cycles covering specified vertices in bipartite graphs with partial degrees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ be a positive integer. Let $G$ be a balanced bipartite graph of order $2n$ with bipartition $(X, Y)$, and $S$ a subset of $X$. Suppose that every pair of nonadjacent vertices $(x,y)$ with $x\in S, y\in Y$ satisfies $d(x)+d(y)\geq n+1$. We show that if $|S|\geq 2k+2$, then $G$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles covering $S$ such that each of the $k$ cycles contains at least two vertices of $S$. Here, both the degree condition and the lower bound of $|S|$ are best possible. And we also show that if $|S|=2k+1$, then $G$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles such that each of the $k$ cycles contains at least two vertices of $S$.

Packing a number of copies of a $(p,\,q)$-graph
Let $k,p,q$ be three positive integers. A graph $G$ with order $n$ is said to be $k$-placeable if there are $k$ edge disjoint copies of $G$ in the complete graph on $n$ vertices. A $(p,\,q)$-graph is a graph of order $p$ with $q$ edges. Packing results have proved useful in the study of the complexity of graph properties. Bollobás et al. investigated the $k$-placeable of $(n,\,n-2)$-graphs and $(n,\,n-1)$-graphs with $k=2$ and $k=3$. Motivated by their results, this paper characterizes $(n,\,n-1)$-graphs with girth at least $9$ which are $4$-placeable. We also consider the $k$-placeable of $(n,\,n+1)$-graphs and 2-factors.

On directed version of the Sauer-Spender Theorem
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a digraph of order $n$ and let $W$ be any subset of $V$. We define the minimum semi-degree of $W$ in $D$ to be $δ^0(W)=\mbox{min}\{δ^+(W),δ^-(W)\}$, where $δ^+(W)$ is the minimum out-degree of $W$ in $D$ and $δ^-(W)$ is the minimum in-degree of $W$ in $D$. Let $k$ be an integer with $k\geq 1$. In this paper, we prove that for any positive integer partition $|W|=\sum_{i=1}^{k}n_i$ with $n_i\geq 2$ for each $i$, if $δ^0(W)\geq \frac{3n-3}{4}$, then there are $k$ vertex disjoint cycles $C_1,\ldots,C_k$ in $D$ such that each $C_i$ contains exactly $n_i$ vertices of $W$. Moreover, the lower bound of $δ^0(W)$ can be improved to $\frac{n}{2}$ if $k=1$, and $\frac{n}{2}+|W|-1$ if $n\geq 2|W|$. The minimum semi-degree condition $δ^0(W)\geq \frac{3n-3}{4}$ is sharp in some sense and this result partially confirms the conjecture posed by Wang [Graphs and Combinatorics 16 (2000) 453-462]. It is also a directed version of the Sauer-Spender Theorem on vertex disjoint cycles in graphs [J. Combin. Theory B, 25 (1978) 295-302].

Partitioning a graph into cycles with a specified number of chords

For a graph $G$, let $σ_{2}(G)$ be the minimum degree sum of two non-adjacent vertices in $G$. A chord of a cycle in a graph $G$ is an edge of $G$ joining two non-consecutive vertices of the cycle. In this paper, we prove the following result, which is an extension of a result of Brandt et al. (J. Graph Theory 24 (1997) 165-173) for large graphs: For positive integers $k$ and $c$, there exists an integer $f(k,c)$ such that, if $G$ is a graph of order $n \ge f(k, c)$ and $σ_{2}(G) \ge n$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles, each of which has at least $c$ chords.

Lichiardopol's conjecture on disjoint cycles in tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2010, N. Lichiardopol conjectured for $q \geq 3$ and $k \geq 1$ that any tournament with minimum out-degree at least $(q-1)k-1$ contains $k$ disjoint cycles of length $q$. We prove this conjecture for $q \geq 5$. Since it is already known to hold for $q\le4$, this completes the proof of the conjecture.

Degree conditions for the partition of a graph into triangles and quadrilaterals
